Review of Hotel Principal, Dublin
11 March 2005
The Principal was in a great location, just round the corner from the Bank of Ireland, Trinity College, Grafton Street, O'Connell Bridge, Molly Malone's statue, and most importantly Temple Bar. It's right on Fleet Street, which then turns into Temple Bar street itself, so it's rather handily placed for all the drinking dens that litter that side of the Liffey.
In the hotel itself the rooms were comfortable and well-maintained, with everything in working order, and although I missed breakfast due to my head feeling like there was a small brass band in it I am assured it was as greasy and tasty as all post-Guinness breakfasts should be. And that leads me neatly onto the pubs and bars of Temple Bar, all of which smell very odd (lots of bleach and stale Guinness) with no smoking permitted, and whilst I'm sure all over-zealous non-smokers will rub their hands with sadistic glee at the thought of the choir imperfect freezing in the rain it did not spoil anything, as tarpaulin and heaters have been used to rather imaginative effect by the publicans, so no one has to suffer. The pubs are expensive in Temple Bar, but Dublin is a capital city and as such expect capital prices, but the craic is great, the girls are indeed pretty in Dublin's fair city, and even the doormen seem jovial, so thankfully you'll be hard pressed to find aggro.
If you're there a while, take a day trip to Howth or Bray, it's bracing Irish seaside so there won't be any fighting over sun loungers, but the air is beautifully fresh and you get to see a little more of real Ireland whilst you're there. Other sites to see are the Guinness brewery, the Joyce trail, and the delightful cloud prodding edifice the Irish built for the Millenium on O'Connell Street (near the General Post Office), and the Liffey is awe-inspiring by night when all of the city lights come on.
All told, a great stay, and the Principal was a fantastic base for everything, and the staff were courteous and willing to assist with any problems we had, not that we had any. I would reccommend it to anyone travelling to Dublin, and may well go back myself upon my next visit to Dublin!
