Fabulous 5 day Break
25 October 2008
I went on a fabulous 5 day break with my mum from 11th September 2008.
The hotel was in a fantastic location, right in the heart of Madrid. Most places are within walking distance...which we did!!
We bought a 2 day bus pass for the open top bus which gives you the guided tour of all the places of interest. Well worth it. Once you have done the sightseeing you can use the bus to hop on and off to get yourself around Madrid.
The hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. The room we had had been updated and was very nice, clean and with everything you require.
Some of the public areas could do with a lick of paint but nothing major.
The breakfast was more than adequate with plenty to fill you up for the start of your day.
Please be careful if you venture into Retiro Park as my mum had her handbag stolen on our last day. This did not put us off returning to Madrid and I would absolutely stay at the Asturias again. Highly recommended

Good for short stay
11 September 2008
We stayed late August 2008. Got a room on the sixth floor. Very spacious room with a fan and TV. The hotel needs a lick of paint and a better lift. The breakfast was excellent and the budget price for this hotel means it will be on my list for my next visit to Madrid. Staff were friendly and helpfull.

The hotel is very clean, in a fantastic location right in the heart of Madrid and good value for money Our room was quiet and quite large The only problem really is that it doesn't have air conditioning but please don't let that put you off as everything else about the hotel is very good

3 day Madrid Break
14 June 2008
Three days break in Madrid we all needed -
So to find a hotel we proceeded -
And what did we find on the Alpha Rooms site
The Asturias Hotel - and at just the right price!
Breakfast included included - this sounds a good deal,
Most places much dearer - not including the meal.
So we booked and felt pleased - until the next day
When we read some reviews to see what they`d say!
Oh dear! Very noisy and water not hot
Ear plugs essential - no sleep til five o`clock,
Breakfast not good and staff not too friendly
decor all old and not very trendy!
We set out from home expecting the worst
But what did we find from the very first?
Staff very helpful - and friendly and smiley
Rooms a nice size and all clean and tidy.
Yes it was noisy - Madrid`s a buzzing town
A few drinks - some earplugs - and get your head down!
Lots of hot water - showers no problem at all
Breakfast fine - smiling waitors on call.
The building is old - has seen better days
but if t`were updated, then what would we pay?
Locations so central - it was all there quite near us
If you don`t like to walk, there`s a nearby tourbus!
To those who found fault - we can only repeat
As value for money - Asturias you won`t beat!!

3 nights in Madrid
11 April 2008
You get what you pay for! We paid £180 for 3 nights B&B in April. It is very central and you can walk to all the major sights easily. We had read several bad reviews of the Asturias so were not expecting much. However, the room was clean, bed linen and towels better than some other places we have stayed. Clean and comfortable and staff were very helpful with any requests we made. It was noisy due to a bar located in the side street below our window - not the hotel's fault. It does need refurbishing but then will inevitably cost more.

my 5 nights in madrid
09 April 2008
Hotel staff are friendly and helpful for a budget hotel this is great value right in the heart near to all the bars resturants and a short walk from museums so no traveling needed. the only downside would be I thought the rooms could do with a lick of paint but the rooms were clean and the towels changed regularly. So would I go back? yes

Great location, good value for money
27 March 2008
Location of this hotel is fantastic, as other reviews suggest. You're in the heart of everything and just a short walk to all the main areas. We walked everywhere and didn't need public transport.
We travelled in March, so didn't notice the lack of air conditioning, however, the hotel is very noisy and I struggled sleeping at night.
I couldn't believe that breakfast was included in the low price that we paid - this was OK, fairly heavy on the bread front, I guess, but plenty of food nevertheless.
The rooms were clean but very basic. There's nothing in the rooms as a way of facilities - no hairdryer, remember this, girls! The hotel bar is quite expensive but there are plenty of bars and restaurants as soon as you leave the hotel. For an authentic way to eat ham and cheese, try Museo de Jamon, on the way to Puerta del Sol, a great place!
Overall, very basic but you get what you pay for. I wouldn't stay there again mainly because of the noise but if this doesn't bother you, go for it!

Location A*, Hotel C
25 September 2007
All the reviews I read before booking Asturias were not far off the mark. One could not get much better in the way of location as it is so central to almost everything. Yes the rooms could be better (a little fresh paint etc.) but the staff on the whole are helpful and friendly. Would possibly use this hotel again but later in the year as the rooms are a bit stuffy even mid september, but a few nightcaps will help one overcome that!

Good Value for Money, great location
10 September 2007
This hotel is very good value for money and in a fantastic location, but there is a price to pay and it is very noisy at night. As there is no air con, it is unbearable without the window open,it is then hard to get any sleep until 5am until the streets calm down.

26 February 2007
the Asturias was very good value for money. despite what we had heard in other reviews we found our room was quiet, however unless you were an early riser, you had a luke warm shower! Breakfast was good, staff friendly, but it was a bit disappointing that the bar only opened for a couple of hours before dinner and not again. the location of the hotel was ideal for all the major sites its very near the Seville metro station and is on the MAdrid Vision bus trip, there are some lovely restaurants nearby with reasonable 'menu del dia'. however i do realise that the cheap prices charged make the asturias attractive to school groups... and there were quite a number of them there during our week stay. but they were well supervised and were accomodated on the upper floors.

Excellent Location. Although hotel very dated, it was clean, fresh towels and bed linen each day and breakfast although limited choice certainly had enough to eat! We found the reception staff very helpful . If you stay there try the restaurant La Finca de Susanah just around the corner to the right of the hotel. Does not open until 8-30 in evening but excellent food at a very reasonable price. I should imagine it is noisy in summer if you have windows open but if you want a budget hotel in the centre of Madrid you cannot go wrong here

The hotel is very basic but the location is brilliant, it is located very near the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor which seems to be the main part of Madrid and everywhere seems to lead off from the Plaza Mayor. Breakfast was very basic but ok, a bread roll with jam and butter, a plate of meat and cakes but they also did a reasonably priced lunch and dinner menu. Across the road there are bars and restaurants, one restaurant in particular the cafe del Principe is really friendly and serves really nice food.

The Asturias, Madrid
02 December 2006
Perfectly situated smack bang in the centre of Madrid. 2 changes in the Metro direct from the airport where you can buy a metrobono for just over 6 euros at the tabacco kiosk before your trip. Each bono gives 10 trips in the Metro, well worth buying. Less than 30 seconds walk out of Sevilla metro station lies the hotel. It is a beautiful grand old building 5 minutes walk from the Prado, 8 to the Riena Sofia, a minute from the Puerto del Sol and another from the Plaza Mayor. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the receptionist,a Real Madrdid season ticket holder even helped us out with a Real Madrid game. Rooms are large, comfy beds and a security box for a euro. Beware though every time you reopen it, it costs another euro. Well heated rooms, we were there in November, and a balcony and en suite shower and bath. Very clean hotel and a hearty breakfast up until 11.30. No mini bar but there are no shortage of bars in the area as well as a wee tapas bar next to the reception only open in the evening. I'm not sure if the hotel has air conditioning, best check out the site if you are going in the summer, it reaches 40 degrees in the summer in Madrid. For the price in comparison to others this must be the tops, highly recommend the Asturias, at least in the winter.

Hotel was easy to find (approx. 50m from Sevilla metro station) and situated very centrally making sightseeing really easy either by foot or underground. The hotel itself was a bit dated and could do with freshening up, but as it is only 2 star you don't expect the Ritz! The room we were in were large and the fridge came in very handy. The hotel staff were courteous and the breakfast room was quite large and airy. Breakfast was served from 7 - 11am so no rush in the mornings which is always good on holiday, although having the same breakfast evey morning did start to wear a bit thin after a few days! Overall we really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was good value for money and I would certainly recommend it.

Firstly the hotel is very central for Gran Via, transport routes and all the main attractions of Madrid. On arrival the reception staff were not very Welcoming, and the corridors of the hotel could certainly do with a lick of paint, however putting that aside, the rooms were large, very well appointed and decor was good. Breakfast was sufficient to set you up for the morning if you are going sightseeing or hitting the shops on Gran Via. The bar in the hotel seemed to close really early. On entering and leaving the hotel, reception staff did not pay too much attention, and throughout the stay were not the friendliest. Overall a good place to stay, with some very good restaurants nearby. Try El Catedral just around the corner (towards Puerto del Sol) a good choice of menu of the day for about 13€ per person exc drinks.

Review of 'ASTURIAS'
24 October 2006
The hotel occupies a striking corner pitch right in the centre of Madrid - 1 min - Metro (Seville Station), 5 mins Plaza Major, 10 mins Prado or Gran Via the location is superb. Taxi from Main railway station = 10 Euros – Airport = 20 Euros. Excellent shopping and restaurants within a short walking distance. The original grand building is now a shadow of its former self. Decorated throughout with woodchip and magnolia. Dingy corridors and public areas. One temperamental lift. My large room on the 4th floor was VERY basic – scratched furniture, nylon pillows/sheets, faded counterpane, lumpy mattress; a 1970’s no remote TV, no hangers, curtains, seating or air conditioning. Strong whiff of air freshener to cover lingering cigarette smoke. The bathroom had been upgraded some time ago but water pressure/heat was barely adequate. Towels had seen better days! Very noisy 24/7 looking onto the C.Seville with a constant flow of traffic. The personal security instructions for guest safety quite intimidating!
The continental style breakfast in the 1st floor dining room was more than adequate. Additional bread/coffee was available on request from the extremely friendly and efficient waiting staff.
Despite the poor standard of maintenance and decoration, the hotel was very popular and at the time of my stay must have had 100’s of guests. No doubt – like me attracted by the cheap room rates! Oh and the Location, Location, Location!!

20 October 2006
The hotel is old and a bit run-down, don't go here if you're looking for luxury, but our room was clean and quite spacious and as we were on the sixth floor there wasn't too much noise from the road outside and as a bonus we had a nice balcony with panoramic views of the city. Our only quibble was the shower, which was little more than a dribble and not very warm unless you got up early! The hotel is extremely well placed, being a very short stroll from both Sol & Sevilla Metros, surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants and within easy walking distance of some of the major tourist attractions such as the Plaza Mayor. Breakfast was from 7 - 11am, so no need to hurry out of bed (although it couldn't be described as sumptuous, and you might prefer to go to one of the nearby cafes/patisseries for breakfast instead). All in all we found the Asturias excellent value for money and will definitely use it again in future.

Review of 'ASTURIAS' Madrid Spain
19 October 2006
A one night stay at the Asturias was ideal for me, I wanted somewhere cheap, clean and reasonably comfortable and I got it. Being advertised as a two star hotel you can't expect five star luxury.I use a hotel to sleep in and have breakfast in, the rest of the time Iam out sightseeing or whatever. The night I spent there it was pouring with rain and so I decided to stay in and eat there. So glad I did, three course meal with an alcoholic drink thrown in for 19euros was excellent value, and it was lovely, can't praise it enough and very well served. Faults? No notification of meal times or bar times in room, but that was only a tiny irritation. I would certainly stay there again.

Very good location, close to bars, shops, restaurants and discotheques 40 euros in taxi from airport as there is an airport surcharge, 15 euros back to airport, real madrid stadium a few miles away, well worth the 9 euro entrance fee, fantastic! not to mention the 36 degree heat and the most beautiful women. we were a group of 8 lads on a stag, ages from 23-48. All the rooms except room 422 was fine, we did ask to be moved and the staff were very helpful, thanks alpharooms, well recomended.

Good central position in the historical part of Madrid. Hotel has lots of traffic noise, which is only to be expected. Very clean, lots of hot water, and courtious staff. The hotel could do with a coat of paint, but everything was clean and excellent value for the price. The location is a major plus point with lots of bars and restaurants, as well as the major sights such as the Palace and Plaza Mayor, all withing walking distance.
There was heating but no air conditioning, but this wasn't a problem for us in February! The central location means that there are a lot of passing cars and people which can mean a lot of noise, but this wasn't a problem for us once we'd discovered the shutters!
The staff were friendly and spoke English. They provided a store room to store our luggage on the last day, as our flight wasn't until the evening.
The hotel is reasonably easy to get to from the airport on the Metro, if you want to save money. Although there are two changes (not good though if you have lots of luggage!). Or a taxi will cost about 20 euros. Make sure the taxi driver doesn't over charge you - the tarif will be displayed inside the taxi. For the return journey there is a taxi rank just out side the hotel.
All in all, this a hotel in a excellent location that provides great value for money. The pros of being right in the city centre definitely out weigh the cons (eg the noise) for us. I would recommend this hotel.

Yes there was a lot of noise from the street - great! It meant we were right in the Centre- and I always travel with earplugs. The building opposite was very Gaudesque and the most interesting one I saw during our stay.A nice clean hotel with lots of character and every other floor is non-smoking. Breakfast is huge and should cater to all tastes: cereal, croissant, cake, ham, cheese and as much REAL orange juice and coffee as you can manage. Staff are not gushing/servile (as you interpret it) but efficient and polite. One of the best hotels I've stayed in within this price range - would use again DEFINITELY!

The Asturias is a very old hotel and certainly in desperate need of a facelift. Saying that the bedroom was nice but very basic however bathroom was lovely althougn quite small. The hotel is very central for everything and a short walk from the metro but the noise of car horns at night particularly between 4 and 6 in the morning is horrendous. This was made worse by the fact that the shutters wouldn't work on the window. The restaurant was quite spacious and continental breakfast was very nice. Unfortunatley I had my purse stolen on the visit and I'm afarid the staff were quite unsupportive and were only willing to provide very basic advice but weren't willing to assist with any telephone calls which made trying to sort this out in a city where people speaks little or no English quite difficult. So take ear plugs and watch your belongings!

After reading some of the reviews just before leaving we were dreading it but the hotel isnt really all that bad and we would consider staying there again maybe, after all your on holiday so shouldnt be spending that much time in the hotel. As for the noise you would get that in any hotel in the centre as its a very busy place and well worth visiting. (Ear plugs would of been handy) The rooms were clean and the maids did come every day and breakfast was fine. The hotel could do with a make over but its clean and friendly and did the job.

no air conditioning made it impossible to sleep at night as you couldn't open the balcony doors because of the noise from the street. we were on the 2nd floor and had to buy a fan the next day. found a cafe just around the corner for breakfasts which suited us, so didn't try the hotel restauruant. the staff could have had a smile on their faces and been more friendly. the instructions for use of the room safe could have been more clearly written ie leave the key in the lock for a few seconds before removing it. on the whole the central location was the best feature of this hotel.

Cheap and cheerful is one way of describing this hotel! The staff were welcoming and spoke English (well some of them did!)The rooms were clean, you felt they could do with a bit of TLC but nothing we couldn't cope with. No air condtioning, which can be a little uncomfortable when the temperature reaches 40 degrees C as it did when we were there (July)We did manage to scrounge a fan from the chamber maids but this wasn't offered as standard issue. Madrid is an amazing place to visit but not if you want a quiet holiday, the place never sleeps! You did say there is parking, there is but at 27.60 Euros per day it does tend to make your budget hoilday a little expensive!!! Breakfast was really good, plenty to eat and always served with a smile. This hotel is not for the traveller that likes all the comforts of home, but the view from the balcony and the loud comments of passerbys (at any time of day!) make it an experience to say the least. We had a really good time and would revisit.

Review of 'ASTURIAS'
09 July 2005
The great thing about this hotel is its location. Calle Sevilla is just about as central as you could want. As a base to explore most of what the centre of Madrid has to offer it's perfect. The nearest metro station (Sevilla) is less than 100 meters from the front door, so getting further afield is easy too. For anyone on a budget, this also means you can get to the Airport for 1 Euro (2 changes, takes about 25 minutes).
The hotel itself is old. You can take this one of two ways, obviously. Either old as in 'charming & characterful', or old as in 'peeling paintwork'. I felt somewhere in between. The room was big enough and very clean, but there is a sense that everything has been well used. This didn't bother me, but bear it in mind. The staff were very friendly, and took kindly to my clunky Spanish (though English is spoken too).
It's worth me mentioning now that I stayed here in July. In July, Madrid is hot. The hotel does not have air conditioning in the rooms, and during the evenings it is simply too hot to sleep. The outside temperature at 3.00am was 28 degrees, and that was substantially cooler than the room. Opening the window helps slightly, but the noise from the street is unbelievable.
In summary, go in the winter. And take earplugs.
