The municipality of Portimao in the Algarve is lucky enough to be home to one of the area's most desirable beaches, Praia de Rocha. There is a lot more to do in the area than just sun-bathe, though, with sport fishing, water sports and golf courses all nearby to enjoy. Night-life is easily accessible and quite varied for a moderately sized resort, and is not as intrusive as in some of the larger developments. Although Portimao doesn't have quite as many facilities and attractions of the very large resorts, it does have a more pleasant atmosphere and may be better suited to families with small children or couples seeking a relaxing stay abroad. Although a lot smaller than the large visiting monthly market, souvenirs and clothing are usually on sale each week in the town square market. For all those nature lovers The Rio de Alvor is a must, it is home for many different species of bird, and in the early morning you can sit and watch the local fishermen going about their business by traditional methods.
