Zante’s Beaches

Zakynthos, or Zante might be a name you associate with ‘party’ but there are lots of areas across the island that make Zante a great destination for all sorts of travellers looking for a summer holiday in the sun – especially it’s beaches! We take a look at some of the best beaches to visit.
Zantes party reputation comes from the areas of Laganas and Tsilivi– with it’s strips of bars and clubs, cheap drinks and parties. However, Zante has plenty of smaller areas great for families or solo travellers, such as Alykanas and Kalamaki with traditional homes, beaches and a quiet pace of life. Argassi is a little more family or couple friendly with restaurants and cafes and a couple of night spots.
Wherever you stay, if you drive a car you can get to a variety of nice, secluded beaches, or you can always walk to the more popular and lively beaches to enjoy water sports and snorkelling.

Kalamaki beach

1 hours walk from Laganas, the Kalamaki beach is soft and sandy and is the place to find nesting loggerhead turtles.
Visit one of the bars along the route to beach, or just relax on a lounger looking out to sea and grab some fruit or snacks from a beach seller when you arrive. With no bars or restaurants this is a much more secluded spot to visit, but it’s worth it to see the turtles or to relax away from the crowds of Laganas.

More active travelers  can either take a pedalo out to see the turtles, or climb up the cliff that backs the beach to see them swimming, or if you want to take a back seat then perhaps just get in a boat to explore the sea – especially if it’s a little choppy for a small pedalo.

Porto Limnionas beach

Porto Limnionas beach is 5km southwest of Ag. Leon and can be reached by hire car – across typically Greek windy roads! When you reach it you will find it is a secluded lagoon – with all the amenities of a larger beach –including  a restaurant serving drinks and Greek meals such as Octopus, Squid and big salads.

This is a pebbly beach with rocks, so wear comfy shoes and bring something to sit on! The water is the main draw to the area, where you can dive from rocks, snorkel or explore caves.

Banana Beach

If you like your water crystal clear & quite shallow, perhaps if you have young children, this is a great beach to visit. The shallow waters are chest level for around 300 metres out, making it great to wade and lounge in, and the water itself is crystal clear to observe fish in. There are on site bars, and plenty of hammocks and sunbeds.

This is a sandy beach, without a pebble in sight, and you can easily sit out of the sand or sea on the shoreline restaurants and bars and enjoy an iced cappuccino or a dinner in peace, especially out of season.

Marathonissi (Turtle Island)

To get to Marathonisi you need to take a short boat trip. This is a pebbly beach with a variety of caves to explore. You can then take a 1 or two hour tour on glass bottomed boat out which will allow you to stop off at Turtle Island to rest up, sunbathe and relax for an hour, before whisking you back again via the caves for the final hour. You can buy food on the boat, however this can be pricier than perhaps packing up a coolbox!

You can also take a pedalo out into the sea where you will see the turtles in the water, although their egg laying area isn’t open to the public, so you need to keep your eyes peeled for signs so you don’t disturb them.
