my wife and i and another couple stayed the weekend for the runrig concert on on the saturday night. we arrived late morning, a bit early for check in, not to worry, our bags were taken from us placed in a secure room by the very friendly staff. later the check in went very smoothly, the room you could not fault at all. bar staff very helpfull.breakfast very good (buffet style) all in all we had a very pleasant stay, i must comment on ANGUS at the front desk, i think anybody would be hard pushed to not get any answer from him regarding travel, events and things to do in edinburgh, a very helpfull man.

Bagpipes and Kilts and in the Sun!

09 June 2008
A very warm welcome was recieved when I arrived late, direct from the airport and this customer expeience continued through the weekend. The manager Sue, noticed we were amiring the wooden carved dog at the entrance and took the time to give us the history, as we had noticed one the same at the Lygon Arms (part of the chain) the weekend before this trip. The bar staff were exceptional and despite been busy with a prom night made you feel like a guest..rare in today's busy life schedule. The Spa, pool, sauna and steam room all worked fine and again friendly reception staff. The area does need a little work as it does look worn out! The location is excellent 100 meters from the Royal mile, 500 meters to Princes street. 10 Mins walk to the Castle..will stay their again.

JUST THE BEST MASSAGE

11 May 2008
We arrived late, luckily the airport bus stops reasonably close. Non smoking as promised, iron arrived immediately on request. Room was facing North bridge street so was a little noisy but spacious with a luxury bed. Duvets were a little too heavy even with no extra heating. Room needed tweaking with the shower rail and cupboard door undergoing DIY. As for the message, WOW,WOW just the best I have ever had. The price was WOW but on a pamper w/e it was worth every penny, no wonder its called the "best massage company". I thought my wife was going overboard about this masseur !!!so I checked him out as well and my neck is now WOW..Great location and great reception staff. Would stay again especially if promised a room on the other side. Need to clean up the pool area more often

Excellent Hotel

11 April 2008
My friend and I are a pair of 40-somethings who meet up once a year for a weekend and this year it was Edinburgh. We normally book through Alpharooms and this is the best place we have stayed in. Checked in early but room was ready, Easter Bank Holiday weekend was very cold but the room was very toasty, large with a view over Arthur's seat and the sea. High floor so no noise (except from the inevitable selfish b...'s that think it's fine to shriek in the corridors late at night (we were close to the lift too). Neverthe less, the room was spacious, well equipped, clean and the beds are so comfortable I almost never left mine! Breakfast was all you could want - varied, hot, fresh and plentiful. Staff helpful in the extreme. Ordered taxis for us, gave us good directions and were very polite and friendly. Hotel central to Royal Mile and Waverley Station, and also the shops. Could not fault this place. Want to go to Edinburgh again just so I can sleep in that bed again! Very reasonably priced too. Some 4-star hotels are really 3-star, but the Carlton lives up to its rating.

A good choice!

16 March 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed my short stay in this hotel. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was clean and pleasantly furnished. The breakfast was plentiful. Dinner was appetising and good value. The location was perfect for sight-seeing in the city, within walking distance of the castle, holyrood palace, the royal mile and shopping on Princes Street. I recommend this hotel.

Not great value for money

16 February 2008
Arriving at the hotel at half past 2 we had to wait 20 minutes for my room to be cleaned...why bother saying you can check in from 2 if the rooms aren't going to be ready? Entered the room and not majorly impressed. The room was cold and dark and very small. The noise from North Bridge was horrendous and disrupted our sleep that night. However, the staff were very nice and the breakfast was good. As this trip was a present I paid more than I usually do for a hotel but was not impressed with what I recieved for the money paid.

Arriving at the hotel early morning after an even earlier flight the staff wre most welcoming. I was able to obtain breakfast and charge although I had not yet checked in. the business centre is a very useful facility although a little expensive. The staff throughout my short stay were very helpful, taxis and local info easily obtained. I did use the gym facility...even attended an aerobics class which are free of charge...an excellent end to a very long day!My only criticism would be that I had a corner room which although spacious was dark due to the small window but great size. I will be staying here again next trip if the price is right.

This hotel is in a very good location, between the old city and the new. There are lots of bars and restaurants nearby and the nightlife is lively. The food in the hotel is very good, if a little on the expensive side. It is also near to the castle and other attractions. The room was adequate but a little tired for a 4 star. All in all though I would recommend this hotel. s

Ideal location, staff really helpful. Room was enormous - 3 sides overlooking North Bridge, Princess Street, and over the sea to the islands it was fab! Room had 2 king siz beds, tv,wifi, mini bar, tea/coffee, table/chairs, desk, very large bathroom/shower. Downfall single glazed therefore heard busy traffic, BUT being on the 5th floor with the views and watching looking out - did not bother us. Breakfasts goo (but get down before 9.30a.m.) Well recommended.

superb hotel 3 mins walk from airport bus drop off, train station, and city bus tour stop.1 minute to centre of royal mile and about four mins walk to centre of princes street for all major shops.only down point is rooms are very warm in winter and temp control is fixed. not great because windows are old style and only slightly open.everything else here is top class and is the ideal base for a stay. staff and beds are equally as brilliant.

Short stay for the Edinburgh Fringe was made wonderful by our stay at the Carlton. The best hotel bed we have ever slept in, polite curteous staff, good food and a lovely (if small) pool/sauna complex. There were faults: the bath plug broke and we couldn't empty it. Concierge couldn't find a plunger so late at night, so we had to pull the plug out with a spoon, and staff tended to monopolise the lifts, which I found bad practice, but otherwise a delightful stay. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is very good with one exception, the service in the bar is a hit or miss. There was a woman working in the bar who could clearly not cope and to be honest at times we were kept waiting 10 minutes and more to be served and if you wanted ice that was a further 5 minutes. The restaurant and rooms were good.

Disappointed to find the pool closed over the weekend of our stay. This was to be a relaxing  time with my daughter ,so not happy to have to walk outside in the rain on Sunday a.m as back door not opened despite a phone call from The Scotsman. Meal on Friday was great as were the cooked breakfasts.
Room needed more lighting over mirror and a stool at dressing table would be helpful.
Good location for 'doing' Edinburgh.

Caring Carlton

20 February 2007
Having travelled to Edinburagh to visit our eldest daughter,we were worried that we might not have been able to afford the Hotel when we viewed it in a local broucher.A friend recomended alpharooms.com  and the Carlton came up trumps. The Hotel was clean ,warm .comfortable, and most of all it was very child friendly.Plenty of staff were on hand to see to your every need ,no matter how trivial it seemed to us.The hotel employed a good amount of Europeans who were  only to willing to help,We met a Polish,a Hungarian whose English was impecable. The leisure facilities were basic but again sufficient for the passing through traveller. The Carlton was ideal for shopping and browsing  the Royal Mile as it sits between the two BIG places in Edinburagh

First impressions excellent, staff very helpful, room was nice enough.  However it took two phone calls to reception to get someone to fix the lights.  After returning from a night out with friends the staff on the lounge bar were once again attentive.  My biggest disappointment considering The Carlton is a four star Hotel...was waiting for fifteen mins for breakfast on Sunday morning, along with about 30 other guests.  I have never encountered this in my life, refreshments were put on for us while we waited and staff once again were helpful.  I did however speak to the head waiter about the situation and he told me that this happened regularly which I was even more shocked at.  I would say resolving this issue should be a high priority for the management team.  My friends that I stayed in the Hotel with who travelled from England are already planning there next trip to Edinburgh and The Carlton Hotel is not short listed for accommodation.

My husband and me have spent 2 nights in January and could not fault the hotel.  The staff were curtious the rooms were a good size with good facilities (huge comfortable bed).  The leisure centre is good but could do with a fresh paint.  The breakfast was excellent, buffet style and you could get a full english through to a croisant, the restaurant is very good with a nice choice on the menu and the food was delicious.  All in all we would go back as it was good value for the price we paid and was in a great location.  The building is lovely but then so are all of edinburghs buildings.

I must say that my first impressions of this hotel upon arrival, far exceeded the photograghs displayed on the internet, so I was pleasantly surprised!  The location of the hotel was ideal if you are without a car, as it is conveniently located for bars, restaurants, shopping and local tourist attractions, so no complaints there!  However... I was dissappointed with the standard of this hotel as it appears very luxurious but infact I felt cheated considering the prices they charge! I spent 5 days in this hotel over the christmas period which was supposed to be a treat for myself and my family, but my son took ill after visiting the pool which was supposed to be heated but it was freezing!  Therefore, we ended up spending more time in the hotel than planned!  The hotel itself and our room was very cold, general hygiene of the hotel was certainly not up to standard (visable dust in the dining area, behind the bed etc!) and lastly the presentation and quality of the food was certainly not of a 4 star standard but the prices were!!! I will definitely return to Edinburgh to see all the attractions we missed out on with this trip, but I'm afraid I will not be spending my next trip at the Carlton Hotel!

Great hotel and great location.  The hotel does have it's own carpark but it gets full quickly, but you are able to use the Carpark at the Raddison which is just round the corner, cost £18 per day.
Do not leave breakfast to the last minute as you will have to wait for ages, this was the only let down but we went at 9am and had just a couple of minutes wait.
Would definitely recommend it and will definitely be staying again. Thank you

Great location with excellent views from our room. Leisure facilities tickity boo, steam room, sauna and small but adequate pool - oh and a whirl pool too. Hotel even organised a win for Scotland at Murrayfield - such service !!
Breakfast - fill your boots time - no haggis only negative observation. Having read some of the other critiques before stay but after having booked was a little wary. All concerns were unfounded. We adopt the policy of smile and the world smiles with you and I guess Mr Carlton George had his smiley face on for us during our stay.

On the plus side this hotel is in a central location, very close to  Princes Street, Waverly Station and the Royal Mile.

I only had a short stay, so did not get to use all of the hotels amenities, which I am assuming is why it gets it's fourth star. The room was okay, clean and tidy, however it was cold and had no heating controls. It also lacked some of those little things you come to expect from a 4* hotel room.

I would stay there again if the discount was as good as this time, but I will certainly be tempeted to try another hotel for my next visit.

This is a high quality hotel in a most superb location if you want to be in the centre of Edinburgh. Close to Waverley Station (just above it really- apparently there is a lift to the hotel, from Market St, essential if you have luggage). Almost on the Royal Mile and just across the bridge from Princes St. you couldn't be in a better situation. The service was friendly, my room was palatial, the breakfast was excellent and I had use of the spa/sauna/small swimming pool.

I stayed at the Carlton for five days during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.  As it was situated in one of the most convenient locations in Edinburgh  I was able to reach all of the Fringe venues within ten minutes.  However it offered poor value for money in that I didn't receive the standard of service one normally expects from expensive hotels. House-keeping was a bit of a hit and a miss.  Soaps and Shampoos were not relaced and I had to ask for them.  And it was only on day four that I discovered that lotion was available. And there were no shower caps provided.  Also the tables in the dining room were so uncomfortably close together that you were subjected to the conversations of the people at the next table.  If the service improves and manages to reach the regal style of the impressive marble lobby I might consider returning

Arrived early afternoon, no-one available to park car for at least 45mins & as you cannot park outside the hotel had to park at the nearby sister hotel. This was rather incovenient especially as I have difficulty walking. The room was for the disabled (not requested)& had no towels available when we arrived. The breakfast was a bit scarce & we had to wait 10mins for more sausages then when we went to get them they had all gone again, eventually a waiter brought them to our table but obviously by this time the rest of our plate was finished. I have stayed in many hotels all over the world & unfortunately felt the service in the Carlton was well below par & I would not recommend it for comfort or friendliness however I would definitely say the location was perfect.

I and my son stayed at the Carlton in mid-June to attend my daughter's graduation at Edinburgh University.  Our stay was enjoyable and comfortable.  Staff were friendly and helpful.  However, though it was adequate, the breakfast buffet was a little unimaginative and needs more range.  Also would have been nice to have had at least slippers provided - if not bathrobes as well!  Although not terrible, a couple of things were missing from the room that were supposed to have been provided - e.g. shoe cleaner.

The £11 Million spent on refurbishment of this hotel in the recent past shows. It is certainly 4 star+ and enhances any visit to the beautiful city of Edinburgh. The public areas are bright, spatious , attractive and welcoming. The bedrooms are most comfortable , beautifully furnished and multi functional. Lap top internet connection is provided .
Breakfast /Dinner are excellent . Good choice , well presented, highest stansard of hygiene.
The "Body sense" leisure complex is the ideal place to unwind /relax freshen up  after a busy day, (or before a busy day)
The hotel is located right in the centre of Edinburgh, just a couple of minutes walk from Princess Street, The Royal Mile , Edinburgh Castle , Holyrood Palace etc.  It is also within a few hundred yards of the Airport shuttle bus stop . ( Only £5 return)
The Carlton offers excellent value for money if you book through Alpharooms.com (Much more expensive if you book direct.
I have to give the Carlton 10 out of10 for its friendly helpful staff. Will certainly go back.
Booking with Alpharooms.com was a very smooth effortless transaction.

'CARLTON CAN'T'

07 May 2006
Beautiful hotel with friendly staff in excellent location.  What a pity it was let down by small but important inadequacies.  I arrived on a hot sticky day in a hot sticky room. The air conditioning promised in every room was absent in mine.  I'll open the curtains, I thought and let in the beautiful sunshine.  The curtains were open; the room was simply dark and drab, although the bed was large and comfortable.  I'll switch on the light and read for a little before I have my shower.  The lighting was so poor, I could not see to read.  I'll move the desk lamp, I thought.  The flex was too short and the lamp was wired in.  I'll ask for a lamp.  'Sorry, madam, we have fashion lighting'  'Can I borrow a lamp?' 'Sorry Madam.  The only plug in the room is for the computer on the desk anyway.' 'Oh dear, I should have brought an extension flex.'  'Yes Madam'
Bad night, no air, no light and nothing worth watching on the telly!
Breakfast.  'I am allergic to wheat.  Have you any ryvita.  'Sorry madam, no ryvita, no crispbreads, no oatcakes and no gluten free bread.  We do try our best to cater for special diets.  'Will you have anything tomorrow?' 'Sorry madam, but you could buy some and bring it in.  We're right in the middle of Edinburgh.'
I think I'll try a B&B next time!

The room was clean and very comfortable. The only problem we had was that the room was at the front of the Hotel which made it very noisy at night.
The buffet breakfast was excellent.
leisure facilities were good. We made use of the pool, steam room and jaccussi on the Sunday morning.
Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
The Concierge again looked after our case after we checked out to enable to do some shopping.

Have visited Edinburgh a few times before and chose this hotel from it's reputation and location. The hotel is clean and very comfortable with friendly, helpful staff. It is on North Bridge which is just a few mins walk from the train station and is ideal for getting to both parts of town for shopping/drinking/eating out etc.
I stayed there with my friend for a relaxing two night break, just to go shopping and chill out. Our twin room was large and well equipped, clean and well kept...  comfy beds, nice fluffy towels, plenty of mirrors (always important to us girls) and loads of storage space (for all the shopping we'd bought).
All in all a good, comfortable hotel, lives up to expectations and reputation. Only one criticism (!) - no WARM croissants at breakfast, why do hotels always serve them stone cold? they are much nicer when they've been warmed up for a bit...

I would recommend the Carlton Hotel to anyone booking a trip to Edinburgh.  We got an airlink 100 bus(every 10 minutes) from the airport to waverly station and then it was a short walk to the hotel.  The walk from the station is up a steep hill, but we were able to access the hotel from the bodysense gym on the lower floor and get the lift up to reception.  The staff at the hotel could not have been more helpful.  I was travelling with my grandmother and they offered us extra assistance.  The rooms are spacious and well equipped with tv, mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, internet connection and hairdrier.  Guests are able to use the bodysense leisure club below the hotel which has a lovely swimming pool and jacquzzi.  Breakfast is served until 10 and offered a wide range of food.  We ate in the hotel restaurant on our first night, the food was delicious, but on our second night we went to Garfunkels for a more low-key meal, which is just around the corner on the High Street.  Princes Street, Waverly Station and the Castle are all within walking distance from the hotel and there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.  The service at the Carlton was amazing and we plan to return.

Very central and convenient to all the locations, from Bars, Pubs, Eating places, Castle, Historical Places etc., don't need a car, just a pair of good shoes, lots of coppel streets. Rooms at the hotel were large (also large beds). Had a room at the back, so not that much noise there.
Breakfast buffet had good choices,  had evening meal at hotel and it was reasonable for the excellent food. Went for the Rugby Match - England v. Scotland-, Atmosphere and result were great, hip hip hurray. Would go to same city and hotel again, as there is lots more to do and see, magic.

We found the hotel, easily accessible to our night out venue, superb accomodation and enjoyed a thoroghly good breakfast on the Sunday morning. We parked at the car park at the Radisson hotel ( £16 for 24 hrs ). Did think that was a bit on the expensive side but city centre parking is never a bargain!

This is a lovely hotel, easily accessible from Waverley Station.  Staff were incredibly helpful and also eager to please.  Rooms were large and well laid out.  They were very clean and well kept.  Bathrooms were newly renovated, spacious and again, immaculate.  I had both breakfast and dinner in the hotel and was impressed at the quality.  Dinner prices are very reasonable for Edinburgh city centre.  My only complaint would be a lack of information in the rooms regarding meal times and hotel facilities.  Also, try to request a back facing room as traffic on the main street can be rather noisy at times.
