double room what We Booked

07 August 2008
As a small budget, we do always chase on-line before we departure but often we face to surprising face of the hotel room. We had booked double but it was room for 4, 2single bed were together and 2 in seperate position. Room was not dirty but very old. Far from the disappointing, it was alright.

Very pleasing!

I had booked this hotel online and had not seen any photos of it before. I was pleasantly surprised on my arrival to find a lovely building on a quiet street, not far from all the action that Edinburgh had to offer. When I checked in, I believe that Alpharooms hadn't passed on my details correctly as the clerk advised that I'd not paid for breakfast - on presenting an email I'd printed off from alpharooms, this was quickly resolved. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and accomodating, even to the level of letting me borrow a fork to eat a take-away in my room. Parking is an issue if you're travelling to Cairn Hotel in a car as it's in a controlled zone which is metered - I hadn't looked into this before my stay though, so this wasn't the hotel's fault. Next time I'm in Edinburgh overnight, I would have no quarms with staying at the Cairn Hotel and, would probably prefer to, as I've had a very good experience with them.

Review of Cairn Hotel

15 April 2008
I was impressed by the location of the hotel as it was easy to get to the main shopping area and also a short walk to Leith Walk and access to buses, but other than that I do not have a lot of good things to say about this hotel. On arrival we were given the key for a double room when in fact we have booked a triple room. There was a lot of confusion regarding this and there wasn't a room ready for us. We had to go away and come back an hour later. We we arrived later as requested we got the key to our triple room, unfortunately it was a bit grubby looking, the toilet seat was broken and my bed was very uncomfortable indeed. We were only here for 2 nights so didn't see any point in complaining to the staff as they were all foreign and were not very helpful. Don't want to seem very negative about the hotel because maybe certain parts are nice. Maybe we were just unlucky on this occassion, but if my experience is anything to go by I would not recommend it to anyone, especially families.

Cairn Hotel

The hotel was in a good location and very easy to get to. We arrived at night and were greeted by a very nice night porter. The room was small but comfortable. Breakfast was interesting. The Cereal bar was well stocked and you had a good choice. The waiting staff I feel could have done better it felt like they did not know what they were doing half the time, they were very slow in taking our order for tea/coffe and hot breakfast. I did find that the breakfasts being brought out were taken back because they were wrong, when we finally got our order it was wrong as well but we took what was brought out to save time. We undersdtood that the hotel was being refurbished, which in some places did need doing, but overall we enjoyed our stay at the Cairn Hotel and might book again next year, hopefull by then the waiting staff well have got their act together and the Hotel would have and a full spruce up.

Good points:- the staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was nice and warm and the breakfast was excellant

Bad points:- the double bed was small, the rooms are a bit cramped and very basic but clean, the hotel is being renovated at the moment so we had a lovely view of scaffolding from our room.

Location is really good being only a 5 minute walk from Princes Street

I stayed at the Cairn Hotel in Edinburgh and found the location very convenient. There is a bus stop about 50 meters from the hotel; it is on a major line where buses stop every few minutes; Waverley rail station is within walking distance of the hotel.
The Pavillion Theatre is just around the corner as well as some pubs and food outlets. A few hundred meters further, there is a shopping mall.
Princes Street - the main shopping street - is again within walking distance or if you prefer, a few bus stops away. Edinburgh Castle towers above Princes Street.
The hotel is at the edge of Edinburgh's new town and at the foot of Calton Hill. It is on the road to Leith, with its Ocean Terminal and the Brittania Royal Yacht; the bus to Ocean Terminal is just outside the hotel.
The hotel is in a dead end street, so there is virtually no noise from traffic.
The hotel is located in a row of Georgian Houses and is only two stories high but the corridors are long and reminiscent of a labyrinth. The buildings are quite old; in my room the window frame was rather rotten, so that might be cold in winter. It was OK in May.
The hotel was reasonably clean. Breakfast is simple: boxes of cereal, juice or cooked breakfast. The breakfast room is in the basement and is quite plain. I do not think other meals were served there.
There are a few comfortable chairs in the lobby and a small bar.
The bedrooms were small. The first night I was allocated a single bedroom which was tiny but it had a fine large window. However, all the rooms around mine were occupied by boisterous school children. After I asked for a quieter room, I was immediately given a double room at the other end of the building. This was a lot bigger and quiet. The en-suite bathroom was tiny; the shower worked well; the sink was in the room itself rather than in the ensuite bedroom. There was a small portable TV without remote control. There was no radio.
So in short: great location, quiet street, helpful staff, average rooms.
