Budapest

Budapest Holidays & Hotels

Hotels in Budapest

From popular cheaper chains to boutique hotels, your stay in Hungary’s capital of Budapest can be as luxurious or budget-friendly as you like. This artistic city has a range of accommodation options for solo travellers, friends, families and couples, making it a holiday destination to suit all.

Split in half by the winding River Danube, Budapest is a vibrant city that’s made up of stunning architecture, geothermal springs and unmissable view spots. Whether you visit for the Christmas markets or at the height of summer, Budapest a destination that will delight visitors of all ages and all tastes.

Where to stay

District V

If you’re looking to be in the middle of all the sights during your holiday, District V is the place to be. As the tourist centre of Budapest, District V is home to several large hotels as well as dozens of delicious restaurants, bars and shops. You’ll have the iconic Hungarian Parliament building on your doorstep, as well as Liberty Square and endless museums. District V also has a buzzing nightlife, and handily leaves you just a short walk away from all the sights across the river and further out of the city.

District VII

District VII is well known for being the city’s lively and artistic hub. As Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, it’s also rich with history - you can’t miss the Dohány Street Synagogue, built in the mid-19th century and now officially Europe’s largest synagogue. Hotels in this district will leave you perfectly situated for exploring the thermal spas, museums and shopping centres - and you’ll also be slap bang in the middle of all the city’s ruin bars.

District I

Located on the left hand side of the River Danube, a holiday in District I offers a quieter stay in Budapest. This is where you’ll find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Castle District, which contains both the Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion. It’s also home to a number of lesser-known thermal baths including Rudas Baths and Gellert Thermal Bath just a short walk away from most hotels in the area.

What to see

Budapest is a city that’s rich with history and cultural hotspots, so you’ll never be short of things to see and do during your holiday. After a wander along the River to see the striking Hungarian Parliament building and the moving Shoes on the River Danube Bank memorial, you’ll be in the heart of the city. Take a tour of the Hungarian State Opera, and soak up the free views of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, one of the most famous sights in Budapest.

Whatever the weather, no trip to Budapest is complete a trip to one of the many thermal baths. Széchenyi Thermal Bath to the north of the city centre is the most well-known. It’s home to 21 indoor and outdoor pools ranging in temperatures from 18°C to 40°C, with room to take in a few laps or just to simply enjoy a soak. Fisherman's Bastion, over the other side of the River, is another unmissable spot. The panoramic viewing terrace has fairy tale turrets and archways, and offers the best views across Budapest.

Nightlife

Budapest has a lot to offer in the way of lively nightlife; millions flock to the city every year for a holiday to enjoy the inexpensive, eclectic after-dark entertainment. The ruin bars, so called for their locations in dilapidated buildings, are dotted around the city and are a must visit. Szimpla Kert is one of the most famous ruin bars, featuring a warren of little rooms filled with mismatched furniture, live music and eclectic art. There’s also plenty of other nightlife to keep you busy, too, from casinos to bars, nightclubs and even parties in the thermal spas!

What to eat

From hearty meals to sweet treats, Budapest has its fair share of delicious food for you to sink your teeth into. As the national dish of Hungary, goulash is probably one of the most popular meals around. It’s usually made with beef and vegetables, and is seasoned with a touch of paprika for a warming kick. For dessert, try a dobos torte - a delicious sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with caramel. Or, treat yourself to a Kürtoskalács, a hollow cake that resembles a chimney, and which can be personalised with everything from cinnamon to Nutella – you are on holiday after all!

Shopping

The vibrant Váci street is one of the most well-known shopping areas in Budapest, and features everything from souvenir shops to high street stores and local crafts. The stylish WestEnd City Center is another of Budapest’s shopping havens. It’s got floors of international and local shops, as well as plenty of food stalls to keep your energy levels up.

8/10 Great

Central, clean and friendly

The Astoria gets a 5 for such a central location and the same for a lovely breakfast in elegant surroundings. The rooms were very good - clean and comfortable however the fact that a double room was simply two single beds pushed together took something away from the stay and only gets a 4. Unfortunately it was quite noisy as the bins seemed to get emptied each morning at about 4 o'clock - ok, nothing the Hotel could really do about that but it meant for a disturbed night - 3 out of 5. Finally, yes I would happily stay there again and recommend this Hotel to friends.

Astoria review

Having read all the reviews before we booked we were not a bit disappointed. We asked for (and got) rooms that didn't face the front and had two adjacent rooms that were very comfortable indeed, with chairs to relax in as well as chairs at the desks. The breakfast was great, plenty of choice of hot and cold food and endless juice, tea and coffee. We also ate in the hotel a couple of evenings and thoroughly enjoyed well cooked, beautifully presented dishes. The menus at 4000 frts were particularly good value. Its location is excellent, right by the metro and a brisk 5 minute walk to the Danube. The staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant and we all agreed we would definitely stay again.

Excellent location next to a Metro Station and bus routes. Glorious public rooms in this historic hotel. Our room, although large and clean was a little worn but at the rate of approx £40 a night for a double room including breakfast, it was great value. There was plenty of choice for the buffet breakfast. The dining room was never crowded and the staff efficient. I would recommend this hotel it was great value for money in a capital city. We picked up a Zona taxi at the airport and booked on the net to be taken back at the end of our visit. Quick and good service. They charge a set rate so you have no fear of being cheated.

Astoria

Handy location, right on metro, although we ended up walking everywhere quite easily. We had a room on the side street so not too noisy. Our room was one of the smaller unrefurbished type and pretty worn out, defintiely not 4star but served purpose and was clean. As in many places the 'double' was two beds pushed together (also the plastic backed mattress cover was uncomfortable). After the first night we asked if they had rooms with a proper double bed and was told not on the rate we paid but only in better grade rooms which are 30euro extra. Good variety at breakfast - inlcuding chocolate cake! The man on reception was more efficient than welcoming. Characterful reception and dining areas. All in all, ok if you get a good rate but don't expect 4 star if you get an unrefurbished room. Also if you want a taxi back to the airport, ask them to phone Zona taxis (get a card on the way from the airport to hotel) as they are cheaper than the rate advertised of the firm used by the hotel.

Hotel was very nice, rooms had been refurbished recently and quality of fittings was good. Breakfast buufet style and excellent, wide selection and good quality. Hotel staff were very friendly and organised. Would definatly go back.

Only complaint was no tea making facilities in room. Just a personal one, I like my tea in the morning.

Review of 'ASTORIA'

The Astoria was pretty much as expected from the reviews I had read. The renovated part of the hotel is very impressive, but our rooms were in the un-renovated section. The rooms were a little tired looking to say the least, although reasonably large and importantly, they were clean. Make sure you ask for rooms that do not face the street as the bin men are very noisy at 5 am every morning! Breakfast was OK with a decent range on offer. All in all, the location made up for everything, but don't be fooled by the star rating, this is no 4 star hotel.

Review of 'ASTORIA'

This was a nice hotel. Not AMAZING! but nice. It had everything you could need, from good rooms, nice bathrooms, a cafe and a restaurant(which is expensive and mainly consists of goose liver and caviar!) But that was about it. The staff are reluctant to speak English! But this happens in most of Budapest.
Its location is probably it's best quality. Smack bang in the middle of Budapest, meaning you can get to everything, anywhere!
You can purchase a Budapest Card from the reception. These are about £20 each and last for 3 days, (you can also buy 2 day passes, im assuming this is about £15. These cards give you free travel on all forms of transport, and discounts into a large number of attractions and restaurants. I would definatly recommend you buy one, whether you're at the Astoria or not! The Zoo is a must see, and is free with your Budapest card.
If you're looking for a well priced, nice, centrally located hotel, then the Astoria is perfect.
