Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis and around
16 September 2007
Was visiting Ennis on my own and wanted a city centre hotel easy and safe to get to. I have previously stayed at the Old Ground Hotel, which could not be faulted, but always like to try new places. The Temple Gate is a really good hotel, perfect location for the shops, restaurants and pubs in Ennis. Breakfast was a choice of Traditional Clare breakfast, which is a "full Irish" fry up, porridge, srambled eggs and bacon, various croissants, cereals, yoghurts, fruits, etc. Lovely choice. Staff were very helpful, even when I asked if there was a computer point they let me go into their office to print off my boarding pass for my flight. They aslo did a bit a photocopying for me for no charge. Very helpful and friendly. As I said the hotel is in a great location, easier if you are walking in, a bit more difficult to drive in due to having to drive around a ring road to get to the access road, but you get used to it. There is a free car park, just ask the reception when leaving the car park for a token. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilites and when I asked for some more milk I was brought a tray full of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits and told to keep them all. There is a "Great Hall", a function hall, which used to be the chapel when part f the hotel used to be a convent many years ago. If you have a car, you must visit the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin and then take the coast road towards Ballyvaughan to the Burren - its gorgeous. Other nice places to stop are Kilfenora, with the smallest cathedral in the world and the high crosses in it, great food at Vaughan's pub, also Lahinch, Fenore and Lisdoonvarna- especially in September for the Matchmaking Festival. This is an old tradition when farmers were introduced to suitable partners but now its a great music festival, day and night. I thought it would be worrying driving on the country roads in Ireland, but was easy and plenty signs. I also found drivers were very courteous to other drivers. Can't wait to go back.
