Top notch

19 July 2008
I stayed in the Hacienda Puerta Del Sol on a business trip because I found it online and it fulfilled all of my requirements. It had parking, free wireless broadband and appeared to be very good value. I was not disappointed. 2 weeks later I returned with my family for a holiday. The Hotel is 5 star in every respect except for the one missing star. I can only assume the one missing star is due to the slight lack of attention to detail in the décor. That is not to say the décor is not pleasing but it is slightly rough around the edges. The accommodation is generally excellent, as is the food. It is important to book in half board as it is such great value. There is a lovely pool area with a nice kids pool. Staff are excellent and in general speak good English. The rooms all have aircon. The hotel is located a short drive from Fuengirola and the beautiful village of Mijas. As regards value for money and a great experience I cant recommend it enough.

fantastic value

We stayed at this hotel for four days to go to a wedding in Mijas and then go on up along the coast to our place in alicante .we found hard to leave the hotel allthough only used as a base orginally we found it quite relaxing and a real chillout .might not suit young people looking for the buzz . this hotel would suit mature people and people with young children .Very clean ,plenty to eat ,and in between old and new spain , walking up through the narrow streets of mijas that have nt changed for hundreds of years and then you can go to the coast for the nightlife our shopping.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights to finish off our holiday. Unfortunately the hotel did not give us any advice with regards to the meal arrangements or facilities. This was dissapointing as the first night was a Saturday and the hotel was very busy, we were not expecting a help yourself type resturant in a four star hotel, normally you have a choice between help yourself and waitered service? Once we got over the shock and then sussed out that you just have to join the rugby match to get your food it was not too bad, the food was of reasonable standard and also plenty of it. The beds were well used and a little uncomfortable with only one pillow, even when we propped the pillows using spare blankets the maid did not leave any extra?! The rooms were very good and the only english cannel was BBC world service, there seemed to be many channels for all other nationalities? The pool did get busy, and there was towels on the sunbeds from dawn!! So you had to be quick and get in there first other wise you were relegated to a towel on the lawn. The staff were friendly and the hotel was plesent occupied with a good mix of travellers some that thought they were a cut above the rest, however how many four star hotels operate a meal time feeding frenzy where you dive in and fill your face with as much food as you can as if it was the last time you were going to see food, umm quality!? I have been a bit hard with this review but I do think that if you are rated as a four star in order to improve, honest reviews should be encouraged and welcombed by the owners. I would use the hotel again as it was a nice hotel to stay far enough away from the coast but still with in easy reach by bus or car.

Excellent hotel & staff

22 September 2007
We stayed at the hotel for 10 days half board. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, some spoke limited English, but we felt this added to the charm of the place and made us feel we were in the real Spain and not a Brits abroad tourist hotel. Most of the guests were British or Spanish and there wasn't too much of the "towels on sunbeds at dawn" that you can suffer from, in fact there were generally sunbeds available at most times of day around what was the real Jewel in the Crown, the huge pool. There was always plenty of room in the pool to relax or play and it and the toddlers pool were supervised well during the daytime. Children were kept reasonably well entertained with various games and activities during most of the days if required and the mini-golf and tennis courts were free to use subject to a small deposit for equipment. The food was generally excellent, it was served buffet style, breakfast was especially good, plenty of cereals, fruit, breads, and a hot selection of traditional English Breakfast goodies, even the bacon was up to our standards. The evening meals were a bit more hit and miss, there was plenty of delicious salads etc for starters but the main courses took a bit of guesswork as they were not always identifable and even the staff had to go into the kitchen for some help, that said, once you knew what was on your plate it was usually enjoyable. If you were a dessert person, the trick was to eat early, as the popular puddings ran out fairly quickly. The rooms were quite spacious, we had a family room (double bed, pull out bed and a sofa/bed) the maid service was excellent, cleaned & tidied every day. There was the tiniest fridge imaginable hidden in the cupboard, but we managed to cope. The hotel lobby and restaurant areas were lovely, air conditioned & spotlessly clean. We hired a car for the duration of our visit and found this to be a big advantage as the Hotel is a little remote, and it enabled us to go into Fuengirola or Mijas and to other attractions as & when we pleased although we spoke with other people who used the bus service and found that to be quite adequate. All in all we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and will definately return, if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing break with a bit of luxury at a very reasonable price, I don't think you could beat this place.

Great for a relaxing break

17 September 2007
We stayed for a veg out weekend in mid-september . Catching the train to Fuengirola from the airport and then a bus up the hill is the cheapest way but it takes around an hour and a half as they don't seem to connect. Rooms was fine with a nice bathroom - ours overlooked the front of the hotel and the hills. Buffet breakfast and dinner were ok for the inclusive price. The best bit about the hotel is the pool and relaxing outside area. We spent the days there and the evening in Mijas which is touristy but has some nice restaurants. We went to Fuengirola one night and hated it, costa del sol at its worst. Staff were friendly, pool towels are available for a deposit. Other guests appeared to be mainly elderly brits with a smattering of germans and spanish. Overall this hotel is excellent value for money and spotlessly clean. Relying on the bus is fine for a couple of days but any longer and you'd need a car.

Do yourself a favour - stay here - it's great!

07 September 2007
We arrived on the 27th of August after catching the train from Malaga Airport (about 1 pound fifty each!) and then sharing a cab from Fuengirola (7 pounds) half way upto Mijas where the hotel is located. Be warned, there is nothing in the way of shops near the hotel and it can get a bit pricey (2.50 euros for a small coffee, 3.50 euros for a large bottle of water etc. plus inflated prices on food) so get yourself a few bits for the fridge in your room from a supermarket in Fuengirola or Mijas and you'll save a fare few quid. The hotel is possibly the most relaxing I have stayed at on my many travels and is clearly a 4 star property. The hotel is clean and spacious as are the rooms. Breakfast was as good as any I have had at other continental hotels and the staff were helpful and pleasant enough. There is a bus every half hour in each direction (up to Mijas and down to Fuengirola) and it costs 73p or 1.05 euros!!! I would recommend this for those looking for a quiet, relaxing break and will deffinately be staying here again in the future. The only thing missing was a little entertainment in the evenings but this is a small issue as you can find plenty in Fuengirola and Mijas. Whatever you do, make sure you go for a meal in Mijas Pueblo and if you get a chance, venture to Benalmadena Pueblo. They are both beautiful, old spanish villages and charming is not a word that adequately describes them. Happy holidays!

Can't Wait to Return

28 June 2007
Wow, just returned from a 4 day stay at this fabulous hotel and what a brilliant break it was. It was my second visit here to this beautiful location. Don't know where to begin, 4 days of total relaxation and bliss. We arrived at the hotel on Monday and didn't leave until our departure back to the airport on Thursday! We sat by the pool, totally relaxed (what we had come for) and swam in the fabulous pool, and read 2 books. There was no need to leave the hotel as we had everything there we wanted, most of all sun and beautiful surrounds, great food (we stayed half-board and would recommend this) and lovely welcoming staff. The hotel is spotless and can’t be faulted. Breakfast – there was something for everyone, cereals, fresh fruit and eggs, bacon, sausage, etc, and plenty of fruit juices, coffee, tea etc. Our first night of dinner was waiter service which consisted of a fabulous 3 course dinner washed down with a nice Riocca The next two nights was a hot buffet with a good selection of meats, salads, soup, desserts etc . Can't wait until my next visit, and I almost reluctant to leave this review, as I don't really want too many people knowing just what a fabulous hotel this really is!!

Really nice hotel

01 May 2007
Couldnt really fault this hotel at all. Friendly English speaking staff, lovely views from the rooms. Fantastic view of the sea from the terrace. They have free wifi internet access but you have to be on the ground floor to get the signal. Its location is OK but you'll need a car to get to fuengirola. Although I did notice a bus stop which a bus runs from fuengirola up to Mijas. Mijas is also a lovely village which is worth a trip. Plenty of car parking spaces at the hotel, whch are even shaded from the sun. Took breakfast a few times but never had an evenig meal there as I stayed alone.

Have stayed at this hotel 4 times; Winter, Spring and Autumn and Christmas. Each time the staff have been wonderful. The food is good.
Prices via Alpharooms have always been good.
The hotel was a little dated and we look forward to visiting the refurbished hotel in 2007. and of seeing the staff agains.
The setting is ideal twixt Mijas and Fuerengola.

Review of 'CLUB PUERTA DEL SOL'

07 August 2006
This is the third time we have stayed at Club Puerta Del Sol. We like it because of its relaxing out of the way setting but with very quick access to really nice restaurants in Mijas village and you are only 15mins drive from the port area of Belamadina. The hotel have spent a great deal of money renovating both the rooms which look great and the outdoor area around the pool and have done a brilliant job. The only thing that lets them down is the service in the bar area which is slow, understaffed and fairly unfriendly which is a shame given the money they have spent on the hotel itself. Having said that it would not stop me going back. I would highly recommend a trip to Bellini's which is an Italian restaurant 1 min drive away (or 10 mins walk if you can manage the steep uphill return journey). It is one of the best I have been to in years but book to avoid disapointment

Review of 'CLUB PUERTA DEL SOL'

19 June 2006
I spend a week at this hotel each year and have just returned from a slightly earlier break this time in June.
The hotel is undergoing refurbishment and I was fortunate to have a 2nd floor room which had just been finished.  The new shower units and flooring are excellent and the corridor lighting and flooring is much brighter.

The only criticism at the moment is the lack of shade as several of the parasols on the far side of the pool have been removed whilst the new patio levels are developed.  This has made a marvellous area for looking across at the wonderful views.

Although the hotel is "out of the way" slightly, the local bus service to Mijas and Fuengirola is excellent, night and day.  There is also a free minibus service both ways.

I look forward to next year.

If you don't like the busy costas and want to relax in a pleasant hotel with an excellent pool then you should try this hotel. It is actually quite a beautiful building with fantastic views over the coast and the mountains of Mijas. The rooms are basic although they are getting upgraded (slowly)and the staff were always helpful. 15 mins from airport, 5 mins from Mijas makes it an excellent location too.

19 November 2005
Lovely location, facade grounds leisure facilities, reception definitely 4*. However stairs and corridors to rooms 2*, carpets very dirty. Rooms clean but very basic and worn.(Before we left in November all the outside furniture had been replaced with new.) Breakfast excellent, evening meal expensive and bland with mushy veg. Places we would recommend to eat in the area are Bellinis Italian, not far from hotel, Molinos half way to Mijas, El Puerto in Mijas. Going back in January, will check out more places. We are told the hotel will have had an interior face lift.

08 October 2005
Just got back after relaxing holiday. Hotel very good value for money, clean and tidy everywhere. Rooms basic, but a good size and with ensuite and a/c. Buffet breakfast offers good choice of hot and cold, english/continental.

Pool area spacious, plenty of beds and mattresses available, although not an olympic sized pool as mentioned by some.  Also two tennis courts, mini golf and a gym. All of the staff very helpful, and all we met spoke english.

A car is useful as you are 2-3km from Mijas and 4-5km from Fuengirola, but there are bus stops right outside hotel. Most of the guests staying there were 35+ couples or on coach tours. Well located hotel for exploring local area, would return.

Review of 'CLUB PUERTA DEL SOL'

07 October 2005
The hotel was situated on the road between Fuengirola and Mijas with not much in the area therefore you need to get the regular buses or hire a car.  The hotel was clean but is in need of updating.  The air conditioning was not very effective you have to keep it on constantly to gain any effect despite a fairly small room!  The resturant Valparasio just down the road is a must but quite expensive.  The reception staff were excellent but bar staff were not very good and the prices of food and drink quite expensive.  We would class the hotel as a 3 star although on a plus point it was not too busy and you are not fighting for sunbeds.

Hotel was clean well kept, breakfast buffet was good with a reasonable variety of English and continental. The evening buffet had a reasonable chioce and on the whole was hot. Some new staff appeared during our stay and i would say they still needed more! The pool and free sunbeds (with mattresses) were a welcome bonus and not in short supply, no towels out in the morning (none of our european neighbours!!)
We all enjoyed our stay and we will return in the future.

EXTREMELY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY, THE HOTEL RECEPTION AREA WAS VERY CLEAN WITH LOTS OF SEATING AND IMMACULATE MARBLE FLOORS. THE ROOMS, ALTHOUGH WELL USED AND BASIC, WERE CLEAN, WITH AN EXCELLENT MAID SERVICE.  THE BAR WAS REASONABLY PRICED WITH LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN THE EVENINGS ON THE OUTSIDE TERRACE.  THE POOL, WAS AN OLYMPIC SIZE POOL AND WAS VERY CLEAN WITH A LIFE GUARD PRESENT.  THE HOTEL IS IDEAL FOR PEOPLE WITH CHILDREN, AS THEY CAN PLAY IN THE PLAYGROUND, MINIGOLF OR TENNIS COURTS SAFELY WITHIN THE HOTEL GROUNDS.  THERE WAS A WIDE CHOICE FOR BREAKFAST, INCLUDING FULL ENGLISH, CONTINENTAL OR FRUIT.  THE STAFF WERE VERY PLEASANT AND ALL IN ALL IT WAS A VERY ENJOYABLE STAY.  MIJAS IS A BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE WITH PLENTY OF GOOD QUALITY RESTAURANTS, AND PLENTY OF THINGS FOR THE CHILDREN - DONKEY RIDES AND HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES ETC.

Don't eat in the restaurant.

22 July 2005
No complaints with the hotel, staff very friendly and spoke pretty good English. Bar prices were very expensive. Breakfast was adequate with a reasonable choice of continental and english breakfast. Our only complaint was the evening buffet, choice was very limited and not very appetising, every HOT dish we choose was cold, even though the soup was in an electric WARMER as well as the main meals. It was also very expensive, the sort of prices you would expect to pay in a reasonable restaurant. Give the evening meal a miss and try one of the other restaurants in the area. We went to Mollina's, a short driver up the hill towards Mijas, a beautiful restaurant serving Cantonese and Indonesian food, excellent and cheaper than the hotel, the waiters were also very curteous.

Rooms are spacious with good ensuite, phone and TV - only English language station is Sky News. Daily cleaning and replacement of towels etc was excellent. Beds were a little hard.
Bar and Restaurant staff were friendly, helpful and had adequate English.
Good choice of food for breakfast in clean restaurant including outdoor seating.
Dinner was adequate if unexciting fare.
Reception staff were help[ful and were able to converse adequately in English.
The hotel has an excellent pool and surround and except for weekends when there is an influx of local holidaymakers there was no problem getting comfortable spaces poolside.
There are bus-stops for Fuengirola and Mijas just at the entrance to the hotel and the excellent and on-time buses are an excellent way to travel.
Overall a bright, cheerful, well-located hotel which is excellent value for money.

Review of 'CLUB PUERTA DEL SOL'

13 June 2005
Third time back. For car-renters this is a no-brainer: one-third to half the price of similar accommodation 5 mins down the road in Fuengirola, unbeatable setting (2 mins from Mijas Puebla)and never too full.

Rather than continuously investing in upgrades, it seems Club Puerta del Sol has focussed on maintenance over the years, resulting in a clean, if a little spartan and dated, overall impression.

This hotel is unclear about who it wants to be: awful music (croner and synthesiser) laid on occasionally in the foyer; perfectly manicured - though never used - crazy-golf course and fawlty-towers staffed recepiton and bar somehow mix with an elegant - and large - pool and surround; 2 recently surfaced hard tennis courts and a brand spanking new Bentley parked outside the front door half the time. Got the impression changes are imminent: lots of important-looking people waltzing around with clip-boards and floor-plans.

The accommodation itself is cheap as chips but bar and food prices have been creeping up pretty rapidly - EUR19 for the buffet - go to one of the 5 or 6 restaurants on the same road instead - and, I think, EUR3.50 for a large (500ml) beer.
