Review of 'DANUBIUS GELLERT'

05 October 2005
I visited the Gellert for a friend's hens' weekend last year.  The hotel is brilliantly located - about 30 minutes drive from the airport, and an easy walk away from the centre of town. Don't let reports of the hotel being rundown put you off - the rooms are simple, yes - but huge, spotlessly clean and very comfortable.  Ask for a room on the river side for fantastic views across the Danube.  The impressive buffet breakfast would please even the fussiest of eaters, and the staff looked after our group of 18 with lots of helpful, friendly advice.  Make sure you put aside some time to visit the baths - absolutely stunning, and perfect for winding down after a long day out.  But beware if you are on the prudish side - swimsuits are not obligatory here!!

Review of 'DANUBIUS GELLERT'

The Gellert, (Pronounced Gel-Yert) is one of great dames of Europe. She's past her prime & a little tatty around the edges but oozing with old world charm & character.

Our Spacious, clean & comfortable Superior room had a stunning view over the Danube & even though it wasn't Double glazed the noise from the busy river side traffic never bothered us.

Breakfasts are buffet style, with a large choice of cereals, bread, meats, cheeses & fruit.

We didn't eat dinner in the hotel but did order room service; a nice warming Goulash soup to get the January chill out of our bones.

The worst thing about the hotel is the bar which is at least three times as expensive as anywhere else we visited in Budapest so be warned.

The best thing about staying there is that as a guest you are entitled to free access to one of the ultimate hungarian experiences; the Gellert baths. After sauntering down the corridor in your complimentary robe (bring your own flipflops) exchanging embarrassed smiles with other semi clad guests you enter by a private old fashioned brass elevator & descend to a whole other world.

Fantastic, we can't wait to go again!
