The 500 year old city of Funchal is the capital of Madeira and its unique micro climate gives it a warm sunny atmosphere all year round. Bishops Palace is a prime example of Baroque architecture, while the military-style Santiago Fort is home to the Museum of Modern Art and has lovely views overlooking the sea. Surrounded by tall green mountains and deep valleys, Funchal is also a great starting point for discovering the Funchal Ecological Park half way between Monte and Poiso. Here, visitors can walk to two of the highest points in Madeira.
