Not so good Hotel

30 June 2008
Just come back from a weeks stay at the Esmerelda, I was looking forward to this holiday as it is was our first in 2 years. The Hotel is clean the pool is not as clean as I would of expected in a 4 star hotel. The restaurant and reception staff are very rude, bordering on offensive. The food is repetetive and boring, the service in the restaurant is appalling, the tables are not cleaned and you are lucky if there is a knife and fork laid out. The rooms are not bad, ours was a little dusty and had some cobwebs but it was comfortable. All in all I do not rate this as a 4 star hotel and the attitude of the staff made our stay uncomfortable.

A Quality Hotel

18 April 2008
I have been staying at this hotel twice a year for most years since it opened! The staff are most helpfull, the food is good,it is spotlessly clean and the location is great. Those who moan about the food being bland should look again at what they are paying to travel 2000 miles and half board in the hotel! There have been some major road works in recent times but these are finished now. I will be returning to the hotel in May and December (my 30th visit) and I know that I will enjoy my holiday tho I must confess to receiving a little "Special" treatment.

We stayed at the hotel for a week at the end of February. The hotel has a really nice reception area and is spotlessly clean but the bedrooms need refurbishing. The food is O.K as there is always something that you can find to eat, Some of the staff really are ignorant no matter how polite you are to them and they could make more of an effort. Overall I would say this is a good 3 star hotel not a 4. The hotel is in a good position with a lot going on around. Beware of the pests who try to give you free tickets and tell you that you have won a cash prize. They only pick on couples and try to convince you that threy will be able to get you a really cheap holiday. In no time at all they are asking for your date of birth, whether you have internet and/or telephone banking and whether you have debit/credit cards. This is a scam so ignore them and do not get involved in any sort of conversation with them.

Getting Better

31 March 2007
Having initially took a chance on 'Esmeralda' after reading poor reports, found it o.k. I've been there five times now and each time it has improved. Maid service is good, clean towels every day, and clean sheets twice a week, reception staff are very helpful,on the downside, the bar staff are pretty indifferent, also if you are unlucky and get a room furthest away from the 'pool' end, there is an outside generator, which is audible if you are a light sleeper, this kicks in at 0715 a.m. < very handy if you need to be reminded to get up for breakfast > . Food is o.k. but then again, I don't like any Spanish hotel food so maybe I'm biased.

Arrived 14th Dec for 12 nights in Esmerelda returning home 26th. Hotel was very impressive when checking in, lovely xmas decs, lovely reception ares and lounge-bar areas. The rooms were comfy and tv with movie channel in all rooms. We had a lovely pool/sea view, only fault with rooms is I haven't had a bath with hot water in 12 days, its only just warm. The food was ok I guess but that too was not hot! I wouldn't say this was a 4 star hotel, more 3. The entertainment team work hard and try to get things going every day and evening but due to the time of year there were quite a lot of senior citizens in the place and not many of them wanted football! There are a lot of road works right outside the hotel causing a lot of noise and dust, apparently they've been ongoing for around 12 months? A couple of breezy days I could of done with a very hot bath to wash off the muck that blew on me whilst laying round the pool. The weather was very good for most of the stay, xmas day and boxing day been the best, up to around mid 80's. All in all we enjoyed our holiday and it certainly beats queing in Tesco at xmas !!

After reading various reviews of people who stayed in this accommodation recently, we were a bit dubious about staying here.  When we arrived the Hotel staff were more than helpful, and when we were shown to our rooms contrary to others opinions we were more than happy with the accommodation which we had booked.  The pool area was super, the food half board was excellent and general appearance of the hotel was superb.
The entertainment was good.  The location of the hotel was convenient to the main attractions that suited us.  e.g. beach, market, shops and other neighbouring towns.
In closing we must say that we hope to return to this hotel as soon as possible, and can honestly say there was nothing about the hotel that we could give a bad review.
The hotel was brilliant so we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to go there.

Review of 'ESMERALDA PLAYA'

We visited the Esmeralda just before Easter 06. Overbooking caused us to stay in the Iberostar across the road on our first night through no fault of Alpharooms. We should have stayed there.
We found the food selection very poor and did not use our half board basis as a result. The rooms were basic and could probably do with an upgrade. We picked this hotel mainly because of the reviews we read. Unfortunately our experience was not the same at all. We recommend Alpharooms for their good service and having booked with them several times previously we have never been dissapointed. I cannot however recommend the Esmeralda

My husband and I wanted a peaceful break away and the Esmeralda Playa was an excellant choice.  The hotel reception is cool, pleasant and staff very willing to help.  The pool area is very good, apart from the niggling weeds inbetween the paving slabs on the sun terrace (made the area look slightly tatty).  The choice of food was excellant and anyone who says they couldn't find anything to eat must live on MacDonalds! The rooms were of an adequate size, although the balcony on the small side.  One slight niggle was the slowness of the lifts, it was often quicker to take the stairs (only on the way down as we were on the fifth floor).  Overall an excellant hotel which I would recommend to anyone.  The holiday was exactly what we wanted, peaceful (nightlife available if required), relaxing and very enjoyable. The resort caters for everyone, but is on some very steep slopes and a walk can mean very tired legs - so if you have trouble walking its not the ideal place to go. We will definitely book to go again.

Excellent hotel, rooms very clean and well serviced.
Staff all very helpful, pool area and sun beds very good and easy access. ideally placed to see the sights of Adeja and Las AMericas. near local market, taxi , shops. taxi fare to airport only €25. highly recommend this hotel as I had to rely on other reports like this to help me make up my mind. Can be contacted by email if you have a queery.Only negative was dinner menu if you are a big meat eater (typical spanish buffet fare). but plenty of alternatives

This is a great hotel, we did half board & couldn't fault it.  the food was good, we went in late june so we could see it being a bit more of a rush to get piping hot food in july and august.  June was quiet enough.
The pools was not huge but with the water park not far off and the beach only a few hundred metres away, who cares.  the location is also spot on for evrything else, easy distance to bars, restaurants, shops and the market for a few souveneirs.   BUT NO 18-30's croud singing outside your hotel in the early hours.... try and get a high floor, the views are a lot better, you may have to wait on the elevator but it's worth it.
The entertainments team was good, but more family orientated, not the best for couples, but thats just personal opinion ive always found that sort of thing a bit tacky.  The bar in the hotel was vary nice and chilled out, bit pricy though, but good when your waiting for the missus to finish applying her make up.
    All in, we loved it.....

This hotel was very pleasing to the eye, spotlessly clean in all areas and worthy of it,s 4 star rating which unfortunately could not be said of the food!! the evening dinner was extremely disappointing, so much so that we ate out on a few evenings rather than face (yet again) another dish of cold custard with a marie biscuit floating on top!!!! We found the staff on the whole quite pleasant and helpful in particular the chamber maids . This is definately not a hotel we would return to or recommend.

Have just returned from a great week in this hotel. As a single mother of a 5 year old there was plenty to keep us both entertained with a full entertainment program. Food was excellent, rooms very clean and comfortable. All staff are very nice and helpful. Could highly recommend this hotel and its location. Will definitely be returning.

On the whole the hotel was excellent.  The hotel foyer, bar area and pool areas were very good.  The bedrooms were basic, however, they were very clean and fit for purpose.  The food was excellent, with plenty of choice and availabailty irrelevent of the time you went for your meal. The staff were always helpful and polite when you required their assistance.

forever improving

14 December 2005
both my wife and i would complain if justified to possibly improve matters, but cannot find any faults with this hotel, people have
complained of cold food but the spanish enjoy their food a little bit cooler but it is very rare the food is cold and the staff realise their guests needs.
the reception is an absolute delight and compares with any hotel on the island.
the restaurant staff are perhaps a little bit too eager to please, they love to show you to your table but dont bother you if you prefer to be independant.
the entertainment especially for kids is excellent.if the parents dont like it they just leave it to the kids and relax in their own corner.
the esmeralda is very close to all bus stops travelling anywhere on the island and also close to the beautiful fanabe
which has got to be seen to be believed with all its colours,
fantastic shopping arcades,  entertainment and restaurents.
there were only two lifts operative on our recent visit.
i feel there should have been more urgency in restoring the third lift to cope with the volume of people in the hotel.
dont bother with the taxis to and from the airport-- the airport bus stops right outside the hotel and only 2 euros per person.  you just throw your bags on the bus and hop on.
or if you prefer pay 22 euros for a taxi.

Very attractive long established hotel. Bedroom very clean and attractive, bed although good quality had an extremely firm mattress, as I have a bad back it was very very hard to sleep on. Pleasant and helpful cleaning and reception staff.  Breakfast excellent but did not rate evening buffet meal very highly, next time would just have bed and breakfast.  Good pool area and surround and heated pool, childs pool and lap swimming pool.  Enjoyable entertainment at night.

Was very pleased with the accomodation.  The food was fantastic everything you ask for and the variety of food every night was unbelievable.  The rooms were of a very high standard and found no fault with the cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms.
I did find that the receptionists were not as helpful as they should have been which is why I have not given full marks.

This is the first time I had actually stayed at the Esmeralda Playa, however had visited the bar and entertainment room a number of times in the past while staying elsewhere.
I found the room clean and the restaurant well laid out. The waiters were pleasant.
The Poolside was relaxing and secure with a lifeguard on duty.
There are also poolside activities throughout the day along with some indoor and tennis courts.
If You participate there is an award ceremony in the evening
where You may win a certificate.
The evening entertainment normally starts with a Minidisco for
the Youngsters, quizes a mixture of music and shows for the rest
of us. If a quite evening is desired the bar area can be quite
relaxing.
Credit to the reception staff, cleaning staff and entertainment staff.
Will visit the hotel again.

FANTASTIC - thats all I have to say about the Esmeralda. My girlfriend and I had a great week here, with not a bad word to say. Food was great, pool was great, room was fantastic (bathroom and balcony were massive and how about his & hers wash basins with engraved taps?)and excellent location.

Quite simply anybody who tries to put down this hotel are looking for perfection, and other than paying thousands of pounds, where do you get that these days?

If you want a fun, relaxing and generally all round great holiday, Esmeralda is the place.
