Ideal if you just want somewhere to sleep

29 March 2008
This former mental hospital was ideal for us as all we wanted really was somewhere just to have a sleep, abit of food at times and a drink in the evening. Our room was very small and basic - it had 2 single beds, a shower, wash basin & tv. The staff were very helpful - spoke good english and arranged taxis for us and gave information. Our linen was changed daily and the room cleaned daily which was good. The bar and dining room was basic but again ideal for a few drinks and a bit to eat, internet access was also available. Tram and buses were outside (tram-18/19 & bus 124) for the centre which was only 15 mins away and runs every 20 mins. Next door was a massive 24 hr tesco and a few shops inside were ideal for shoppers. Would i recommend?? Yes - i would return. Only real comment i have is that because of the price it seems that it caters for school trips which was a nuisance on the last night as the little sods didnt wanna sleep and was fairly noisy all night.

No frills but good value.

The Start Hotel is very basic, clean with very helpful, friendly staff. Ideal for anyone travelling on a low budget as we were. staying at this cheaper hotel allowed us to have extra money to spend on the trips which are really worth visiting, Auschwitz, the Salt Mines, the City tour and a visit to the birth place of Pope John Paul. The hotel is very handy to the the local tram and bus service which are a very reasonable price.

Very Good value for budget traveller

20 June 2007
I have just returned from a 5 night stay at Hotel Start and was very impressed with the hotel. yes it is basic but clean - the reception staff were very helpful with all enquiries. Breakfast is no longer included in the price but for 15pln (apprx £3) there is a very good buffet. Hotel bar was a bit dismal - but as we only used the hotel as a base this did not affect our time. Although Kracow is a tram ride away (no 79) it was all part of the fun learning to read time tables and jumping on and offeach day. one word of advice - if you book on a tour that picks you up from hotel - don't expect to be dropped off back there!

The hotel was comfortable, warm and the rooms were well presented. The staff all spoke English and were polite and knowledgeable.
Although the hotel was a few miles from the town centre, the public transport links were excellent and the taxi prices were reasonable on average about £3.00.
This hotel represented value for money and if you are only staying a few days it is an ideal base.

Having read some of the glowing reports about this hotel I am totally amazed, I was even more shocked to find that there were other guests. I have stayed in some really nice cheap and cheerful places before, apart from being cheap that is excactly what it says on the tin. The hotel needs to move into the post communist era, fast. Yes it was clean just but very, very, dog eared, and the hotel staff friendly but that was the only best bit. The bedding in our rooms was falling to pieces and the beds in urgent need of an upgrade. The hotel is long way from the centre in a former Soviet style housing estate. Yes, if you speak Polish both trams and buses are on the door step, quite litrally. Sorry but this hotel shows Poland in a really poor light. I promise never to let my daughter book accom again.

This hotel is very basic and the price reflects this.  The bathroom is modern and clean.  The rooms are functional but there is nothing nice about them.  The beds are very hard being just a board with a very thin foam covering. There are no tea & coffee making facilities. Beds are made daily and fresh towels are given.  Breakfast is OK.  It's a bit too far out of town but there are buses & trams outside and a taxi to the centre costs around £4.  Taxi transfer to airport £12.  There are no pubs/restaurants in the vicinity, only a 24 hr Tesco next door.

The Reid and Pymm stay at tha START hotel

03 December 2006
stayed B+B at the START hotel from the 18th to the 21st November 2006 with our two friends. When we arrived at the hotel we thougth the taxi driver had got it wrong and took us to the hospital insted of our hotel. It didnt get mutch better when we entered to say the reception area was basic is to say the least and the rooms were just as bad and cold, although the toilet had been totaly renewed. Breakfast was OK the usual contenental + scambled eggs and plenty of it.
The hotel is not a short distance from the historic centre of Krakow it took us over an hour to walk to the old square although a taxi back only cost us about £5. I would say the START hotel was more suited to younger people looking for something cheap and cheerful.
The city itself is a lovely place and well worth going to, we will definitely go back sometime in the future. To sum up the START hotel i would say it was very basic but spotlessly clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful good value for the price

Loved the city and would definately visit again.Found the hotel great value for money.Rooms were clean and the shower was in excellent working order.Found the reception staff very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much bother.Other friends of ours were staying near the main square but we only had to jump on a tram (just down from the hotel)and we were there in about 20 minutes. It was handy to have the 24 hour Tescos nearby too.

I read the other reviews and thought what have I booked with the exception of one all condemmed the START. We kept an open mind and were pleasantly surprised, the rooms are basic but clean and functional, the bathroom is modern with a good shower.
The breakfast was an average continental breakfast, the tea was awful, but I am a Brit abroad always complaining about the tea. The rooms were serviced daily with fresh towels and beds made. Yes the exterior of the building is not great and there is an essence of old hospital about the place but for the price and location it would be very difficlut to beat.
