Overview
Being a typical city hotel, one can take advantage of the towns shopping centers, its beautiful and well cared public gardens, esplanades, coffee shops, restaurants and bars, the aqua park (only one on the island), swimming facilities, the promenade that accompanies the towns sea front and more, much more. The bus stop for public transportation is less than 50 meters from the hotel and on the opposite side of the bus stop; one can take a glimpse of the grandiosity, 450 year old church. Two pharmacies, a health centre, supermarkets, taxi service, rent-a-car, banks, various ATM points, post office, all a step away from your convenience. The Santa Catarina hotel was built in 1996, typical Madeirian architecture, on the exact site of an ancient sugar cane mill called commonly known as “Engenho”. Some of the original features have been preserved becoming prominent in the interior design of the hotel. It’s through theses picturesque features, which provide the hotel with its unique ambiance. For those who appreciate tranquility, nature and Madeirian cultural events, the Santa Catarina hotel offers you an unforgettable welcoming and very cozy atmosphere, with an excellent team of friendly and very dedicated stall members to make your holiday very relaxing and pleasant.For golf lovers, the hotel is located 15 minutes (either way) from the two main golf courses in Madeira, the PGA Golf course of Santo da Serra and the Palheiro Golf course (closer to Funchal).

Nice hotel fantastic value
Rated as four star due to having the facilities such as pool, games room, restaurant, bar etc. but in reality should be considered as three star. On that basis it is fantastic value for money although the inclusive breakfast is at a pretty basic level. The rooms are spotless with cleaning and towel change every day and sheet change twice a week. The restaurant and bar though small are nice. The staff helpful and friendly. Two negatives: the advertised satelite tv consists of about 14 channels only one of which is English speaking; BBC Entertainment; possibly the worst channel on the planet, and the tv set should have gone out with the ark. Also, no tea making facility in the rooms!! Not good enough for even a three star hotel!! So take a travel kettle and get all the coffee milk etc from the local supermarket.
The resort of Santa Cruz is a pretty little town with about a dozen bar/restaurants but don't expect anything inspiring in the way of food. It's all basic cafe food such as chicken and chips, hamburgers, pizzas. There is ZERO entertainment available in the evenings although we were there in late March so it may be you get some when high season comes around.
The regular bus into Funchal takes 45 minutes but is worth it for the scenery and the express bus takes 20 minutes and is worth it to see the engineering feats in building the motoraway it runs along. In summary, great value, ideal base if you are into hill walking but not so good if you like some evening entertainment.
