Madrid overview

Madrid
The capital and largest city in Spain, Madrid has a fascinating history, unique culture and vibrant nightlife. Summers in Madrid are hot, with temperatures regularly above 30 degrees making the city a perfect getaway from the UK’s inevitable damp and grey version.

Where to visit….
The Prado Museum houses one of the world’s best collections of European Art. It includes work by Spanish painters; Velazquez, Goya, El Greco and Esteban as well as many other big names from other European countries. Another arty essential is the Reina Sofia Museum, Spain’s national museum of 20th century art featuring work by Picasso, Miro and Dali.
Designed by architect Gomez de Mora, the Plaza Mayor is a beautiful square that has been the site of many a bullfight and execution. Today it is surrounded by shops and bars and features a statue of King Phillip III. The Royal Palace has one of the largest armouries in the world and celebrates the change of the Royal Guard every Wednesday at 11am which is well worth a watch.
If you’re after some space, head out to the Buen Retiro Park at the edge of the city centre. Full of sculpture, monuments, lakes and manicured lawns, the park is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. If you have the kids with you and want to escape the heat in the city, head out to Aquopolis, a large outdoor water park full of slides and pools. Other child-friendly options include the Planetarium, Warner Bros Park and the Zoo Aquarium. Real Madrid FC was founded in 1902 and is Spain’s most successful football team. Their home is the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium where if you’re lucky with your timing you can catch a game.

Shopping!
El Rastro, Europe’s largest outdoor market, is the place to shop on a Sunday morning. You can buy almost anything here on the streets of Barrio La Latina. Xanadu is a shopping centre for the whole family. Containing Europe’s largest indoor ski slope, the multi-level shopping and sports centre offers something for everyone and most importantly during the hot summer months – an air conditioned haven.

See the city…
The Teleferico (cable railway) is a great way to see Madrid – from the air! A tour lasts 11 minutes and offers views of the Rosaleda, the Principe Pio (train station), River Manzanares and Casa de Campo. Walking is the best way to see the city but if your feet begin to tire, hop on to the expanding Madrid Metro, 24 hour buses (perfect for partygoers) and plenty of taxis.

After dark….
Madrid has vibrant nightlife and a wealth of choices to suit any taste. If you’re wanting to celebrity spot, Gabana 1800 is where you’ll find your professional footballers and models alongside an equally exclusive price tag. A lively young crowd can always be found at Fortuny, a restaurant and nightclub housed in a three storey 19th century palace. Kapital is a huge nightclub that spans 7 floors and a rooftop terrace. Here you can dance the night away to Madrid’s local DJ’s.
