Highs and Lows
27 September 2008
We stayed at the Skylane for one night before and one night after our holiday. After reading various reviews , we expected the worst but we were transferred from the airport without fuss and on arrival at the hotel were allocated a fresh, modern room with en-suite shower and wall mounted T.V. screen. No complaints about our evening meal or cooked breakfast either. Why were so many people dissatisfied we wondered?
We returned one week later to a very different scenario. On arrival we were allocated a rather dingy room with no reception on the small ,old fashioned T.V.
The en-suite was old fashioned and required a good scrub but worst of all as we discovered in the morning, although there was hot and cold water from the wash basin taps, there was hardly a drip to be had from the bath taps and since the small shower head was attached ---no shower to be had either! As we had a connecting plane to catch for our homeward journey we did not have time to wait for a plumber to be called but had to make do with a quick wash. Of course we still wonder how the room maids manage to clean the bath with no water or do they bother?
Overall a very different picture of the same hotel!

Impressed
27 July 2008
I wasn't expecting much after reading some of the reviews but the room was modern, well furnished and clean. The staff were friendly. Breakfast was good but depends on preference. English breakfast and lots of it. We had a meal at night in the hotel. It was decent pub grub. Dining room was a bit tired but hotel under refurbishment. Proximity to Gatwick was just a few minutes tranfer by hotel transport which was free. Always a bonus for a Scot. If I were to fly from Gatwick again I would book this hotel. Great value for money.

Excellent

Since my last stay a few years ago I was very impressed with the standard of the double room which we had. On the downside though, breakfast was grim. Will definately stay here again though

Unexpected pleasure
08 June 2008
for the price we pai and the fact it was 2* we were not holding out for much. I have stayed in 2* at Gatwick before and it was awful. I have to say we were very surprised at how fab this hotel actually was. The transfers are free (finish at 12) the bed was so comfortable and the breakfast was nice. i will definately be booking here again.

en route home to France
27 January 2008
We left too early to have breakfast but the room needed serious work to bring it up to a welcoming standard. The rebuild is in hand albeit late. The shuttle bus starts at 0600 too late for the first palne to Toulouse. Generall not bad for the price

Happy Traveler

I have stopped over at a few small hotels in the Gatwick area for one nighter’s while traveling in and out of the UK. It’s usually my wife that books the hotel and being Scottish she likes a good bargain. The Skylane fits the bill. As other have said it could do with a facelift as it has a distinct 60’s – 70’s look. But there are signs of some reservation being done at the moment. As somewhere to get the head down for one night and at the price for the area you will be hard pressed to beat this hotel. Good breakfast, pleasant service and only 10 mun’s from the airport.

The location of this hotel was ideal for an overnight stay before an early flight out of Gatwick the following day. The free shuttle bus was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The downside to the hotel was it is in desperate need of a paint job. Although it is kept clean and tidy the furniture, carpets, curtains were all old looking and tatty. The rooms contained everything you would need for an overnight stop and the breakfasts were lovely. Again the Restaurant would benefit from a refurb. Definitely beats sleeping at the airport though especially as the staff are so welcoming. Would consider staying again.

Skylane Hotel, Gatwick
09 July 2007
Booked this hotel for an overnight stay, to avoid catching a bus at 5a.m. It proved to be a good move (other than a 2 hour delay on the M25!). The hotel staff were very welcoming and efficient; the room was clean, comfortable and quite roomy: Breakfast was adequate with choices. The best aspect was the free shuttle from and to the airport - I waited only 10 minutes to be picked-up at Gatwick Airport, and pre-booked the 09.30 departure the following morning, arriving at the departure terminal within 10 minutes. I would recommend this hotel for those with an early morning flight departure. Good value for money.

Review of 'Skylane Hotel Gatwick'
08 April 2007
The hotel was quite nice. Reasonably clean and tidy. I can't really moan for 46.50 the only gripes I had were the room smelt of smoke, the bed cover had a tear and the plumbing pipes ran through the wall, into each room. This had the effect of having a hole in the wall and I could clearly hear what was on the tele, or being said in the next room. Shuttle to and from the airport was useful though.
