well worth the value
13 October 2007
we stayed in the Gothard for the 2nd time in the year ( July and Oct) the 2nd time we stayed ( October ) we got a great room with balcony overlooking the street ( better view than last time ) the room was great for what you pay, you pay cheap - you get cheap, we just neede a BASE and we got one, breakfast was just enough for us, some may argue to differ but it was great for us. Staff very very helpful and friendly. For the amount of time you spend in the room it was just right. The beds are low yes, but that didnt bother us. The 1 thing that was very annoying was the BANGING of bedroom doors ...... maybe they could invest in a SLOW CLOSING SYSTEM, apart from that ..... 10/10

Basic but OK
29 September 2007
We stayed in rooms 301 and 101 while we were in Nice (2 nights in each room), room 101 had more modern fittings. The beds are low and the mattresses are not very deep, so you may find them uncomfortable. This hotel is good value for money compared to some in the area. Don't expect Novotel or IBIS levels of quality at these prices. Ideal if you are using it for bed and breakfast. The staff were very helpful, and the service was good. We found it safe to explore the area during the day.

Clean hotel
20 September 2007
You get what you pay for but for the price was quite good.idealy suited for the train station.99 bus from airport to station is direct then its just a 3 min walk to hotel.Reception staff helpfull and manned 24/7.Very basic rooms with no drawers but a wardrobe and table, clean towels changed everyday bedding every other.Plenty of hot water and presure good.We stayed for seven days.Breakfast not swish,2 cereal,Cros -bread and jam, water and thin orange juice, tea and coffee. hotel fully booked all week with all age groups only sounds we heard where from doors closing to activate lock.Air conditioning worked Ok but think the reson why you can notice odours is that they do not have an extractor in the toilet of the room we were allocated.Quickly airs out once you open the windows following showers etc.Very Quiet considering location.loads of good eating places in adjacent streets.Easy to walk in area and did,nt feel threatened walking during day or late in evening.

Pleasant surprise
30 August 2007
Not too bad for what we paid. The location was great for what we needed bus took us almost to the door, we then caught a train to our next destination so being a 2min walk from the station was great. Easy 10mins walk from the beach. Hotel staff were friendly and helped us with any extras we needed. Plenty of dining options within a few minutes walk. Laundry just 1 block up which was great for us as we´d been travelling for a while. All in all we paid the same price as a hostel and it was great to have the privacy of a hotel.

good base camp
21 August 2007
i thought that for a 2* this place was great. its simple and basic with the add ons of air-con, tv (but dont know why you would need it as a tourist), towels, soaps. its location is great so you dont have to lug your bag too far from the bus stop right near the train station. its a 10-15 minute walk (25-30 min stroll) via the main shopping area which leads onto the square and the old Jewish section, then onto the sea front.
my only concern was with breakfast: in that all the cold milk had gone and the two cereal options were poor. however, the croissant, baguette, coffee, tea, and orange were fine, but it didn't really set you up for the day.
the staff were helpful and made recommendations on where to go eat, see, and do.
the hotel would hold your bag for a Euro per bag, fine by me.
a great base camp.

There are far better alternatives!
01 August 2007
Used Nice as a hub/base from which to visit my girlfriend's family and attend her friend's wedding, so ended up with three stints in three different hotels. Thank goodness our first stopover
in Nice at St. Gothard was only for two nights! Telephoned to confirm early arrival; arrived at agreed time, but room not ready, told to come back at 16:00 (even though 14:00 is the normal check-in); came back and room still not ready. Made for a long, hot day with the bags. I cannot vouch for other rooms in the hotel, but ours on the fourth floor was an absolute travesty. Greeted by a musty/sewery smell and a damp carpet, meaning we had to put our bags on available chairs and tables. Half the lights in the room weren't working; most importantly, that in the toilet/shower-room. (Not exactly safest in the dark to shower after a long day out, especially with a two-foot drop from a wobbly shower floor down to the slick tiling of a cramped toilet!) Told reception, nothing done about any of this the whole time. Had a word with the cleaner in the morning and even she said it's always like that. Sweet. Our other stopovers in Nice were, thankfully, at other two-stars (don't think I'm allowed to name them?), for approx the same price and in roughly the same location; i.e. close to rail station, shopping on Avenue Medecins nearby, 15 mins max walk to waterfront, 15 mins to the Old Quarter. The woman on reception didn't seem to have a clue about our booking, room status, or how to resolve problems during our stay. Leaving bags at the desk for the day of departure cost 3 euros a bag, whereas other hotels are free. There are plenty of hotels in Nice for around 35-45 quid/night that are much, much better. After comparisons with our other later stays in Nice, we found St. Gothard to be an unpleasant anomaly. Despite all the positive reviews here, I'd urge other travellers to consider alternatives carefully, given the glut of choices available. Spending an extra 2-3 quid per night for a place can be a real saving grace!

Saint Gothard Hotel
27 July 2007
For a 2 star Hotel very good value with lots of plus points particularly good for me was the air conditioning - also hair dryer and satellite TV. Room was simply but adequately furnished - (tiles in the bathroom were a bit 'loud' and not cleaned vey often above eye level but a minor detail). Close to railway station and 99 bus from the airport stops there too. Buses are every 15 minutes and well worth 4 euros as tickets can be used on any local bus for the rest of the day. Great if you arrive in the morning as we did. Beach is probably a good 10 minute walk away but lots of shops to look at on the way, not to mention bars/cafe's etc. Lots of atmosphere in the local area - worth a visit.

Great value for money
21 July 2007
We have just come back from St Gothard ( july 2007 ) and it was excellent value for money. Close to the train station and bus stop for the airport ( MUCH cheaper than the taxi's ) there was a hairdryer in the bedroom with TV, en-suite. The view was a bit naff but you dont spend all holiday looking out of the window !!! The breakfast was what you would expect for the price, you could have as much tea/coffee/orange as you wished. The only drawback I would say was the fact that the hotel was quite a way from the main restaurants and street entertainment and the old quaters BUT you cant have everything !!! and the stroll down to these places was interesting. I would say the Gothard was very good value for the money and the staff were VERY friendly and VERY helpful and you could even have your breakfast in your room if you so wished !! I would stay in this hotel again.

great hotel for the price
20 July 2007
Just returned from staying in this hotel ( july 2007) we found it very handy ( close to railway and bus stop for the air port..... MUCH cheaper than taxi's) the staff are very very helpful and friendly, there is a lift to all floors, a machine in the loby that sells sweets and cold drinks, something that came in VERY handy. You could have your breakfast in your room or in the dining hall. The breakfast was simple but very nice, what you would expect for the price, you could also have more tea/coffee/orange. I wouldnt hesitate in staying at this hotel again in the future. There are also bars and restaurants nearby BUT I have to say that we found the bars/restaurants near the sea front more interesting.

Review of 'SAINT GOTHARD'
31 March 2007
Close to railway station and terminus of airport bus. Friendly staff. Room quite small and shower, in particular, cramped. Room appeared smoky on arrival - perhaps staff were aware as window was open! Breakfast was a typically inclusive price French one - but adequate. Were warned about the dangers of that area but didn't experience any problems - perhaps because we're old and don't stay out late! Didn't use local restaurants but were perfectly happy with the selection in rue de France - near the front. One reviewer commented on the dark stairs - perhaps she didn't try putting on the lights! For the price this place is convenient and good value.

Review of 'SAINT GOTHARD'
15 October 2006
Typical condition of a two star hotel but great location for a stop over. The station is 5 minutes north along with the bus 99 express to the airport which starts running at 8:00 a.m. We however needed to be at the airport at 9:30 a.m. so the bus 23 at exactly the same stop as the 99 starts running at at 5:00 a.m. There are numerous restaurants surrounding the hotel including Chinese and a huge supermarket Monoprix 10 minutes [with hot food]for people like me that can't read a French menu.

Review of 'SAINT GOTHARD'
08 May 2006
The Saint Gothard is a small, inexpensive, friendly hotel set in the heart of old Nice. The rooms are clean and comfortable and there is someone in reception to greet you whatever time of day or night you arrive. It is only two minutes walk from Nice Station, from where trains go to Monaco and Italy as well as all over France. Both Monte Carlo and Ventimiglia are an easy day trip and there are exquisite places along the Cote D'Azur in both directions that shouldn't be missed. Buses from outside the station go directly to the airport every half hour or, if you have a very early or late flight, the hotel will organise you a cab at less than the usual exorbitant rate charged by the Nice taxi drivers. After a plentiful breakfast in the hotel, you can stroll through the shopping streets to the beach or lose yourself in the markets and marinas. You can buy or not. There is something for every pocket, and you cannot help admiring Nice's architecture along the way. You will never be far from food or drink and, if your feet are tired, you can always get a bus back to the station. In the evening, you can enjoy a meal in one of the many restaurants in the immediate area of the hotel. You will find restaurants from all over the world as well as French and Italian. We found an excellent Korean Restaurant and an Indian worth a second visit. Rare in France! All in all, I have stayed in hotels costing twice as much and not received such good service and friendly help and advice as in the Saint Gothard. Whether you are just staying overnight to catch a train or plane or aiming to enjoy the sights and sounds of Nice and the surrounding area, I am happy to recommend a stay in this hotel.
