When we first arrived at the Royal Hotel, we were a little disappointed. It was a 3 Star but seemed a lot more than 1 star different from previous 4 Star hotels that we had stayed in. We arrived on New Years Eve and left 4 courses in to the 7 course Gala Dinner. The food was very basic and we were the only English couple amongst a room full of Spanish pensioners (we are 36 and 42 years old). However, having said that, it seemed to improve from there. The hotel was very clean, if a little dated, but the central position (right between the new town and the old town) was excellent. The position also meant that we had the sun on our balcony from 8am right throughout the morning. The buffet meals were of a far better standard than the gala meal had been and there was plenty of choice. This got better as they closed their kitchen 2 days into the break due to low numbers of guests and sent us over to the 4 Star Hotel Victoria to eat for the remainder of the holiday.
If you are looking for a central base which is cheap and clean, from which to enjoy your holiday, then the Royal is the place to be. If you are looking for a hotel to spend your whole holiday in, I would suggest that you may want somewhere a little more modern, with more English people in and some English entertainment - the Royal has neither of these. That said, I would return as it was excellent value for money.
