Central, clean and friendly
27 September 2008
The Astoria gets a 5 for such a central location and the same for a lovely breakfast in elegant surroundings. The rooms were very good - clean and comfortable however the fact that a double room was simply two single beds pushed together took something away from the stay and only gets a 4. Uncfortunately it was quite noisy as the bins seemed to get emptied each morning at about 4 o'clock - ok, nothing the Hotel could really do about that but it meant for a disturbed night - 3 out o 5.
Finally, yes I would happily stay there again and recommend this Hotel to friends.

Astoria review
10 March 2008
Having read all the reviews before we booked we were not a bit disappointed. We asked for (and got) rooms that didn't face the front and had two adjacent rooms that were very comfortable indeed, with chairs to relax in as well as chairs at the desks. The breakfast was great, plenty of choice of hot and cold food and endless juice, tea and coffee. We also ate in the hotel a couple of evenings and thoroughly enjoyed well cooked, beautifully presented dishes. The menus at 4000 frts were particularly good value. Its location is excellent, right by the metro and a brisk 5 minute walk to the Danube. The staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant and we all agreed we would definitely stay again.

Excellent location next to a Metro Station and bus routes. Glorious public rooms in this historic hotel. Our room, although large and clean was a little worn but at the rate of approx £40 a night for a double room including breakfast, it was great value. There was plenty of choice for the buffet breakfast. The dining room was never crowded and the staff efficient. I would recommend this hotel it was great value for money in a capital city. We picked up a Zona taxi at the airport and booked on the net to be taken back at the end of our visit. Quick and good service. They charge a set rate so you have no fear of being cheated.

Handy location, right on metro, although we ended up walking everywhere quite easily.
We had a room on the side street so not too noisy. Our room was one of the smaller unrefurbished type and pretty worn out, defintiely not 4star but served purpose and was clean. As in many places the 'double' was two beds pushed together (also the plastic backed mattress cover was uncomfortable). After the first night we asked if they had rooms with a proper double bed and was told not on the rate we paid but only in better grade rooms which are 30euro extra. Good variety at breakfast - inlcuding chocolate cake! The man on reception was more efficient than welcoming. Characterful reception and dining areas. All in all, ok if you get a good rate but don't expect 4 star if you get an unrefurbished room. Also if you want a taxi back to the airport, ask them to phone Zona taxis (get a card on the way from the airport to hotel) as they are cheaper than the rate advertised of the firm used by the hotel.

The Astoria was pretty much as expected from the reviews I had read. The renovated part of the hotel is very impressive, but our rooms were in the un-renovated section. The rooms were a little tired looking to say the least, although reasonably large and importantly, they were clean. Make sure you ask for rooms that do not face the street as the bin men are very noisy at 5 am every morning! Breakfast was OK with a decent range on offer. All in all, the location made up for everything, but don't be fooled by the star rating, this is no 4 star hotel.

This was a nice hotel. Not AMAZING! but nice. It had everything you could need, from good rooms, nice bathrooms, a cafe and a restaurant(which is expensive and mainly consists of goose liver and caviar!) But that was about it. The staff are reluctant to speak English! But this happens in most of Budapest. Its location is probably it's best quality. Smack bang in the middle of Budapest, meaning you can get to everything, anywhere! You can purchase a Budapest Card from the reception. These are about £20 each and last for 3 days, (you can also buy 2 day passes, im assuming this is about £15. These cards give you free travel on all forms of transport, and discounts into a large number of attractions and restaurants. I would definatly recommend you buy one, whether you're at the Astoria or not! The Zoo is a must see, and is free with your Budapest card. If you're looking for a well priced, nice, centrally located hotel, then the Astoria is perfect.

It was like stepping back in time when entering the Astoria, lots of marble floors and pillars, majestic chandaliers and huge vases. The hotel staff were most welcoming and helpful throughout our stay.
The hotel restauarant was fantastic, again like stepping back in time to the 1920's into a wood and marble dining room. The Hotel is very proud of it's history, presenting hotel artefacts from times gone by in glass cases in the lobby. The breakfast was very enjoyable with lost of variety. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, but not quite what one would hope of a 4 star hotel
Overall lived up to it's rating of a 4 star hotel and a great place to stay to capture that 'old Budapest' feel and access all the wonderful sights Budapest has to offer.

The Astoria is centrally located and just a 10 minute walk from the Elizabeth Bridge and main shopping area. The hotel has recently been refurbished and the friendly staff are extremely helpful and speak good English.
The self-service buffet breakfast offers all you could ask. The egg and bacon disappears quickly however so I recommend that fry up fans move quickly (although supplies are replenished!).
The rooms are comfortable and clean, although rooms overlooking the busy main road may be a bit too loud for some people.
I would recommend the Astoria to anyone looking for a reasonably priced central hotel from which to explore Budapest.

We were greated on arrival by an army of friendly, polite and courteous staff. Who saw that we were shown to our room quickly and efficiently. With plenty of period features, high celings and a balcony, our room was spacious and clean. Athough with its central location and cars and trams wizzing past, we did feel a bit like we were staying in Picadilly Circus! Having arrived late we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant. Great food, in a beautiful setting, with marble pillars, chandeliers and a piano player. Traditional, local cuisine - Roast goose, fresh carp and Hungarian Riesling. A whole new experience and great value at under 50 quid for 3 courses and wine. We found the location of the hotel very easy for getting around, only 5 minutes walk to Elizabeth bridge and the sights of Buda. Being directly above the Metro and tram stops, this was great for getting around. Although the Metro does stop running at 11pm. We found the trendy bars and resturants around the Opera and Oktogon Metro stops great value, offering good menus and cheap cocktails (around 1200 huf). Althrough we missed the last train, the taxi ride back to the Astoria was only about 600 huf. Breakfast is well worth the effort of getting out of bed for! Buffet style, with plenty of bacon, eggs and croisants - perfect for the morning after! Check out was quick and painless, a taxi was ordered for us and we paid at reception a set price to the airport. Budapest is a cosmopolitan city, great for a romantic long weekend. We chose this hotel, by recomendation from a guide book and it certainly lived up to our expectations for the price we paid to stay there. It has a great resturant, centrally located, very good value for money and courteous, English speaking staff. Great for exploring the city.

We are two couples and we stayed 3 days at the Hotel Astoria on January 28th 2006. The hotel was great value for money and made a change from brash modern hotels. Its rooms are full of character and the dining room was lovely with the chandeliers and high cealings. We had newly refurnished rooms on the 4th floor to the side of the building which is the quiet side. The breakfast catered for all types of tastes and could'nt be faulted. The staff were courtious and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days. We would certainly recommend the Hotel to anyone.

When we arrived at the Astoria we were delighted to see a lovely old building that still retained alot of class.
All the staff spoke excellent english, and nothing is too much trouble.
The hotel is being renovated but we stayed in one of the old style rooms that was still lovely, very warm and a small balcony.
Breakfast is a mix of English and continental, lots of cakes and a great selection of tea and coffee.
We will use this hotel again.

Excellant location with clean and tidy rooms. The staff were extremely helpful and spoke perfect English. The breakfast buffet had a great choice of both hot and cold food to set you up for the day. Although the surrounding area had a great choice of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants the metro station outside the front door also provided access to the further afield areas. When returning to Budapest we would certainly have no hesitation staying at the Astoria again.

The hotel is an older style building with some character. Rooms are clean and comfortable if a bit dated and creaky. The hotel is situated on a very busy crossroads and there is quite a lot of traffic noise although the double glazing is really efficient. We found the hotel very warm with no way of regulating heat in the bedroom except for opening the windows. The towels were a bit thin and there was no hair dryer in the room although I was able to borrow one from reception. The staff were helpful. The breakfast was excellent.

Excellent central location - Hotel staff very helpful and hotel was very clean. We stayed in a room that has not been refurbished yet and it looked a little shabby but had all the facilities required. Bar prices too expensive - better using one of the local bars near the hotel.

The hotel was very nice and the staff were accommodating and friendly. Our room was very large which was fabulous as we have a one year old who likes to have a wonder around, which with many hotel rooms, can be very difficult. Rooms were well presented and kept very clean. The hotel is well located on a main street and in walking distance of all attractions.
The menu of the hotel restaurant looked amazing but unfortunetly the food did not live up to our expectations. The food was not hot and the vegetables tasted like they had been cooking all day. There is also a cafe bar where food is less extravagant but we did not eat there. One thing to bear in mind is that all drinks in this hotel stop at 11pm so do not expect those usual late night drinks in the lobby - unless you buy your own of course as we did.
Overall a good base to explore the city but food and drink disappointing.

This hotel is fantastic! We stayed in the re-furbished rooms and cannot pick one fault with them. They had a huge comfortable bed, air conditioning, high ceilings and excellent decor. It is a 4* hotel, but we paid hostel prices! The lobby, dining room and café were magnificently presented. Hotel staff were polite, professional and spoke excellent English. The whole hotel was extremely clean. The breakfast had a large selection of hot and cold food. The hotel is also perfectly located in the centre. When I go back to Budapest I will definitely stay at The Astoria.

This hotel is situated in the centre of Pest, the tram, underground and buses are right there!! The road outside is busy but the double glazing is of good quality.
The lobby, restaurant and public areas are beautiful and are in keeping with the age of the building. The bedrooms are being renovated to a very high standard but not in keeping with the building but you can't have it all I suppose. Friends had a room that had not been done and it was really tatty and very small, ours was larger, had original features and in a lot better condition and I loved it. The hotel did not have a problem upgrading our friends, free of charge, to the 4th floor where all the rooms seem to be completed, it's just floors 1, 2 & 3 that have not been. The staff were wonderful and very friendly. I did not realise Budapest was such a big city but very much worth a visit.

On arrival we were struck by faded elegance in Central Europe worthy of a Cold War thriller. That was soon dispelled however by the most spacious of rooms with all mod cons. Indeed, our travelling companions even had a suite on the same Alpharooms rate! The breakfast and bar atmosphere could do with a little attention - and is the reason I gave 4 rather than 5. That said, the Astoria was a surperb choice for a long weekend in Budapest - next to the metro it is ideally located and, excellent value for money, would get my custom on a return visit.

Stayed at the Astoria for 4 nights. The room allocated was large and well equipped. The room was clean, however the mattresses were extremely hard (like sleeping on a board. ) Bathroom clean, but requiring upgrading. However the foyer, lounges and restaurant/cafe were very impressive. Staff were helpful and breakfast (which was included) was reasonable. The hotel is situated in the centre of Pest and is therefore extremely noisy with heavy traffic passing day and night. The rooms are double glazed and help with noise level, however it was 30 degrees during our stay in September and we could not open the window due to traffic noise - no air conditioning. Metro is on the doorstep, so therefore convenient for travel. Unfortunately due to the high level of traffic and uncomfortable beds, I would not recommend this hotel, however I will definitely return to wonderful Budapest!

We were impressed by the faded elegance of fin de siecle Budapest which pervades the hotel. The room was huge, as was the bed (if a little ungiving) and facilities were more than adequate for a short stay. The whole place was spotless and the staff were helpful although somewnat dour (although having visited the "House of Terror museum" on Andrassy St, I now know why). The Astoria is slap bang next to a Metro stop - you can get to all the main places from there very easily, but get a tourist travel card as they are clamping down on fare-dodgers. The food in the hotel was a good combination of continental with a passing nod to British cuisine in the form of scrambled eggs and bacon (avoid the hard boiled eggs - they are barely cooked). All in all - a good, clean, convenient place for a city break. Late night drinkers beware, the Hotel bar closes at 11:00 and is quite expensive.

Very well located hotel in the heart of the lively Pest. I got a great deal on this place by ebooking via alpharooms. The reception is like something out of the early 1900 - the service however very much of this time. The room was very spacious and clean - with a very large bed and furniture adding to the whole ambiance - the room was very well insulated from the noise from the street.
The bathroom was clean but a bit in need of a refurbishment the toilet flushing broke down but was easy to fix. Cleaning was done very well - the breakfast included was a buffet - all first class. I would like to recommend this hotel to everybody visiting this beautiful town!!

The wonderful 'ASTORIA'
24 March 2005
If you never been to Budapest before and not sure what to expect from your stay you could not go far wrong with the Astoria. Central to all amenities, this wonderful hotel not only feels luxurious, particulary in the cafe and restaurant, but the service is second to none.
The food is fantastic, plentiful and very reasonable. And despite one night in the resaurant being quiet, the piano playing in the corner during our meal was the icing on the cake.
We arrived with a rucksack each but went home with a stool and chair (purchased from a local supplier) perfectly packaged, by the Astoria, to take back on the plane.
