NORTH MIDDLETON , GOREBRIDGE, EH23 4QY
Establishment The romantic Borthwick Castle was built in 1430 in the Borders immortalised by Sir Walter Scott. Once the refuge of Mary Queen Of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell and besieged by Oliver Cromwell in 1650, this castle is now open to the public to accommodate guests looking for an engaging and rich place to stay. The grand scale of each room and the interior architecture has to be seen to be understood. Bedchambers are tastefully furnished in period style, have four poster beds, showers and toilets en-suite, telephones, tea and coffee making facilities with cots available at an extra charge. Care is taken to ensure that twentieth century facilities do not obscure the medieval ambience. The attention to detail throughout the hotel is clear, from the arched windows, tapestries and the small chapel through to the Great Hall where up to 50 people can engage in a banquet at one time, dining by the chef’s own gourmet ‘modern British’ flavours.
