Wonderful value in excellent hotel
Having just returned from a week in Side for a family wedding, we wanted to give our impressions of the Selge Hotel. We were a party of five adults.
When our friends were told how little we had paid for our reservation, they expected the worst (we paid around 24 UKP per person for a week's stay, including breakfast.) They couldn't have been more wrong!
Rooms are certainly basic, but very clean. Beds comfortable, pleanty of hot water, handy balcony overlooking the swimmning pool.
Staff and management uniformly excellent, service was friendly and prompt, the waiters and restaurant staff deserve an extra 'thank you' for their attentiveness and politeness.
The restaurant (our table was by the pool) was first-class. - a wide range of dishes, uniformly of good quality, and around half the price one would pay in the main tourist area of the town (we tried that once, but were disappoointed.)
To challenge a few negative points that have been raised in other reviews:
Yes, the street outside does play host to a number of 'ladies of the night' in the evenings. They don't bother anyone, and simply do their job. Indeed, it made an interesting specator sport for our party when we adjourned to the bar after dinner.
The breakfast is a Turkish breakfast, and we found it excellent, despite the comments of one or two other reviewers. Olives, meat, cheeses, water melon, fruit juices, bread and preserves, tea and coffee. Oh and LOTS of boiled eggs!
Yes, if you are overlooking the pool, you will experience some music playing till around 1 am from the bar and restaurant area. It never bothered us, and the balcony door cuts the noise down to a very low level.
Air conditioning is extra, certainly, and, trust me, you will need it. But at around 20 UKP for the week, we didn't feel the cost was excessive, considering the initial price we paid for the stay.
Contrary to the experiences of some other visitors, we had no problems with either hot water (copious) or language - all the staff spoke at least basic English, and many of them were fluent.
Our rooms were clean, as had been mentioned, and serviced daily. We really had none of the negative experiences that seem to have been encountered by a few other visitors.
Sole negative point - the television in the bar adjoining the restaurant is turned on for EVERY possible football match, and this we did find annoying, especially as perhaps only one person was actually watching it. But the ever-helpful staff were very happy to turn the volume down to an acceptable level when we asked. We appreciate that the hotel has to cater to football fans, as, if they don't, these may make their way (and spend their money) in another establishment that DOES offer this facility.
The wedding we were attending was held in the Side Prenses, a five-star establishment, which, in our view, couldn't hold a candle to the Selge. Large and impersonal, reminiscent of a marble-clad Butlins. The self-service restaurant there was, we thought, the mosty beautifully decorated canteen we had ever encountered. The food was inferior, too, frequently cold and generally unappetising. And the bar closed at midnight on the day of the wedding!!! We were happy to return to the Selge for a late-night drink!
All in all, a delightful experience and one we would happily repeat. Maybe next year....
The best thing about my stay was…
Hard to say, but the friendly and helpful staff has to be the best point of all.
