Back to the Costa Brava

24 August 2008
Two young at heart sisters-in-law in our sixties made a late booking and decided on the Costa Brava being not as expensive as other places in August. We had both been to Calella de la Costa in 1964! What a wonderful week we had in Hotel Volga. We could not really fault it. Our room was spotless and comfortable - our air conditioning was very effective. The restaurant and food first class. The hotel Volga is away from the "newer" part of the resort and we could not believe how empty the pool and beach were - we were expecting everything to be packed as we did our late booking in August. Fortunately the weather was perfect. The beaches in that area are quite wild but seem to be safe. Fun can be had with the waves which break quite heavily. The beach does shelve quite steeply but children seem to manage to keep safe. The hotel lived up to our expectations after reading reviews on this and other sites. Just a couple of remarks though (not complaints!) There were only 11 loungers around the pool - but even this seemed to be almost adequate even though the hotel was full; no water or coffee was available at dinner -all drinks had to be purchased. We had no problem with the passing trains (very convenient - we travelled to Barcelona one day 6 euros 40 return). We shall definitely return with friends to this lovely hotel.

Very Nice

07 August 2008
First time at this resort/hotel. 2 minute walk to nice beach. Nice resort, not too busy or crowded even in July. Hotel staff very friendly with maybe exception of one member of staff but all in all very nice. Would ask for room overlooking pool if we were to go again. Our room overlooked street and was very very warm in mornings; airco not powerful enough. All in all a very pleasant place to stay. Very few Brits, but that didn't bother us. Very convenient (station in front of hotel) and easy to take train (air-conditioned, great) to other resorts or to Barcelona which we did. Away from the main busier part of the resort which we also enjoyed, but easy walk if you want more nightlife.

Another wonderful holiday

26 June 2008
Having previously stayed at the hotel a few years ago we decided to go back and found it to be just as remembered. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff friendly, we enjoyed are days by the pool and could have gone to the beach club if we wanted. The food is superb and pelnty of choice for breakfast and evening buffet, served fresh and hot. It was easy to get to our hotel just flew into Barcelona caught the train which by the way is so Cheap you must try it. Changed once at Barcelona Sands station and then sat on the train till we got to our destination and the train stops about two minutes away from the hotel.

Another Enjoyable Stay

15 April 2008
Having stayed at the Volga during September 2007 we thought we would take a short Spring break in March (11th - 17th) and head back to the Volga to see what Calella was like out of season and hopefully get some early sunshine. Our arrival and check in at the hotel was easy - just as before and we were able to stay in 'our' favorite room on the top floor without any proplems. On arrival to our room we found it very clean and fresh just as before. The weather can be somewhat fickle during March and we found that there was a persistant cold wind along the coast for several days non-stop. The temperature ranged from about 16 - 23c, though mostly in the 16 - 17c's. It was pleasant enough compared with the weather at home which was struggling to top 7c. We did manage a few days relaxing on the beach, tucked in by a rock and that was great. The beaches were totally deserted and at times we felt slightly mad at getting out our towels and stripping off while all the Catalonians were dressed in the their Winter gear. This was most noticeable as we walked through the Calellean centre where all the crowds from the previous year had given way to equally deserted streets as the beaches. Most of the shops were still shuttered up from the Winter months and apart from a few bars, there was nothing open. That said, by the time we left, most was open and the crowds were starting to gather for the Easter period when, I assume, the resort kick-starts it's season. We opted again for half board - which is ideal for our needs and once again the food was excellent, though the selection of food had been reduced I suspect, due to the time of year. It really didn't matter and we would have been none the wiser had we not been there in September. As usual the staff were amazing and so very freindly. Even buying us a beer to say goodbye when we checked out the night before. The waiters and waitresses are first class and have mastered many languages. We do our best to speak and learn Catalonian out of respect, but their English is superb. Thank you once again for a wonderful stay.

Cofortable & Convenient

13 November 2007
Rooms apparently recently refurbished, spacious and well appointed for a Spanish Holiday Resort. Plenty of hot water at all times of the day. Breakfast was well above average with a well stocked buffet, and a duty chef who cooked eggs, bacon etc. to order. Lunch & Dinner both Buffet style with plenty of choice and also many items cooked to order and to one's wishes (well done, rare etc.). The pool is a bit small for the size of the hotel, but the beach is only a 2 min walk away. The location is close to the railway station ( less than 2min walk) so one does get a bit of noise from the passing trains, but no train service 2330 to 0630 approx. All staff were very friendly and reception knowledgeable about the area and local facilities. The Hotel also boasts a very good baggage room with adjacent Toilet, Shower & Changing room facilities for those departing later in the day. All in all a good stay and good value

The Volga is great, not Vulgar!

01 October 2007
What a pleasant surprise we had on discovering this gem in Calella. This was our second visit to this beautiful area and we had no idea what to expect of our hotel - only that it was close to the station. The hotel Volga was everything we wanted and so much more. Attractive, with a very smart lobby and reception area. The restaurant could not have been any cleaner and served an amazing selection of fresh food and the rooms are spacious and airy with great sea views. I would strongly recommend half board as the food served elsewhere is fine if you like Pizza, but for a fresh selection with something for everyone - you can't go wrong at the hotel. A typical 3 course meal in the town would cost around 50 euros for two people. A better meal, with more choice is 16 euros for the two or 30 euros if you only want to eat at the hotel for one night. That includes wine! The hotel has an immaculately maintained pool and the most friendly and helpful team of staff I have ever known. Always smiling and nothing is too much trouble. If you have any doubts about this hotel, then let them go. Just a note, there is a yearly festival along the promenade right outside the hotel which runs for 4 days around the 20th - 24th September. It's very loud and although it didn't really bother us, it may be worth taking some earplugs! This would be the same for all the hotels along the front in Calella at this time. Our room had air conditioning with 4 settings and the towels were changed daily. The patio doors are double glazed and the rooms had blackout curtains. I hope this has been of some help to you. Review of Volga

14 September 2007
We recently had a short break in Calella and we stayed at the Volga. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of our accommodation. There was a good selection of food for breakfast and the staff were very friendly and would bend over backwards to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We are both in our twenties and we were possibly the youngest adult guests during our stay. This was not a problem as we felt more than welcome. We would definitely stay at the Volga again.

IT'S VOLGA NOT VULGA

11 July 2007
My wife and I stayed in this fine hotel in July 2007. It is in the quieter Old Part of the Town, just one road down from the main street with its shops and bars. The hotel is located next to the main rail line and the railway station, the noise from which is not a problem. The rooms were very clean and had all the amenities of a 3* Hotel. Every night there was Bingo early evening and dancing to the DJ for the more elderly amongst us. The bar was well equipped and sold all the main brands and the food was good, buffet style. The hotel had its own part of the beach and was a short walk under the railway. If you produced your room key you got a 10% discount at the Beach Bar. I would definitely use the hotel again.

A friendly comfortable hotel. It merits more than the 3 star rating it has been awarded. Good food and very good service from staff who were most obliging. The rooms are pleasant and well furnished and the location is close to the railway station and shops. The provision of a shuttle taxi for those using the shuttle bus would enhance the experience as the walk from the drop off and pick up point for these is some way from the Volga and could be difficult for less mobile clients. This should also be highlighted in your brochure as disabled people who booked without knowing the location could experience considerable difficulty.

We stayed in November 2006 whilst travelling all over Spain. This was the best value hotel we stayed at on the entire holiday. Take the HB option as the Food is fantastic. Fresh, and with a huge variety, with lots cooked in fromnt of your eyes.
The room was clean and bright.Satellite TV, and good bathroom.
The big advantage is being near to the train, which although near is NOT intrusive. Trains to Barcellona centre run every 20 mins and cost £4 return. It has to be the best way to see the Barcellona as well as the Costa Brava.
I agree with all the other positive comments of the reviewers. This is a winner and we will return.

We have just returned from an excellent holiday at the Volga. Calella. Everything was spot on from the welcome on our late arrival. The manager is to be congratulated on his work force, everyone was pleasant and efficient and nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was very good with ample choice to suit every taste. Our room was comfortable and clean. We will certainly be returning.

I was very impressed with this hotel and because others of my party were in Hotels in Calella for a wedding I had the opportunity to compare it with others, including a four star hotel. The good points are as follows. It is situated in the older part of town which was quieter by day and night. It is very close to the railway station and it is easy to get cheap railfares to Barcelona and to other resorts along the coast. It was not full of hard-drinking young English people as were some others but was full of other nationalities of mature years who were very interesting to talk to. The meals catered for all tastes and all appetites. The bar and pool areas were far more pleasant than in some other hotels. The staff were wonderful with me when I needed help after being robbed in Barcelona and were jovial and helpful at all other times. Entertainment at night was good. The room was spotless. I would return to this hotel.

We had a very nice stay at the Volga hotel. The location is perfect, the rooms are clean, the staff are very friendly. The food is very nice but a little repetative. The hotel was geared mainly towards older people, however it was quiet and relaxing. the pool are was quite small but in June it was not overcrowded.
The entertainment was not very exciting but great for the older clientel who liked to ballroom dance. For a relaxing break it is a very nice clean hotel.

Volga Hotel is great value for money.  Good 3 Star and has recently had a make-over.  We were 3 friends 30yrs+ sharing a room Half Board.  The rooms were excellent and very spacious with 2 double beds and ample space around.  Good sea views also was an added bonus.  Bathroom was very clean.  Food was also brilliant for a 3star.  Buffet style with a fantastic choice, soups, salads, hot meals, sweets and cheese and biscuits.  A good hotel for the fussy eater - you will find something you like.  staff helpful also.  The location is also good, not in the area of noisy discos, but near enough to shops, restaurants etc and a short walk to the lively part of Calella.  Only thing with this hotel is there can be a little bit of road noise if you want complete quite then be prepared to compromise during the day around the pool.  The train stops outside the hotel but is not noticed much.  Only to the real wingers!  if you want a short break and want a good hotel for your money book this!  Stayed for only 3 nights but could have stayed much longer!

Our first impression on arrival was how clean it was.The triple room we had booked was a good size and had a sea view. The hotel has the main railway line at its rear but that did not disturb us at all( we had our two year old girl with us). There was a lot of elderly people staying there and most of the nightly entertainment was geared towards them.Bar drinks were cheap and the restaurant food was only superb.Incredible selection of food for all meals.Hotel is only five mins from beach and near to the main shopping area.Would stay in the volga without hesitation.Ten out of ten.

Recently vistied the hotel Volga and what a pleasant suprise. This was my first visit to Calella so wasn't sure what to expect. When our taxi pulled up at the Volga we were very impressed. The reception area was impressive. Reception staff spoke very good english and were extremely helpful. Rooms very nice and clean although the view from the balcony let it down as it overlooked the train-line. Great location for exploring Calella. The beach was just 100mtrs away and what a beach. Goes for miles and not crowded. The bar was very well stocked and prices were very reasonable. Decided to save the best until last.... The resturant. Wow!!!! Best food we have ever tasted abroad. 110% Congrats.............

We only stayed at the Volga for one night as we were on our way to a celebration in Barcelona. We arrived at the hotel at midnight and the satff were very accomodating. We were very suprised by the quality of the hotel especially as alpha rooms got us a great deal. To be honest we were expecting a very low budget hotel but this certainley was not the case. This hotel is perfect for visiting the coast line of the costa brava as the train line is a very short distance from the hotel and it is very inexpensive to travel on the train. We highly recommend individuals, couples or families to stay at the volga.

Review of Hotel 'VOLGA'

I would class this hotel as a good 3 star and is situated approx 100 yards from the train station and easily reached.
The reception staff are really pleasant and seem to have a wide knowledge of the area.
English money can be exchanged at the reception with a good rate of €1.40 to the pound
I was only there overnight on a business trip but was very pleased with the hotel, the rooms were spacious with shower and full bath, something you don’t seem to get with a lot of hotels these days, most rooms seem to have a sea view.
The dining room is quite big with a great selection of food to suit I would think most tastes, including an extensive salad and sweet bar.
Breakfast was also very good with the chef preparing the fried eggs on a hot plate while you wait and the best bacon I have tasted in Spain.
Any of you interested in buying your cigarettes there, there are plenty of Tabac shops on the pedestrian area a short distance from the hotel and take English money, open until 8pm.
Quite a lot of English people staying at the hotel (beginning of March 2006) and they all seemed very pleased with it, all in all a pleasant good quality hotel and I would recommend it to all
