This hotel has been transferred to Sol and renamed Sol Puerto de la Cruz. I understand that this is a downgrade and can appreciate that.
What the brochure does not tell you that there are over 150 steps between the hotel and the town. Everywhere is hilly.
What it also does not tell you that half the rooms face onto a very busy and noisy cross roads which reduce the effectiveness of the balcony and will give light sleepers an early wake up call. The sun is on these balconies in the morning only
Of the other half those on the top three floors have a great sea view, the others look into adjacent properties or onto a retaining wall. I cannot comment on the sun, but it appears that they do not get any.
The food is average, except for the vegetables, which were almost always overcooked and tasteless. The meat and fish cooking depended very much on the chef and what was already cooked in advance.
The place is clean but showing signs of wear and tear, loose toilet seats, wonky cupboards, etc.
The staff are friendly and helpful, but some knowledge of Spanish is an asset.

Another 1st class Sol Hotel
07 September 2007
My daughter and myself stayed at the Sol Puerto de la Cruz on a business trip. We also stay at either a Sol or Melia Hotel, as we find these are the best all round 1st class hotels. Again, the Sol Puerto de la Cruz is 1st class in every way, accommodation, food, and staff.

Review of 'MELIA PUERTO DE LA CRUZ'
11 January 2007
A good all round hotel. Clean accomodation. Good food, although sometimes a little short on choice.
Minor critisism 1, there are 3 very small lifts and for the period of my stay, one was out of use. It made certain times of day a pain to get up and down from the room. Minor critisism 2, the machine fruit juices at breakfast were undrinkable and fresh orange was a chargable item. Spoilt an otherwise good breakfast.

Review of 'MELIA PUERTO DE LA CRUZ'

We stayed at this hotel during July 2004 and a very enjoyable stay to. We found the staff very helpful and polite and nothing was too much trouble. The guests were mainly Spanish with a spattering of Brits, Scandanavians and the odd German. The food we found to be very good with a nice variety with some cooked while you wait as well as the buffet. Plenty of sunbeds and mattresses and free towels for swimming as well and not crowded(in fact I have some video of my wife swimming completely alone at 1pm one day!). The entertainment (most evenings)was all spanish although most music is international anyway.Only one down side and this was that the decoration in the rooms and corridors was tired although the public areas was very good( the floors above were being refurbished whilst we were there). Therefore we recommend this hotel.

We stayed in this Hotel for 14 days over Easter, the staff are wonderful so helpfull the food was very good breakfast there was so much choice even diabetic jams yogurts etc ,they cook your eggs pancakes omlets while you wait ,even have boiled eggs 5mins or 7mins we travel five times a year and ihave never seen that before the dinners were very good but a bit repetitive also cooked meat or fish while you wait. The posistion of the Hotel wouldnt suit disabled unless you get a taxi as its on a very very steep hill taxis were only 2.50euros to the front (down hill)most people had taxi home there are some steps they call cardiac steps but they would keep you fit if you are able, there is also a free coach every hour out side the hotel door that takes you down near the front and shopping centre it runs till 6.15pm monday-friday. The pools are very good and there are plenty of sunbeds with matresses and theres no saving them !!All bedrooms and landings are carpeted so theres no noise ,they are refurbing the bedrooms bathrooms 7 and 6 floors are now compleat. The town is very interesting old and new a spectacular front with giant atlantic waves crashing on the rocks there is also Lidos and beautiful gardens and a surfing beach. There are many beautiful squares in the town and theIncas play the pipes at all diferent times of the day and night and many excellant resturants our favourite was the one by the rocks at the end of the prom where you can look out through arches at the breakers and very reasonable over all a wonderful holiday we will return Tom and Jenny Bournmouth
