Calypso review 2008
01 June 2008
Stayed in the hotel from 20th May 2008 for a week. Bad time to go as the hotel was full of spanish students. They were there by the coach load - in their hundreds! This ruined my holiday as I went with my Mum and my 5 yr old child and they overtook the place, were loud, noisy and rude.
They were running around the place like mad people and getting food from the hotel restaurant was more like a school canteen than a hotel restaurant.
On the plus the food was nice, the staff were friendly, but I wouldn't go back there.
The entertainment was good, but the rooms were paper thin - so much so I heard people snoring from other rooms, you name it I heard it. If you are going there then I wish you luck!

Calypso Salou in Spring
20 April 2008
Stayed at the Calypso Hotel in Salou for a short spring break end of April 2008. Hotel had a real Spanish feel to it at this time of year with Spanish school trips and elderly Spanish Coach Guests. The elderly Spanish clientelle were generally very friendly and chatty. The teenage school students were noisy and happy but not a problem. We had a fantastic holiday. Hotel clean, tidy, food edible with a good selection. Even the our fussy eating children ate the pasta dishes heartily not just the spanish potato and chips they loved the cakes, cheese and ham for breakfast. Weather was warm enough to sit outside and enjoy but obviously a little too cold for the pools in April although the kids did try a dip. The kids enjoyed the two games rooms, bowling, pool and the internet facilities etc. Our teenage son enjoyed being the only English boy in the disco with the attractive Spanish girls. As a family we enjoyed the main family entertainment room watching the Medplaya entertainment reps. strut their stuff the Spanish way. The hotel was a short walking distance to the main shop street linking to the sea front 10 minutes walk away. We spent a few evenings in town, at this time of year very enjoyable, not too busy, some bars did have live music playing etc.
Great location for easy links to other areas. Port Ventura, easy to get to and from hotel and a great day out in April with very little queues. Barcelona short taxi to train station 7 euros then one and half hours on a train, a great day using hop on and off tourist bus. Great days out lots of fun and the kids also had time to squeeze in beach time digging.
Only a couple of little negatives, the walls in between the rooms are a little thin too the point we could hear the people in the room next door snoring and talking word for word. Also we had a room over the road that again with coach parties coming and going was little noisy at night. But considering what we paid this was a value for money holiday and the positives outweigh the negatives considerably like the hotel staff extremely helpful and friendly. A light meal ready and waiting for us at eleven o clock at night as we were late arrivals and they opened the restaurant for us to eat at this time. A lugguage room available to leave our cases in for the day at no charge as we were leaving late at night, s

calypso hotel revies
09 September 2007
If you are expecting a posh hotel this is not the one for you . At the Calypso you get what you pay for. The staff are very friendly and walking into the lobby you might think that you have a found a littel gem, but going to your hotel room you realise that this is a budget hotel. The hallways had a musty smell and the orange decor needed to be updated. The room were quite spacious and clean and held 4 beds comfortably. Although the walls were very thin and during the night we were disturbed by people talking and children knocking on the doors. The restaurant had a wide variety of food, but sometimes it was luke warm, the microwave ovens came in very handy on those occasions, but as stated before if you don't get to the restaurant earlier enough be prepared to queue for a table. The hotel entertainment was good and so the Calypso has some decent things to offer and so to close if you are looking for cheap and cheerful , the Calypso is the one for you.

ok for families
03 September 2007
The hotel accommodation was basic and was in need of updating, there wan't even a hairdryer in the room. The corridors and hall ways were also dirty looking. The food was average and at times you had to queue just to get in to the restaurant. The evening entertainment was good and there was loads for kids to do, however, if you don't have children and are looking for quite time I would not recommend this hotel. Lastly, if you want a decent nights sleep I would not recommend this hotel as the walls are so thin you can hear everything through them, we never got one good nights sleep the whole week we were there

just back from hotel calypso and have to say had a fantastic time would highly recommend it, the staff were great both day and night. we have two children 3 and 5 and they had a ball, the kids disco starts at 9.30 which they both really enjoyed... they shows were also fab, funny and entertaning.
the rooms are a bit on the small side four beds in one room but you bont spend time in it as there is two much to do, what with the four pools(two kids!!), games rooms and internet cafe.
the food was great, it never ran out and the staff were so friendly.
word of warning though to anyone travelling to portaventura with small children like mine....dont.... its a waste of good money my two were only allowed on four rides because of height restrictions, we went horse riding which you can book at reception and this was well worth it!!
all in all would go back to this hotel in a heart beat.!!!

Not ideal for large/disabled people
10 August 2007
The Calypso Hotel in general is excellent. The reception staff could not be more helpful. The rooms were basic but very clean. As our room had 4 beds in it you could hardly move, but everything in the room worked! The breakfast choice was fantastic. The theme nights were a bit disappointing as if you don't like the food that ties in with the theme, they did not supply a massive choice of alternatives. On the Tex Mex night, I ended up having to eat out elsewhere. The only seating provided at the bars, the pool and the entertainment area are silly flimsy plastic garden chairs. If you are slightly large or overweight you would struggle, and because of this my party could not sit in the bars or enjoy the entertainment. The main pool is not suitable for disabled people as the steps in are very steep, however the pool round at the second block past the games room has a disabled ramp access. The nearest beach is down a very steep hill again not suitable for disabled people. The beach along at the port is much nicer, and only just over a euro to get along to the main prom by bus. The resort train is a lot dearer. I would give Port Aventura a wide berth unless the entire party you are with like thrill rides. There was hardly anything for younger kids. We took evening passes, with the park being open from 7pm till midnight, but 90% of the rides and the boat and train that transfers you between areas were all shut by 9pm. I would definately go back to Salou though, and if so, would return to the Calypso Hotel.

FANTASTIC
09 August 2007
We throughly enjoyed our 5 night stay at Calypso. I've never stayed in a more organised and comfortable resort with such a friendly atmosphere. The staff and entertainers went out of there way to provide us with an excellent service and the resort had daily activities and entertainments for adults which was great. Food each day was delightful 10/10 for variety and taste. Room was comfortable and prices/rates were very reasonable. I've only good things to say about the place.

HOTEL CALYPSO
15 June 2007
We have just got back from the hotel calypso and all i can say is it is one of the best holidays i have ever had. We stayed in the block which had just been renovated and it was very clean and well maintained. Our room had 3 beds in it so space was a little limited but we did have a balcony which over-looked the pool area and stage. The bathroom was clean and the shower was fantastic as it was a power-shower. The rooms were cleaned daily and the towels were changed every day. The food was good and we were able to all choose something from the buffet every night. The theme nights were good and sometimes tied in the the shows at night. The Med Playa Entertainment Team should be commended for all the hard work and enthusiasm they put into each and every one of their games and shows at night. The team includes Carlos, Richard, Tori, Theresa, Iria, David to name but a few. They all make you feel very welcome and want you to join in all the games, although you don't have to. The best shows were Mama Mia, We will Rock You, Grease and the 100 years of cinema. Every part of the shows from the dancing, to the costumes to the acting/singing make the nights entertainment some of the best we have ever seen. I would highly recommend this hotel to all of our friends and anyone who likes to have a good holiday with a balance of fun, activities and meeting some of the best entertainers you will ever meet - we will definately be back next year.

HOTEL CALYPSO
15 June 2007
We just got back from the hotel calypso and would like to say we had a great time. To be fair our room was quite small with 3 beds in but that was the only problem we had . The rooms are basic but clean and we had a good view over the pool. The food is good was always hot and there was always something for even the fussiest of eaters, some nights they do theme nights and the waiters were dressed up in that theme [nice touch]. The hotel has 2 large pools and 2 kiddie pools which are all kept clean and both pools have a lifeguard. Now to the best point of this hotel are the Med Playa entertainment team who start at 10.30 in morning with all the days activities but are not over pushy if you say no they do not force you, then at night they have a kiddies disco followed by there show witch were fantastic [eg mama mia, grease,we will rock you,100 years of cinema ect] all were well done and the entertainers worked rally hard to pull them of so well, so thank you Carlos and the team. All in all i would definately go back and highly recommend this hotel.

18 April 2007
The hotel was very clean, maid service excellent, maid service & clean towels everyday. We were half board, the breakfast was continental, as good choice of meats, rolls, cakes etc, very filling, good start to the day. In the evening always a good selection of salads and the hot meals great as I personally like alot of different tastes. For the children there was always chips and another potato course and meat dishes. Unfortunately my husband did not take too much to the evening meals, very much chip & pie man!!!. The staff within the restaurant, bar and reception were friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere, plenty of games in the games room for the children, a godsend as it rained for two days. We are all great at pool now!!! Definitely will return to this hotel. Close to the centre, buses and supermarkets i.e english newspaper and the odd bottle of vino!!!. Port Adventura a must - two day pass good value. Also able to take packed lunches into the theme park, which saves loads of money.

the hotel was basic and the housekeeping was good. we arrived quite late at night and the hotel had kept back a cold dinner of hams and rolls for us. my children 2&6 loved the waiting staff who were always happy and pleased to help. of course the kids loved the fact they had a lolly after each dinner! because we were there during the last week of the easter hol it was busy. the food was buffett style and varied, something for everyone including the kids. it also doesnt have a car park and we managed to get a parking fine. we took advantage of a 7day for 3day pass at portaventura which of course my hubby and the kids loved. as i dont really like crowds im glad we came in april as salou and the park had started to get busy. of course it rained but seeing that it was april i cant complain. we all loved and well most definately book the hotel again.

Overall the Calypso was excellent value for money, we really enjoyed our stay there and have no complaints. The room was adequate, nothing spectacular but clean and roomy. The food was really nice, buffet style with lots of choices so something to suit everyone, My kids managed to find something they liked every day despite being quite fussy! We stayed here at the begginning of April so the season hadnt really got going and the entertainment was geared towards the Spanish pensioners that were staying there, however my kids loved it and joined in with everything, the medplaya staff were lovely with the children. Just round the corner are the bus stops and they have staff giving out info , they were really helpful and we went to Tarragona, Barcelona and Port Aventura on public transport, we will definetly go back and would stay at the Calypso again just not a this time of year as the weather really let us down it rained every day!!

The rooms were lovely and clean, the showers quite powerfully. Although it can go from hot to cold during your shower!!. If you're travelling with friends, I would recommend that you book together as one of my friends was allocated in Calypso II, a totally different building, and they couldn't be changed... Also, it took about 15 mins to walk to the beach, where all the shops and restuarants were. But all in all it's grand for young people who don't mind a walk, but it may be a bit of a distance for elderly people.

24/11/06 We have just come back from hotel calypso. We thought the hotel was in a very good area an clean. Our rooms were cleaned each day, although the rooms are very basic an only had 2 plugs an 1 of the was what the tv was in. The staff were very friendly but the reps didnt really care. There was no entertainment through the day (so would be not good if you had children) but had dancing going on a night for the spanish. The food was always cold an not very good. It was only good if you like chips...... they have them morning, afternoon and evening. The hotel was all for the spanish which you could expect at this time of the year. We would consider going back to try it in season.

I must say the entertainment team were excellent, there is alot to do for the kids. I would reccommend portoventura for the kids, but only if the kids are 5 and above as there are not an awful lot of rides for the little ones. I would reccommend this hotel.

Myself and my wife stayed at the Calypso for a week with 3 kids and our baby at the start of August 06, We found the staff very friendly and the night entertainment very good, starts a bit late..10 pm, so if you have young kids it can be a pain as they want their bed. The pools were clean and very nice, the food was really good, we could not fault it, mind you.. if you like chips and chicken nugets for breakfast...your sorted!! its a buffet style, you go up and help yourself, plenty to pick from. There can be a queue when you pop down for breakfast or dinner so pick your times wisely. The rooms were cleaned every day and again we could not fault it, Our beds were not very comfortable, that was the only down side, not sure about other rooms but that was a real let down. Our room faced the main street, so you had traffic all night passing by,and on Fri and Sat you had the main disco till the wee hours. The lifts were a nightmare when it go busy, i stood for 23 mins with the buggy waiting to go down for breakfast, send the rest of the family down and i followed some 30 mins later. It was a nice hotel, if it wasnt for the beds i would say we would stay again. try it, your bed may not feel like your sleeping on a bed of rocks and rolled up soaks :) the air con made a bit of a din too... keep the balcony doors shut to activate the air con.. took a while to figure that gem out... 3 out of 5..

This is a large family hotel used by a major uk tour operator, Therefore you will find kids clubs, mini disco and childrens activities, both around the pool area and in he main bar(outside in high season)until 12.00.midnight. Accompanied by lots of noise, with kids running around.Having said that we went with young children so they joined in!and they loved it.The resident entertanment team worked hard to keep things going without pushing you to take part. The evening entertainment was also suitable for children, varied from Chinese acrobats to a Barry White tribute band, some of it good ,some only average. The hotel is quite large, near to shops, and bars and a 15 minute walk to a choice of three beaches. The dining room was busy and on a couple of days a queue formed waiting for empty seats. The food was varied with something for everyone, better than average spanish hotel fare. We found the staff friendly and helpfull, with english speaking front desk staff. Rooms are average size and equipped, fresh bed linen 3 times in 8 nights and fresh towels daily. Bar prices are reasonable.Though it never bothered us, the hotel caters for groups of french/spanish school children 12 to 15 years who add considerably to the general noise. If you want a family holiday with things for the kids to do in a reasonable location then this could be thr hotel for you, but if you want a quiet romantic break with a loved one forget it.

Sunbeds and umbrellas were easy to find no matter what time of day it was. entertainment was absolutely brilliant and the reps and entertainment staff put on a show every night. Food was ok and there were even 'special' nights where servers and cleaners would dress up and there would be a particular sort of food on offer. Rooms were cleaned every day and there is a games room so children are never bored. i would reccommend this hotel to everyone as we thought it was brilliant!

THIS WAS OUR FIRST TIME AWAY ON A 'DO IT YOURSELF' BREAK AND WITHOUT OUR CHILDREN OF 11 AND 5. AS RECOMMENDED FROM OTHER TRAVELLERS WE CAUGHT THE BUS OUTSIDE THE AIRPORT FOR 5.30 EUROS EACH. THE TAXIS WERE QUOTING 40 EUROS! THE BUS TOOK US STRAIGHT TO OUR DOOR AND SAID IT WOULD PICK US UP. FIRST IMPRESSIONS WERE GOOD AND THE RECEPTIONIST, WHO WAS ENGLISH, WAS VERY HELPFUL. OUR ROOM WAS ABOVE THE RECEPTION ON 2ND FLOOR. WE THOUGHT GOD ITS GOING TO BE NOISY BY THE ROAD BUT WE WERE GLAD WE WERE THERE WHEN WE REALISED ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT WAS IN THE MIDST OF THE OTHER BLOCKS OF CALYPSO. I THINK WE WOULD HAVE ASKED TO BE MOVED IF WE WERE PUT THERE. FOOD WAS PLENTIFUL BUT AT TIMES COLD BUT WE JUST LEFT IT AND THEN WENT UP FOR MORE THAT HAD JUST BEEN BROUGHT OUT FROM THE KITCHEN. BAR PRICES MUCH THE SAME AS IN THE RESORT. PORT AVENTURA WAS BRILLIANT. BUT A WORD OF WARNING "IF PAYING BY CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD" YOU MUST TAKE YOUR PASSPORT AS PROOF OF ID. WE HAD TO GO BACK TO THE HOTEL TO PICK OURS UP. THIS IS ALSO THE CASE IF YOU WANT TO HIRE A LOCKER (4 EUROS) WHY YOU NEED A PASSPORT FOR THIS GOD KNOWS! COSTA CARIBE WATER PARK WAS OK BUT A BIT OF A LET DOWN IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO OTHER WATER PARKS IN EUROPE. THEY DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO TAKE FOOD IN EITHER. ALL IN ALL IT WAS A BRILLIANT THREE NIGHT BREAK AND CERTAINLY WORTH THE MONEY. IF NANNY AND GRANDAD ARE AVAIALBLE NEXT YEAR WE WILL DEFINITELY COME BACK.
