Excellent hotel and city

09 May 2008
We stayed here for May Day Bank holiday weekend. We were due to arrive late anyway but then our flight was delayed. We emailed the hotel from the airport to make sure they knew we were still coming and they emailed straight back to confirm everything was ok. On arrival we were given a room on the top floor which had a lovely balcony. Rooms were clean. Staff very friendly. Great location. The Gran Via metro stop is right outside so easy access to everywhere if you are short of time or don't like walking. Would definitely stay here again. Also the mini bar is still free!

Had a girly weekend in madrid and it was great. The hotel was lovely and clean and the staff were really helpfull. we did try out our spanish ( that was our excuse for the trip!!) :-) But all the staff spoke english and were really helpfull. The hotel is remarkably quiet inside, considering its location. Hotel is in a great location and lots of bars and sights are within easy reach. Fantastic, will definately be going again!

Excellent hotel & location! Going back in September 07

26 June 2007
Stayed in Senator Gran Via for 3 nights at end of May 07. We were very impressed with this hotel and would recommend it to anyone! Free Mini Bar is also a nice added extra and the shuttle bus service to the Airport is also a good idea. It is also in a great location to everywhere and not too pricey!! We are going back again in Sept 07.

Centrally luxurious!

08 May 2007
An excellent location with very smart, luxurious rooms. The reception area was small and was a little overcrowded at times but the staff were efficient and pleasant. The rooms were a touch small but more than adequate and very quiet considering location. Breakfast was plentiful although service was a little slow on our visit and the food spread over numerous sections. Should however be on top of anyone's list for a visit to Madrid! Really can't go wrong here!

From the friendly welcome at check-in to the courtesy at check out we had a fantastic stay. The central location was superb for exploring the city. The traquility of the hotel's interior was in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Gran Via outside. A thouroughly enjoyable stay.

I think the Gran Via was a great find. The hotel is clean, perfectly located in down town Madrid, the staff are friendly and the breakfast excellent. To top it off, when they offer a complimentary bottle of champagne for my husband on his birthday, this was a very special touch, much appreciated.

We would like to thank you very much for a wonderful stay at your hotel the accommodation was lovely.

Our only comments would be that we did not receive 10% discount on our evening meals as advertised but had to pay full price.

Also we realise that this is out of your control but we were a bit shocked with the number of street girls touting for business outside the hotel.

Spent two nights in the Hotel last month. Had a most enjoyable time.  Hotel was perfect in every way.  Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely bedroom with reclining chair and free minibar. Also complimentary fruit and Cava all day at Reception.  A really nice touch.  Breakfast was excellent. Lots to choose from including Bacon and Eggs! Hotel in a perfect spot on Gran Via. As far as we could make out the Hotel was non smoking except of course the bar. Lots of little local bars all around.  All in all a perfect experience.  We are going back again in March.

16 December 2006
The hotel is situated in a perfect location on the Gran Via for all visitors wishing to visit museums, shops and general sight seeing in central Madrid. I found this hotel to be everything you would expect of a 4 star hotel and more. The staff were courteous and friendly and very willing to help when requested. The room was very comfortable with reclining beds and also a reclining armchair for relaxing in. My first surprise when checking into the hotel was being told the the mini bar in my room was free, this was a first for me and a nice touch by the hotel management, but more was to come. During my stay I was to encounter yet another birthday, I was not paying too much attention or putting any importance on this event but the hotel had other ideas. You can only imagine my surprise when returning to my room on the afternoon of my birthday to find a table set with a big bowl of fruit, mineral water, and a bottle of reserve champage on ice awaiting for me. I was later informed that this is a policy of management for all guests reaching another birthday while staying in this hotel, its a very nice touch and very much appreciated. My date of birth was obtained while checking in and giving a photocopy of my passeport. The breakfast was buffet style with a selection of food to suit all tastes. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Excellent location. Easy to walk to many locations or catch the metro as hotel is right outside the Gran Via Metro Station. We rang the night before and confirmed reservation. Asked for room with balcony and they were very obliging. Room 806. Very comfortable fittings, reclining armchair, electric tilting bed, batch and shower, but maybe a tad cramped. Great view over the city and coffee on your own balcony in the morning had a lovely feel!! Breakfasts excellent. Not that we watched any really, but TV reception was lousy - none of the stated English channels available. Free mini bar was a plus as well as free fruit and drinks available in the lobby. Very helpful staff - all in all would go back there again, no problem and highly recommend.

Excellent buffet breakfast and staff who dotn rush you to leave.Modern, clean and definitely not mean the Senator Gran via is the place to be seen......

The hotel was clean and rooms were bright, spacious and quiet.  We were on the 7th floor and had a balcony offering a great view of the city.

Breakfast was fine, with a chef making delicious omelettes to order, although breakfast room staff were not as attentive as I have experienced elsewhere.

Location was great and if we were to re-visit Madrid we would stop there again.

hotel was excellent location managed to walk everywhere the only problem were all the young prostitutes on the corner of the street .  There was a great Police presence so we didn't feel threatened just not very nice to see.

The hotel was very clean and the breakfast was more than adequate.

The only downside was the fact that the hotel says it has a pool and rooftop terrace which is no longer in use which was very disapointing all in all a good stay

Review of 'SENATOR GRAN VIA'

11 June 2006
We chose to stay at the Senator Gran Via after hearing good reviews of it and we were not disappointed.
The hotel was very centrally located, right on one of the main streets in Madrid and next to a Metro station.  Although the hotel was on a very noisy street, you would not know it when the double glazed windows were closed as the room was almost silent. The staff were extremly helpful, all speaking excellent English and were happy to help with any queries we had.  We requested some extra milk late one evening as I was in need of some tea and we had run out of milk and within about 5 minutes, several small cartons were delivered to our room.
Other lovely touches were the free minibar which was restocked daily.  Although it mostly contained soft drinks and water, there were also a couple of beers which were very welcome.  The bed was the most comfortable I have ever stayed in for a hotel and the pillow menu was also very welcome.
One piece of advice is to request a room with a large balcony as you will have good views over the city.  Many rooms have small balconys but if you ask for a large one you will get a much more substantial stone one which is very nice to relax on with a beer in the evening!

We have just returned from a city break in Madrid and stayed at the Senator gran Via. The reviews of previos guests on Alpharooms gave a fair picture of what to expect at tehhotel. The staff were very friendly, and it is a nice touch to have the Welcome drinks beside the reception area. There is juice,Cava and water available. The Pillow menu in our well appointed room was a nice touch, as was the tilting beds. The only downside was that we had requested a double room as it was our Wedding anniversary, but otherwise I had no problems with hotel. The free mini bar is also a nice touch, while limited it is still a nice touch. There are ice machines on the 2nd 4th & 6th floors so it is handy if you wish to make your own cocktails. We would definitely stay at the Senator again , and we intend to visit Madrid again. Breakfast was included in our room rate, which availed of everyday. It was an ideal buffet, with selection of fresh fruits, Danishes, Meats, Yoghurts and tehre was a hot counter where the Chef would cook eggs, bacon or omelettes to order.
As my wife commented the Ladies of the Night who congragate outside McDonalds bring a new Meaning to the Term McHappy Meal! While their presence is noticeable outside the Hotel, there is always a visible Police presence. If you are going to visit Madrid we would reccomend you stay at teh Seantor Gran Via, it is in a Central Location for all attractions.

Excellent hotel in a great location.

We were allocated a corner room, so got the advantage of a larger room with 3 balconies - great for overlooking the Gran Via.

The little extras in the hotel really made it a pleasant stay - free mini bar & safe, pillow menu, robes and ice machines.  Only negative comment would be the attitude of one or two of the waitresses in the restaurant.

A few 'ladies of the night'stand across the road from the hotel - could be off putting, but it didn't really bother us as they kept to themselves.

Overall a great hotel in a great city - recommended!!

The central location was superb. Very accessible to shops, bars and restaurants and right near the metro station. We were delighted with the room which had a stereo, free mini bar and a small balcony overlooking Grand Via itself. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the bendy beds (electonically adjustible relcining) added to the sense of relaxation and aided very enjoyable siestas!
Breakfast was served until 11am which was great if you were out late and offered a great selection. All staff were friendly and helpful. I would definately recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the Senator Gran Via on the 16th and 17th March 2006. The hotel is one of the best 4 star hotels I have stayed at and has some lovely 5 star touches such as the free mini bar and the free dental and shaving kits in the bathroom.

They also offer free fruit and some drinks beside the reception desk.

Room 206 is a decent size with a large wrap-around balcony overlooking the Gran Via.

There is a good police presence in the area and if you are a couple you will be ignored by the working girls. If you do find the street where the girls are (Calle Montera) not to your taste then walk up the Gran Via to Calle Carmen/Calle Preciados (2 minutes walk) and turn down one of them to get to Plaza del Sol.

Great location, right outside the metro.Breakfast selection was excellent. Unfortunately the restaurant staff were very unfriendly, no smile or greeting any morning we were there. Never showed us to a table had to find our own. The bar was great, always busy and staff there at least smiled at you. The bedrooms unfortunately were extremely small. Although they had all the amenities there including a free mini bar which was replenished every day. Rooms were spotless. If you want a large bedroom this is not for you. If room size does not matter, then this is a perfect hotel.

This is an excellent hotel for a city break. It is central to all the sights of Madrid, and directly by the Gran Via metro station. Our room, though perhaps a little small was well appointed and spotlessly clean. The beds were extremely comfortable and both my wife and I slept soundly for the 3 nights we stayed. As previously mentioned the minibar in the room is complimentary with water, soft drinks and beer available, topped up each day by the excellent cleaning staff.

The breakfasts were of the highest standard, freshly squeezed orange juice, bacon, eggs & sausages cooked to order, and a very wide range of cold meats, cheese, yoghurts and breads every day. The staff were exceptionally helpful throughout the hotel and most spoke enough English to overcome any lack of Spanish on our part.

We both would fully recommend this hotel to anyone visitng Madrid, and will stay there again when we return in the future.

Its amazing the metro station is literally outside the door of the hotel. The hotel was clean, friendly, and the rooms have a free mini bar, tea and coffee and internet in the rooms. The restaurant isn't exactly mindblowing but then you're so close to good food around Sol and Gran via that its no problem. However I must say they did have churros on the breakfast buffet- yummy. Also one of the guys on reception was from the same place as me in Suffolk! what are the chances of that?

Review of 'SENATOR GRAN VIA'

08 December 2005
Though the room was small, it was very clean and extremely well designed.  Many "extras" made the stay more comfortable--a safe, iron and ironing board, TV with multilingual channels, high-speed internet access (very expensive at 20 Euros/day or 6 Euros per hour), a kettle with tea and coffee, a compact stereo and a free stocked bar fridge.  The bathroom with tub/shower was large and spotlessly clean and the water pressure excellent.  The room had a view and a tiny balcony with double-glazed doors, which kept the street noise to a minimum.

The included breakfast offered an excellent selection, including champagne, fresh fruits, cereals, juices, cheeses, pastries and breads, smoked salmon, eggs to order and sausages.  The diningroom staff was not overly helpful, though the front desk staff was always friendly and helpful, and able to assist in English at all times.  I did not use room service or the hotel's restaurant/bar, which seemed to offer a good lunch and dinner menu at reasonable prices.

The hotel itself is built around a marble atrium with skylights, and glass elevators on the inside of the atrium.  There are many cosy seating areas around the hotel's entrance area.

The location is excellent--right opposite a Metro station, adjacent to a main bus stop and with taxis readily available at all hours.  There are many restaurants, shops and attractions in close walking distance, and there is a large internet facility right across the street.

I would highly recommend the hotel, and would certainly stay there again.  My rate from AlphaRooms.com was extremely competitive.

I would highly recommend

The hotel is conveniently situated in the centre of Madrid and within walking distance of all the attractions. Our room was clean and smart with all the facilities you could wish for including a free mini bar containing beer water and soft drinks, ice from a machine nearby and a room safe which was also free and simple to operate. The breakfast was of a high standard with hot food cooked to order. We liked the hotel and would recommend it to others. The one thing we found strange though, for a hotel in a late night city like Madrid, the bar closed at midnight!

There was a problem with our room booking on arrival but staff were very helpful and efficient and sorted it out while we had a complimentary coffee.  The room was very nice, large, spotlessly clean with everything you could need including an iron!  Also free minibar (non alcoholic) was welcome.  Excellent location, very central.  Area extremely busy with constant traffic noise outside but insulation meant it did not intrude.  Could walk everywhere.  Waterfall/stream in covered area in middle of hotel, glass lifts.

Staff very helpful but certain lack of 'cosiness' maybe because of professionalism which could not be faulted.

Shuttle service back to airport very useful, only 6 euros per person.

Very good choice at breakfast.  Adjacent bar also good.

This hotel is clean and well kept. The decor is excellent & the rooms up to date & well equipped. We had an 8th floor room with a sun terrace -fantastic after a day trooping round this beautiful elegant city to sit & relax in the late evening sun. Free mini bar meant a cool beer & refreshing juice on tap!The staff at Senator were friendly, helpful & cheerful. Nothing was too much trouble. The location is excellent - 10 mins walk to the centre. Interesting views to the left side street of the hotel -ladies of the night(in the day!)but non-intrusive and never a problem. We had a lovely 4 nights here and would certainly recommend this hotel to friends. Classy & elegant - not overly expensive and tasty breakfast thrown in - ideal attributes. thanks to Alpha rooms for helping us get there>

Review of 'SENATOR GRAN VIA'

29 September 2005
The Senator Gran Via is a superb hotel for a number of reasons which i will endeavour to cover within a certain amount of words!  Firstly, the staff are genuinely helpful, to which you may say "So What?" but it goes a long way! Secondly, the location is great being just a 10 minute walk to the cooler areas of Chueca and La Latina as well as equi-distant from major tourist attractions such as the Royal Palace and Prado Museum.  It is also located next to the METRO which is great to get round the city and also to get to and from the airport.  For just 1 Euro you can get from the airport literally to the door of the hotel so forget that taxi! Finally, breakfast is brilliantly substantial, setting you up for the day with a guy making omelettes to your liking and more croissants than you can ever wish to eat. In the bedrooom there are 2 things to look out for; the free mini bar which is welcome after walking round the city and also the adjustable bed position which allows you to sit up and read in bed without having to sit up against the wall! Genius.  It's not an uber-cool hotel but pleasant in design and still feels pretty new.

We just returned from our honeymoon in Spain, which started in Barcelona and ended at the Senator Gran Via in Madrid.  I found it a fantastic value for all the ammenities, and location it offers.  You can read about all of these in the other reviews.

I was very impressed.  I often travel for business, and stay only in 4 & 5 star hotels.  By American standards, the rooms were small for a four star hotel, (comparable to a hotel room in South Beach) and the bellman was nowhere to be found...at check-in or out, but overall I would recommend it to anyone.

One thing to mention ... it is right beside a 'red-light' type street, where adult entertainment and ladies of the night are available.  Do not take a left out of the hotel lobby if you do not want to expose yourself to this..... but if you do, it is RIGHT there.

No consierge desk, but the front desk is very helpful with reservations.

Hotel Senator Gran Via is fine it is clean and benefits like free minibar and a good selection for breakfast and its central location make for a perfectly acceptable stay. On the minus side this place is trading on past glories some what. The interior is pure 80's glamour with a mild Las Vegas delusion. Americans love it. It advertises a roof top swimming pool but this has been closed for some while as it leaks into the rooms below. You will need to be up early for breakfast in the tiny restaraunt or wait in line for 20minutes if you get up at 10 o'clock. On the plus side it has free entertainment outside throughout the night, air con works, double glazing works and its 20 metres to the nearest metro or less than 10 minutes walk to most central attractions. You could do worse than this place but don't pay more than 100 euros a night for a room.

oasis in the middle of the madness

14 June 2005
We recently returned from a three night stay in the Senator Gran Via, situated in the centre of Madrid.

The four star hotel is fantastic,  a beautiful attrium where glass elevators guide visitors to their rooms spread over eight stories, overlooks the lower ground restaurant.

The rooms are very clean with nice touches such as adjustable beds, reclining easy chair, tea making facilities, tv and stereo. The FREE mini bar contains a couple of beers, soft drinks, water and juices. Just the thing to end the night.
And whatever is drank is replaced the next day by the very efficient maids.

Our room(5th floor) overlooked the main road (Gran Via) which is six lanes wide and always busy but dispite the traffic noise and street bars , the double galzing kept out the sounds and a great night sleep can be had ( the free beers help) and the stories of the late night revellers is true!

The air conditioning kept the room perfect cos its a hot place in the summer.

The location of the hotel is ideal for visiting all site sites.
Twenty mins. each direction takes in the plazas, museums, parks and the palace as well as hundreds of great bars and eating places.

Madrids fantastic train service (metro) is just outside along with bus stops. Only downside is the hotel is one the corner of the red light district but although you can see the girls hanging around there was no problems at all.( Loads of police in Madrid)

The city is so beautiful. full of life and the perfect place for a short break (hot in June, would think July and August might be too uncomfortable).

The staff where very friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet style was lovely (eat and drink as much as you like)

If you are looking to visit Madrid , we would certainly recommend the Senator Gran Via. At about £100 per night for a double room with breakfast and free mini bar its good value for a great hotel. Stay here and enjoy a wonderful city.

We,ll be back, Adios

The hotel is a great value in Madrid if not all of Europe.  The management understands how to build a customer focused hotel.  The greeting from the reception (front office) is excellent with multilingual staff EAGER to please.  The rooms are spacious, and all have energy efficient bulbs (a real plus) for an environmentally concious traveller.  The hotel features high speed internet in all rooms for a reasonable charge.  There is also high speed wireless internet on the second floor for less, but it currently is only available on the second floor and public areas.

If you book through the internet make sure that you get the rate with breakfast included; it is a full breakfast (meats, cheeses, breads, cereals, fruits, and made to order omelettes).  The free minibar including beer, non-alcoholic beer, coke, coke light, fanta, mineral water, and regular water is excellent.  It is refilled daily, and the rooms are cleaned at least 1x if not more per day.

The bar staff is perhaps the hotel's only area of weakness.  I waited over 15 minutes for service, and finally left.  The area has plenty of resteraunts, and is frequented by young professionals.  It is a great value, and the staff makes it an excellent idea to stay here.
