We stayed one night in the Basma Hotel before going to Abu Simbel, and one night after returning from the Lake Nasser cruise.
We had two rooms each time, and both times the rooms were large and clean, and the views from the balconies were wonderful. The location is good because it is far from any busy roads, the Nubian Museum is 5 minutes away, and there are excellent views in every direction. It is a very hot and not so interesting 20 minute walk to the center of the town, but there are free hourly shuttles and a taxi is only 5 to 10 Egyptian pounds.
The pool and garden area was quite beautiful and, because we were in the low season (late June), never crowded.
On the negative side, I found one of the bathrooms to be in need of an upgrade, with aged caulking and moldy corners. We also found that one of the sliding balcony doors would not properly lock. Finally, the staff in the restaurant (we only at breakfast there) was slow to remove plates and bring coffee, and the food was mediocre at best.
Overall, we would recommend this hotel, mainly for it's location and pleasant atmosphere.
