Review of 'PLAKA'
13 April 2007
Situated in the heart of the Plaka district, the hotel is about 3 or 4 minutes walk from Monastiraki Metro station which is the terminus for the airport link. Restaurants and shops are literally on the doorstep, and most of the surrounding area is pedestrianised.
The hotel was refurbished in 2001. The rooms are decorated in light colours with wood floors, and cleanliness is of a very high standard. All the usual facilities are provided although the rooms might be described as 'bijou', and the bathrooms might have been designed by a marine architect. Nevertheless it was all pefectly adequate. But.......the view from our room was stunning! We went to bed looking at an uninterrupted view of the Acropolis with the floodlit Parthenon, and woke up to see it all bathed in the red glow of sunrise. Our (5th floor)room was not overlooked so we were able to keep the curtains drawn back all the time. Friends who travelled with us were not quite as fortunate, and had to stand on their balcony to enjoy the view.
There is a sizeable roof garden, set with tables and chairs and a few sun-loungers, and a small bar which is open during the summmer season. The views are superb.
Breakfasts are typically Athenian with a buffet selection of hot and cold fare, and no restriction on how much you can eat.
Despite its location, the hotel was surprisingly quiet. We were unaware of any intrusive noise either from outside or from adjacent rooms.
As we had visited Athens before we took more trouble in choosing a hotel for its location and facilities as well as cost, and the Plaka certainly did not let us down on any of these counts. I think we would have paid the money for the view alone!
