we have just had five nights in a junior suite which we found very noisy all suites are onto the main road for a cheaper option we could have had a room with a pool view wich would have been quieter especially at six oclock in the morning otherwise the hotel was ok so if booking this hotel book a room with a pool view and you should not have any complaints

Weekend Break in Tavira
21 September 2008
Rooms very clean, Reception excellent, Breakfast excellent, good variety on the buffet. Had no problem at all with noise, although we were on the inside of the quadrant of the hotel overlooking the garden and pool areas.
Convenient for town centre which is only a short walk away. Some simple affordable restaurants nearby on the river bank.
The hotel was easy to find, and there is ample carparking in the underground car park of the hotel, which is adequately priced.
Bar was a bit expensive
We will definitely return

Excellent value - great for a short break
23 June 2008
We stayed here for 5 nights on a B&B basis. Hotel is modern & airy; staff polite & speak good English. Rooms are a good size with plenty of storage space & we had no problems with noise as suggested by other reviews. Would recommend paying extra for a pool-view room but ask for the 1st/2nd floor as some ground floor rooms have a big hedge outside the doors which obscures the view from the room. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The swimming pool is huge with plenty of sunbeds. It's a very short walk into the pretty town with its riverside bars & restaurants. Also, the hotel has its own boat (with cheap tickets) to take you to the beach on Tavira Island. We would certainly recommend the hotel & town for a short break but if you're staying longer, you might want to hire a car to explore the area.

Ideal Location
16 June 2008
Perfect location for a relaxing holiday. Wonderful beach just a short boat ride away. The hotel has its own, which will take you to the beach and return to the quayside for just a few euros. Plenty of good restaurants , eat inside or out. The hotel rooms are very clean, in fact the whole hotel is spotless. Pay that little extra for a room overlooking the pool, and on the third floor(top). Like many hotels, the noise from adjacent rooms can be heard, TV's, waterworks etc. Also the bar prices are a bit expensive. But there's plenty of choice outside in the town to enjoy a drink and watch the world go by. Would certainly go back to Tavira and this hotel.

Hotel was fine clean but noisy at times from youths outside across the street coming from the discos, hotel failed to call police and have them moved on. but be put off nice hotel.
breakfast at hotel was fine but evening dinner not very tastful after some wonderful meals in small resturants in town over the other side of the roman bridge up the little alley ways, duck with fig sauce wonderful and many other good foods and exellent prices less than 90euros for 4 with wine expressos brandy and full 4 courses. wonderful little town, and go see the camera at the old water tower you can see all over town worth going to. would go back lots of good hiking trails, also visit the little fishing village of Santa luz a nice upcoming place with good resturants just a few miles from tavira.

14 April 2008
We had huge problems with the noise at the hotel. The first night our room (2110) was close to the lifts so we had the noise of wheelie luggage on tiled floors, which sounded like thunder from about 5am. We asked to change the next day and had a room on the ground floor away from the lift but opposite the petrol station where a group of youths on bikes sociliased loudly until 4am. If I had been at home I would have asked for a police patrol car to send them packing.
This was our second visit. Last time, in November, I remember our room was a little noisy, overlooking the street, but nothing to what we had this time. I think if you get a cheap rate you are going to get one of these less saleable rooms so it is probably worth a supplement to have a room overlooking the pool. We won't be going back!

I have stayed at this hotel with my partner several times and also once myself with a friend. It feels very safe and secure with comfortable rooms and pleasant efficient staff, and I would feel confident enough to stay here alone.
The breakfasts are phenominal, the rooms very spacious and the hotel excellently situated to allow one to enjoy the charming town of Tavira on foot.
As a bonus, other guests have always proved to be quiet and courteous.

Fabulous February
20 February 2008
Our overall impression of the Vila Gale in Tavira was very good value indeed. We had decided to take 1 weeks B+B, based on the reviews of other users on this site and eat out in the town in the evenings.
The buffet style breakfasts were excellent and there was lots of choice.
The bedrooms were a good size and yes the beds are a little firm but not uncomfortably so. The room was kept spotlessly clean by the service staff with clean white towels bubble bath and shampoo renewed every day. Bed linen changed midweek.
With there being a hard tiled floor and cement walls there was an echoing feel to the hotel and if one is a light sleeper this might be a problem when the hotel is busy. Although the long corridors were carpeted you could hear the boom of the doors closing and furniture being shuffled in other rooms above.
The views from the balconies of the outside rooms are poor and overlook the streets and roads at the edge of the town. The inside rooms face each other with the pool taking centre stage.
The hotel staff were polite and helpful.

New Year Break
07 January 2008
My wife and I stayed at Vila Gale for 6 nights, 30/12/07 to 05/01/08. The hotel is highly recommended, very clean and efficient, a puzzle why the room did'nt get made-up until 3pm+. We had a junior suite and we were impressed with it's size, the outlook left a bit to be desired, market, salt flats and a delelict mill. The a/c & heating was efficient but very drying to the throat. I can only give good to the restaurant. The starters, sweets and cheese board was well catered for but the main course was generally mundane, too saucy and flavourless. The staff were very pleasant and their knowledge of English was excellent. The hotel, being situated in the town had no grounds to walk through and the cobbled streets (typically Portuguese) were very uncomfortable underfoot, recommend thick soled footwear.
We had booked the New Year Gala Dinner for which I will give 7/10. The venu was set in a large conference hall and catered for 200+ people young and old. We were sat at a large circular table for 10 with 6 other Brits (2 vacant seats) who were excellent company. The meal was good, the wine flowed copiously and the music was provided by a very qualified trio. It would have been nice to have had an 1/2 hour cabaret. Champagne flowed at midnight and we called it a night/morning at 01.30hrs. All in all a good night but at 139 euro p.p a bit on the heavy side. Certainly room for improvement hence 7/10.
Would we return? Unlikely due to its location but I would look at other hotels of the same group elsewhere in Portugal.

Get Away Christmas
30 December 2007
Nice hotel, stayed in a junior suite which was really good, friendly staff, great breakfast, but disappointed with the evening meals and especially the Christmas Gala Dinner, it was just the run of the mill buffet. If we ever went in this direction again would probably stay here again, but only on half board.

Viva Villa Gale
08 June 2007
I stayed with my boyfriend at this hotel in May 2007 for 2 weeks, and honestly I can say it is one of the best 4 star hotel's I have stayed in. The rooms are cleaned to a high standard, and the general hotel standard is very high. The pool is lovely and rarely crowded, and there are lots of sunloungers. The majority of guests are English, and a wide range of ages. The entertainment is superb in the evening, and although the bar drinks are a touch expensive, you expect that for a 4 star hotel. The breakfast consists of a wide selection, and the snack menu at lunch time is very reasonable. The evening menu wasn't quite as appealing with the limited choice, but there are lots of local restaurants within walking distance to suit your own personal choice. I would definitely return to another villa gale hotel.

VILA GALE HOTEL TAVIRA
19 April 2007
We sayed in the Vila Gale Hotel in April 2007 and would certainly recommend it and return again. It is a very spacious and clean hotel with very friendly staff who would do their utmost to help you. The choice available for breakfast is superb and we also had dinner twice which was excellent value at €18.00 per adult and €9.00 per child, with varied menus each evening. It is situated just at the edge of the town of Tavira which can be easily and safely walked to in a couple of minutes - certainly worth a visit!

Attractive building in good central location. The staff speak english and are helpful and friendly. The breakfasts are very good with lots of choice and no matter what time we ate we never had to queue for a table even though the hotel was full. Most of the guests appeared to be golfers and tour parties. Rooms were spacious and comfortable with good facilities. There seemed to be entertainment most nights but it wasn't our thing so can't comment on quality. Large outdoor pool and small one for children. Indoor health club and pool. Shuttle bus runs to their sister hotel way out in a nature reserve looking across to tavira island, which is well worth a visit. There is just one problem with the vila gale tavira hotel - the noise echoes from the atrium in the centre, guests doors banging, room partitions are very thin. Try to get a room on the top floor (3rd) or in the east wing. We ate across the bridge at aquasul and o patio which were both good. Tavira is a lovely town with wonderful beaches that go on forever. You have to catch the ferry from the 4 aguas or go out pedras d'el rei where a little train goes to barril beach.

Second time we have stayed here. Excellent hotel facilities including enormous choice of buffet breakfast (we noticed golfers discreetly packaging food for lunch?). Made use of indoor pool and jacuzzi. you need a hat for pool, available at reception for small charge. Plenty of good local restaurants for choice of evening meals. We ate at Aquasol (in old town) and would recommend booking - it was busy. Reception staff helpful and rooms spotlessly clean. Would stay here again.

This hotel has everthing you need for a comfortable stay.Rooms spacious, clean and comfortable with everything you need. Lots of comfy chairs in the lounge and reception area. Entertainment, if that is your thing but with no pressure to join in if it is not. Location perfect, near to bars & restaurants of the old town, but also on the edge of the salt pans where flocks of wading birds can be seen stilts, avocets, plovers and flamingoes. Storks can be seen in the fields and on the old chimneys next to the hotel. A magnificent beach over the river can be reached by ferry. Something for everyone.

Tavira from the Vile Gale Hotel
27 February 2007
First Impressions are so important and the Vile Gale Hotel does have the wow factor - a splendid, traditionally cobbled, well-lit, raised driveway; a very large, domed and cobalt-blue pillared foyer/reception area which includes lounge seating, a shop, tasteful information boards, computer/internet and meeting rooms etc. This area functions as a social area since it is central for access routes through to the lifts, the very spacious bar and very large dining area. The hotel forms a square around a beautiful, and again large swimming pool.
It is all extremely impressive, even more so because of its location close to the very Portuguese town centre situated either side of the River Gilao, the storks nesting aloft one of Tavira's tall derelict chimneys, its 31 old churches, and with views over the salt-flats which line the route through to the Rio de Formosa and the Islha de Tavira with its 5 mile long beautiful sandy beach. There is so much more to Tavira with its Toy Train that familiarises you with the town's attractions for 4 euros, its Roman Bridge and recently completed Roman-style square etc. and its many little restaurants hidden away down its tiny alleyways all awaiting your exploration.

This was our 5th time at the hotel. We had booked a junior suite but was not available so were given a standard room + three free meals for two at the restaurant. This was the first time we've eaten dinner at the hotel (a la carte) - my advice is don't! For an average price of 46 euros (excluding wine) really not worth the money. I would have been really hacked off if I'd had to pay! Instead head across the Roman Bridge where the restaurants are cheaper (and better) than those on the hotel side of the river. We had an outstanding meal at the Aquasul restaurant (we were told about this restaurant by a resident English GP). Otherwise hotel OK - the rooms are really well done up every day.

Hotel was in a great location close to the centre of the lovely town of Tavira. A real Portugese town with plenty to watch from one of the many cafes. Good shops too - from beautiful leather goods - handbags, belts etc to fluffy towels and food shops.
Which brings me to the downer of the holiday - the buffet in the hotel. Very mundane and pretty tasteless most of the time. The main issue is for €20 (the cost of the hotel buffet) you can get so much better value out in the village restaurants - so much more tasty.
The beach is only accessible by boat but the outdoor pool looks lovely. Indoor pool was a nice feature.

!We first stayed at the hotel one month after it opened and have been some 8 times since. it measures up extremely well in comparison to other 4* hotels in the region and can only be faulted for charging for car parking and some other incidentals. the food is varied and should suit all palates; service is excellent and staff are friendly and supportive. client groups are international and range from saga (somewhat staid), golfing groups (often noisy drinkers) to spanish/portuguese weekenders (families and all that that entails). entertainment could be fado, small groups of real musicians, dance troupes and karioke. apart from karioke, the only drawbacks for us are that the rooms are often not cleaned until late in the afternoon and the indoor pool is small and round. access to tavira town is immediate and the ability to use the beachside location of the vila gale albacora enables visits to be made to the isla tavira. would we stay again - yes, certainly

Just landed back to the rain in cork. Myself and my sister took a short break to the Vila Gala in Tavira for 3 nights. Our room was very clean and had a pool view. Had no problem with the food for breakfast. Staff were helpful and had good english. There was music in the lounge every night and it was full. Tavira is a lovely town especially the old town which is across the Roman Bridge. Eating out is very reasonable with a meal for two, coffee and a bottle of wine for 28 euro. Try the local bar across the road facing the hotel where we were given a lemonade glass of white wine for 70cents with the locals.Still dizzy ? Some of the shops in town are quaint and are much nicer than the big shopping malls. Make sure to take the boat to the beach. There are a couple of restaurants there so you can stay for the day. Most of the people staying in the hotel were elderly so it was generally very quiet. If you are looking for wild night life I would not recommend Tavira. We booked with Alpha rooms and their prices were excellent. All in all a beautiful town suitable for couples and elderly people. Definately not suitable for golfers? PS. dont forget your mosquito spray.

Hotel Vila Gale Tavira is well situated in the town of Tavira.
The room facilities and the breakfasts were excellent. The hotel is well situated for exploring the town of Tavira and for the many local restaurants. This was extremely enjoyable as Tavira has not yet been spoiled by mass tourism.
Also enjoyable is the nearby Ria Formosa Natural Park where we saw many wading birds.
We particularly enjoyed having the use of the hotel's private catarmaran taking guests to the island beach, the ferry ride was extremely enjoyable and the beach out of this world.
We also appreciated having the use of the sister hotel's amenities (Vila Gale Albacora), the pool area was particularly lovely and the hotel well worth a visit just to see the way an old tuna fishing village has been tastefully transformed into a modern hotel.
Altogether a very enjoyable stay, I would recommend this hotel.

An excellent hotel with spacious rooms, courteous staff and a very good breakfast. The hotel was spotlessly clean and all staff were friendly. Breakfast was more than you could eat including both continental and full english. Our only very small complaint was the charges for little things, ie swimming caps which were compulsory, pool towels and a 5 euro charge for the gym. The costs were not great and could have easily been included in the room rate. A highly recommended hotel in a quiet resort.

We had stayed 6 of 7 nights at the hotel Porta Nova and had to book our last night in this hotel as we left booking our accomodation too late (Our Fault).... This is an amazing hotel in terms of facilities (despite the hidden charges - Towels etc..) but in comparison to the Porta Nova which is not as plush, I found the rooms small, the staff pleasant but too buiness like and without meaning to disrespect the older generations, was a little like taking a holiday at an upmarket nursing home... Very glad that we had not booked to stay here for the 7 nights.

15 July 2005
The Hotel itself is spacious, clean and well maintained. The rooms were fairly large (even with an additional camp bed) and had everything you would expect - except tea/coffee making facilities. The downsides for us were the fact that we were directly above the restaurant/kitchens and the noise from the kitchen itself went on until late and started early. Weekends were busier as a lot of Spanish descent upon Tavira for a long weekend break. Forget getting a sunbed! However, midweek was fairly quiet and relaxed. You have to pay to park at the hotel, which is a bit annoying - works out about 25 euros per week. Overall hotel was fairly good and centrally located for the town centre and access to the A22 and N125 to Faro or Spain.
