Waste of Money

On arrival we were greeted fine not usual welcoming expected from a hotel. I had a surprise as I was told I had to give my bank card over for €75 to be pre-authorised for the stay as I had paid upfront for the room to alpharooms. I was not aware of this and first time I have ever heard of this, money coming out of your account twice. I had requested a twin room but received a double so had to go back down to change. Swapped to smallest twin room ever and that is coming from 2 people under 5ft! . Rooms very dated. The whole hotel needs updating, comes across as being grotty and seedy. Okay if you are paying nothing but I have stayed in nicer hostels. The room was very cold and the balcony doors were not locked. Windows on balcony door very thin and anyone could have stepped over balcony into your room. Bed right up against doors so you could feel the cold. We were room only so glad I didn't have breakfast. Would never stay again. Only plus is location if you are going for Shopping - if not stay in Jurys on Broad Street or the IBIS.

Good location

Clean room. Good breakfast. On arrival we were greated ok. I had a surprise as I was told I had to give my bank card over for £50 to be pre authorised for the stay as I had paid upfront for the room. I was not aware of this and therefore short of what invaded budgeted for, for my weekend. I had requested a twin room but received a double. There was a strange smell in the long twisty corridors, but found our room ok. The room was nice and comfy. It was quiet considering the central location. The room was very cold and the balcony doors were very thin and not secure in closing. They didn't close together with a good gap between which made the room very cold. I was unable to find a thermostat so we had an extra blanket over the 2 nights. Breakfast was buffet style and good choice, and cooked well.

basic city cener hotel

value for money, we had 3 bedded room and wardrobe small than friends in twin room, bathroom quite small. evening buffet ok but nothing special breakfast was better but you get coffee and tea out of large flask and tea very stewed. did complain as was told we could have pots of hot water and teabags which was much better. one light out that was seen too within 15mins of reporting it. handy for shopping center and main train station.walls very thin as next room came in at 3am and could hear them chatting for next couple of hours

Perfect location for a City break

Whilst we felt that the hotel was in need of some tender loving care, we had a good stay and would return. Room & Beds were clean, but decor needed some attention. If there was a downside, it was that the front bedrooms (overlooking New Street) were noisy late at night, and again very early in the morning with shop deliveries etc. We visited the German Market & attended a concert at the LG Arena during our stay, and with the train station right opposite the hotel, this was very convienient.

Excellent value for money

great city centre location, friendly staff. The room was clean and well presented, comfortable bed. There wasnt any noise from slamming doors etc so the rooms were quite well sound proofed. All in all a good nights sleep!

Value for money

The Britannia hotel is cheap and cheerful, clean and has the necessary facilities. Situated in the centre of Birmingham, it's convenient for New Street Station and City Centre attractions - all within walking distance.

pleasant, cheap & cheerful

It was splendid in its day but now very worn. However, everything was spotlessly clean and the breakfast choice was great and with friendly helpful staff it was a good stay. Surprisingly peaceful in the room despite it being a Friday night in the city centre. Only negative side is that we booked a disabled access room and there wasn't one available. We got a big room instead but getting in & out of the room in a small walled in corner was tricky at best. Also there were swing doors to get into the hotel itself - too small for a wheelchair. There is a an alternative way through but needs an able body person to go in and get the staff first. I then went via the fire escape and down a portable ramp. Apart from the access though it was good. Birmingham in general seemed to be a very difficult place to get about with a wheelchair - much harder than Sheffield, Liverpool, Nottingham and London.

absolutely disgusting

Avoid this hotel, smelly, basic, dated and noise from other guests at all hours of the morning. Had to complain to staff at 4am about the shouting down corridors. Sentr complaint to hotel and managers response was rude and he did not care.

The best thing about my stay was...

the fact that I know I will never stay there again

Get what you pay for..

The hotel itself is in a great location 2 mins away from birmingham new street and right in the centre of all the shops and the bullring. It is around 10-15 min walk from broad street. The hotel reception are quite freindly, and the rooms are average. They are clean and tidy but if you geta double you get 2 single beds pushed together which is abit annoying. The bathroom is clean and has everything you need. The lighting in the room is not great as there is no main light just 3/4 sidelights. Breakfast was good with quite a good variety. Could do with some fruit. Overall decent hotel in great loaction.

The best thing about my stay was...

In great location to go shopping next day. Friendly service.

ask for a room with a window

stayed on floor 9. no window in room. air con unable to control below 18 therefore room far too warm. hotel was clean and breakfast good. room for storing luggage when leaving far too small and therefore has first come first served basis so if you plan on staying on later after booking out be warned you will be stuck with your luggage.

Crufts visit in March 2010

We recently stayed at the Brittannia in Birmingham New Street and found it to be a charming and well managed hotel. The staff were courteous, the breakfast was to die for, and the rooms were clean and warm. The hotel is centrally located and within easy reach of public transport, the NEC and the Airport.

Crufts visit

Hotel was perfectly adequate for my requirements, very central, ideal for the railway station, and restaurants etc., Old building, but clean, warm and comfortable with a good breakfast. Would certainly use it again.

Bank Holiday Weekend Stay

My wife, teenage daughter and myself stayed at the Britannia Hotel on New Street Birmingham for the Bank Holiday weekend, 24/25/26 May 2008. The entrance to the hotel is down a lane way, but it is easy to find. It is a small reception area and can get quite crowded easily, but adequate enough for booking in purposes. There is a lift to all the floors and we were staying on the 3rd floor where the view out the window is of a small central 'courtyard', for want of a better description. That is, all the various bedroom windows face in to this courtyard, which could actually do with a good cleaning. The bigger picture is that the Britannia is currently undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment so it is perhaps unkind to say anything bad about the hotel at this time even if one is inclined to want to do so. One thing I look for in a hotel is how the staff interact with the customers. How polite they are, how helpful they are and so on. Well let me say this, I cannot but praise the staff for their helpfulness and kindness during our stay. We had a small problem with our electric kettle the first time we wanted to make ourselves a tea/coffee. One call to reception and the problem was sorted out in under 5 minutes. Ask any member of staff for anything and they were only too willing to help. Even after the big breakfast I ate, which was gorgeous, I think they were almost willing to carry me back to my room such down to earth people they are. I had a sneak preview of the refurbishment on the 9th floor and it looks great. I could not stay long enough though until they got to my floor. Look, the bottom line is...I'll be back. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the train station, through the Pallisades shopping centre. Literally, a stones throw, as they say. As I said earlier, I could nitpick about little things in our room, or not in our room (like a safety deposit box). However, these thing are probably coming during the refurbishment, I hope. No matter what technology you use or how good the refurbishment is, if you haven't got the quality staff the Britannia has, then you ain't got the full ingredients to have a successful business. Britannia will be successful because it is on its way to having the lot. And by the way, using Alpharooms was the icing on the cake as our booking price was great and without hassle.
