Review of 'Miramar'

22 January 2007
We stayed at the Miramar in Jan 2007.  It is set in lovely green surroundings and is a pleasant, clean and spacious hotel and staff are friendly (and v. good English speakers).

Disappointingly, our room was without a great sea or mountain view but we did have a large 'yard' with table, chairs and sun lounger through the patio doors.  Our only niggles with the room were the noisy plastic sheets on the mattresses and the oddly placed bidet in the bathroom which we practically had to clamber over to get to the loo!  Also, the corridors are rather echoey so you knew as soon as your neighbours were up and about in the morning!

The majority of the guests were more mature in age, so I think the entertainment catered for their tastes.  We chose to go into town for dinner and entertainment.  The walk down to the centre of Puerto de la Cruz through the gardens can be done in about 10 minutes if you are quick on the steps - it usually took us a bit longer on the way up - especially as you can't help but stop to look at the spectacular view over the town.  If you can't face the walk there is a somewhat rickety free hotel minibus that goes to the shopping centre in town and back about every hour.

Breakfast wasn't brilliant but there was a wide choice of toast, eggs and bacon, cereals, bread and jam etc.  You must checkout of your room at 12 noon, but there is a lockable room where you can leave your bags if you need to.

Review of Miramar Hotel

We were a little apprehensive about puerto de la cruz at first, people said it was cloudy there. There is nothing to worry about,we had fabulous weather. We travelled there on the 21st of March 2006,we stayed at the Miramar Hotel. The hotel is very clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly, and the pool area is quiet and relaxing. The food is good, but it could be a little more varied, but saying that the salad bar is excellent. The rooms are huge,we had a great sea view.We were in room 901.We would stay there again, but when are these hotels going to start selling bitter instead of that Dorada lager.HA HA

Review of 'MIRAMAR'

This old hotel was one of the first to be built in the town of Puerto de la Cruz (in the North) on the island of Tenerife, back in the 60's. It is located in the wealthy area of Parque san fernando, on the edge of the Taoro Park set above the main town centre and away from the noise and pollution that you get nowadays- that is why I chose the hotel. You can sleep well at night there...

So the hotel is still family run and after speaking to various people working there, there are waiters, staff and cleaners who have been there over 30 years now! Even though it has about 120 rooms, all with en-suite bathroom, it still feels like a large guest house.

Most of the clientelle were around 50 in age, and were from Germany, UK and mainland Spain. I only saw one child there during the week, but it was school time.

The flooring in most parts is polished marble, and all the rooms have very high ceilings, considered luxurious back in the 60's. The place is a bit tired, although it looks like an attempt was made at modernising it. To say that it is run down would not be right- its just old. There are still big old key fobs- no card swipe locks, and the facilities there are just the basic essentials- but who spends their whole day in their hotel room when they are on holiday? There are no TV's in the rooms, but there is a phone- no internet connection available from the rooms (there is a pay as you go terminal next to the reception).

The hotel must have been a very luxurious place when it first opened. The gardens and poolside area are very nice, and the heated pool is a reasonable size.

The food served is buffet style, with at least two choices of hot dish served at every meal. The food quality is reasonable given how much we paid, and I would say is actually very tasty. Most dishes are catered for German and UK taste, although one meal in the week's stay was typically canarian and wa8s just superb. More please... Non alcoholic drinks accompanying the meals were not free and were about twice the price of the local supermarket. You can drink the local tap water there (I did without any probs), although it is heavily chlorinated- presumably to kill everything except me!). Half board meal times- 07.30 to 10.00 and 18.30 to 21.30 with full waiter service.

The hotel is not in the thick of the town, so you do8 have to walk down to the seafront (and back up the steep hill- not brilliant for unfit people),

spacious well presented rooms, spectacular views of mt teide from large balcony. very pleasant and helpfull staff. Food average but would have liked to see more local dishes presented and less chips. Entertainment mediocre but plenty of good hotels in walking distance offering good and varied entertainment. Hotel is set on a hill quite steep but offers a coach down into town free. Jogging park right next to hotel. All arears in hotel carpeted so cuts out noise on hallways and stairs. We had a very pleasant 7 days stay so much so that we are planning a 14 day visit in September 2005.
