One Night Stayh

23 August 2008
Only stayed one night but very happy and would definately recommend this hotel. It is well located, modern and clean and provides an excellent breakfast. The rooms were minimalist but comfortable and spacious. I could only find one thing to moan about and that was that the shower was too powerful! You could barely stand under it. The reception staff were helpful and were happy to keep our bag for the full day after we checked out as our train wasn't until the evening.

Nice Hotel

20 August 2008
Just stayed one night at this hotel on a short break for the fringe. Was given a double room when we were two female travelers so complained to reception. Staff were really great and a young man took me to another room to see if I liked it. Really nice room with a leather settee, plasma tv, lovely white linen bedding on very comfortable beds. Double glazed windows and a funky black glass sliding shutter instead of curtains. Didn't like the corridors, the dark colours and coloured strip lighting on walls were a bit seedy. Breakfast was lovely with certain things made to order. Would stop there again

Fringe visitors

19 August 2008
Expensive because of the Fringe, but would recommend, and will probably stay again next year. Strikingly modern style, very comfy large room. Bathroom let our stay down, but apparently in the middle of refurbishment program for bathrooms. We had one major problem with ours, but when reported, staff went out of their way to resolve, and one of the Managers, i believe his name was Steve, deserves a special mention. Very nice dinner in the evening, and good breakfast

Review of our stay at Mecure Point

17 August 2008
My friend and I stayed at the Mecure Point for 4 nights. We were extremely satisfied with the service we recieved during our stay. All staff were very hospitable and friendly and made us feel very welcome. We ate in the restaurant on two nights and the Food was excellent, breakfasts were also good with plenty of choice. The adjoining bar was worth a visit too. Excellent location with a good view of the castle, the hotel itself is laid out well and makes good use of minimalism in its decoration. The only improvement point I can think of is that one day we returned and had not been provided with a new set of teabags! Aah! :)

11 August 2008
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Point. Proximity to Edinburgh Castle was a big plus (5-10 minute walk) so there was no hassle getting to the Tattoo. Hotel staff extremely helpful and pleasant, room clean and very quiet, buffet breakfast very good indeed. Would certainly book again.

4 nights at Mercure Point

13 July 2008
Good points: very comfortable room - huge bed, sofa, good wardrobe space; well cleaned daily; staff helpful and pleasant. Points for improvement: could usefully supply shower caps - almost impossible to use shower without washing your hair; handrails over bath needed; front entry doors are large and heavy - suggest they could install power-assist - I sat in foyer one morning and watched everyone struggle in/out with luggage. Meals ok - but when we were there it was the same menu every night. Overall: a good place to stay - would recommend it.

OK for the reduced rate we paid

27 May 2008
In mid-May we paid £87 including breakfast so was a good price for only-just-out-of-centre accommodation. As others have said, the interior design in the corridors is striking, dark matt walls with strips of light. The first room we were given was grubby. They said it was refurbished, but it had painted matt grey walls which looked marked and single glazed windows which rattled, and didn’t keep out the street noise. They said it had a castle view, which it did if you looked over the sex shop, derelict bookies and boarded up shops. Luckily it was a twin room and we’d booked a double so they moved us to the 4th floor. A much nicer white-painted room, with double glazing and a proper view up to the castle with no seedy shops to look at! The huge bed turned out to be two single beds joined together with bedding across both of them which I’m fine with. However the mattresses were quite worn, with a bit of a ‘dip’ in the middle. The bedroom was clean, and the bedding white and clean. The bathroom was very clean, except the grouting which was a bit mouldy and black between the tiles near the bath, but I told reception about it when we checked out and they were very pleasant and wrote down the room number and said they’d sort it out. At breakfast we were shown to a table that hadn’t been cleaned, and was set with a soup spoon for the cereal. Breakfast is not cooked to order, so the scrambled eggs were quite hard as they’d sat under the heat for some time (I expect early breakfasters would get nicer food though!). They had a good choice of bread, croissants, fresh fruit salad and cereals. The staff seemed nice, we didn’t really see much of them as we were just there one night. There were enough niggles for me not to think this was a great hotel. Even touches like proper cloth tablecloths instead of the disposable ones on the breakfast tables would help. But it wasn’t terrible, and we paid a good price for the time of year.

Our stay

18 April 2008
Just returned from our honeymoon in Edinburgh; we stayed three nights at the point. Location is fantastic, everything in city centre easily walkable. We were upgraded on arrival to a superior room as we were honeymooning, view of castle/city chimney pots/distant mountains exceptional. Room superb, bed larger than our spare room so couldn't take home with us. Shower, shall we be kind and say "intense" - perhaps the only thing we could find fault with. Staff polite, breakfast great. Bar a little pretentious for our tastes so we just went to the pub instead. Would definitely return to stay at The Point, helped make a special break even better.

Fantastic hotel. Very easy to find and has a great location for everything you could possible want to do in Edinburgh. The food is good, I especially recommend an evening meal in their restaurant (get the steak its the best I've ever had). The rooms are of a good size and the views of the castle are not to be missed. The staff are all very helpful and the bar staff are very knowledable. I cannot speak highly enough of this hotel. and will definitely be returning

Me and my boyfriend really enjoyed our stay at the Point Hotel. We found it quite hard to find when we first got there, but got there eventually! The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was great. Although the shower was very powerful and it felt like we were being shot at! (also, the radiator burnt my leg as it was so close to the toilet!) Breakfast was lovely! We will definitely stay there again. Also, nice flapjacks! :D

Bought as a birthday surprise

17 March 2008
Bought my parents a surprise break as a birthday treat. I was expecting them to love it as the hotel sounds fantastic. In reality they said it was a bit threadbare in places and had black insulating tape holding down bits of the carpet in the corridors!! They also said their hotel room had broken, grubby tiles!!! What a disappointment, apart from that they said it was nice and the breakfast good. I would never pay full price for a trip to this hotel.

15 January 2008
Contemporary decor, spacious room, good location, quiet yet only 10 minutes walk from Princes Street. Staff very friendly and helpful. Delicious breakfast included. Only criticism was that the shower was too powerful and the control was difficult to access once turned on and belting out cold water. Would definitely recommend to young or old and would staty there again. We had a first floor room with a view of the castle but didn't find it at all noisy, in fact we slept in till 10.15 on Sunday morning! Luckily breakfast is till 11!

I have visited this hotel before and would thoroughly recommend it to any disabled person. Staff are brilliant & helpful. Room facilities are excellent, though the room we had had just been upgraded we suggested that there is poor lighting inthe shower part and needs some grab rails, the staff said they would take that on board. We took a 3 night mid-week break and needed a Hotel close to the Castle for the Military Tattoo, and you can't get much closer.Transfer from the airport is less than 1/2 hour and most places of interest are within walking distance. The decor is minimalist, but it works. All the staff were friendly and helpful and everywhere was clean and tidy. The buffet breakfast was superb as were the evening meals which were restaurant quality at bistro prices! We would stay again.

Straight to the Point...

03 June 2007
We travelled to Edinburgh for my Husband to run the marathon and wanted a hotel close to the start on Princes Street. We found ourselves about a 10 minute walk from there which was fine and would work just as well for any other tourists- the shops are all on or around this street, so you don't have to be going for a massive run!! Our room was a decent sized family room, not particularly fancy but clean, tidy and with all the necessary gear. The cot was in the room for our youngest, as requested and made up with cosy bedding. The room was on the first floor and a little noisey on the saturday night as there are plenty of bars nearby. Breakfast was good, they were very accomodating with the children and also with my husbands request for porridge pre-race!! The staff made this stay for me. They were most helpful where ever they could be and are even posting back the doll our 3 year old left behind!

Not what I expected!

21 May 2007
We stayed here for just the one night, friendly staff and you get a really good breakfast. The location is quite good, but we were on the first floor over the bar which was a nightmare. Didn't get any sleep two pubs across the road, so don't get a room over the bar at the front. Room could do with a new mattress, massive dip in the middle and a new hairdryer that never worked. Glad we only stayed a night expected a bit more.

We had an excellent stay at the Point.  All staff were very helpful and friendly.  The rooms are very modern, spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable.  The breakfast buffet was exceptional with so much choice.  It is also just a short walk from Princes Street.  Our only disappointment was that there is no parking facility.  You have a choice of two local NCP car parks with a 20% guest discount. We've just returned from a Xmas shopping week to Edinburgh. We stayed at The Point Hotel and were very pleased with our accommodation. The hotel is very stylish. Our double room was lovely, a very large refurbished room with a giant double bed and plasma screen tv (401) We were very impressed. I was a bit worried about booking The Point after reading some bad reivews on the hotel but we didnt have any complaints. We were advised to ask for a room on the 3rd or 4th floor which we did.
The hotel is ideally situated near all amenities and there are a few pubs nearby. The hotel bar was ok, an upmarket wine bar type.
The only thing we think could be improved was the breakfast, we paid an extra £10 to get ours in bed and when it came it was luke warm and the coffee was cold. We ate in the restaurant on the Saturday night, we had a 3course meal for £19 each which was superb! Great value! Would defo recommend the hotel and we will be staying there again sometime in the future!

Review of 'POINT'

13 November 2006
When I had read the mixed reviews on the Point I went with eyes open to the possibility of the hotel being a dissapointment. However I think it was a great hotel, location wise. Really  easy to get to. The receptionists were very helpful and recommended places to eat and go out, with the result that we had a great two nights in Georges Street. The twin room had lovely views of the castle, though I'm sure some rooms have a bad view, but thats the chance you take and as I got a great deal through Alpah rooms I felt happy with the room. I can see how the hotel design is not to everyones taste. The downstairs restaurant and bar are great and the breakfast was really good (great scrambled eggs!) the waiters could do with being more welcoming in the morning, a smile costs nothing!
The bar was good vib.
I think upstairs, the large open foyers look a bit like a student building, very open and industrial. The rooms are therefore, small but with high ceilings. The one crticism is that the bathrooms are cheaply done and are showing wear and tear with some mouldy curtains and tiles.
The beds are a bit soft but comfy.

All in all I would recommend this hotel. As I apid only £39 per night I felt I got a great deal, I may have felt it was overpriced if I paid the standard rate (approx £120 per night)

I would however recommend the place. The rooms are clean, basic, suits the early 50's 60's aged retired architect types or the 30+ hip graphic designer who wants to look cool without the big price tag!

The Point in Edinburgh

16 October 2006
Good hotel, very central and easy to reach popular attractions. Initial welcome at 1030am in reception good, although when we returned at 12noon (the time stipulated to return), we were told to come back at 2pm. Room pleasant but overlooked by offices and needed blinds/nets for privacy during daytime. Bathroom needed an update but plenty of hot water - instantly and good large fluffy bathtowels. Noisy at night as no double glazing and we could hear the revellers leaving a nearby club around 2am. Hotel itself very quiet at night, clean and spacious. Restaurant wonderful, very good service, tasty food, and lovely surroundings. Restaurant manager very helpful and chatty, very relaxing meal. Bar lovely, lunch very reasonable price and wide choice. Lively atmosphere in the evening but nothing uncontrolled. No problem about leaving luggage all day on the day we returned home. Would return.
