What to see and do on your Lanzarote holiday

Just a 4 hour flight from London, and with stunning year-round warm weather, a  Lanzarote holiday is a great idea for couples, singles and families. This Canary Island has diverse landscapes superb beaches and plenty of activities to enjoy. Here are just a few ‘must see’ activities….

Timanfaya National Park

You can’t go on a Lanzarote holiday without heading to its most famous attraction at least once. Take a coach (or even ride a camel) around the 51 SQ/km park to view its extraordinary rock and lava formations. Once you’ve explored the lavascape, head to the The Fire Mountains (Montañas del Fuego) in the centre of the park. (Don’t panic, the volcano hasn’t erupted since the 18th Century.) Here is another of Manrique’s creations; the El Diablo restaurant, which uses the heat from the volcano to cook its steaks!

Dive In

Thanks to its location in the nutrient rich water of the Canary current, Lanzarote is the ideal place to get your dive on and explore the underwater caves created by the island’s volcanic activity. With dive schools across the island, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’re a beginner then head to the more sheltered south coast and explore the reefs. For experienced divers, there is the chance to see dolphins, manta rays and other beautiful creatures off the northern coast, in the larger Atlantic swell. You can even explore Europe’s first underwater museum; the Museo Atlantico!

Wine Sampling

La Geria is a region famous for its wine, with vineyards growing from the fertile soil below the volcanic ash. The rich history of the area matches up perfectly with a luscious afternoon of wine tasting. Most hotels will be able to advise you of how to book a tour on arrival.  Or, for the more active, why not try the Lanzarote Wine Run? Head out in mid-June to take part in the half marathon, stopping off at wineries in La Geria along the way. (There is an optional seven mile version should you fancy having your wine at a more leisurely pace.)

Get Arty

César Manrique was a famous artist and architect born in Lanzarote, who returned to the island in the later part of his career. Hire a car and you can enjoy your own tour to see the projects he created across the Lanzarote landscape. Beginning with his home, built into a lava field and now transformed into the base for his cultural foundation, his legacy includes some beautiful gardens and lookouts, such as Cactus Garden (Jardin de Cactus) and the El Rio lookout (Mirador del Rio) in the north of the island.
