I stayed at this hotel when i was on a school history trip visiting the ghettos and auschwitz and birkeneau (pardon my bad spelling) and i very much enjoyed it. the staff are friendly but i must say the hotel does have a tendancy to fall apart. i broke a window merely by opening it and various other trip members broke doors, drawers, keys and even cutlery!! however i did enjoy the mini-fridge. a very nice, homely feel.

Staff are v. helpful. The hotel is close to the old town which has nice restuarants bars etc. Big drawback is the curtains in the rooms. Like tissue paper. I was awakened at 7am by a bright morning sun. They really are a joke. Overall it was a good hotel, good food, good service but needs a little updating. Would I stay there again. Yes but I would bring something to cover the eyes.

Pleasant Hotel only 5 mins walk to centre. Breakfast was very good, plenty to choose from. Room was clean but basic. Curtains however were'nt up to the job, very thin and would not cover the complete windows. Staff were very friendly and helpful. When we arrived the taxi from the air-port cost 46zlotis, however when we departed we asked the receptionist to order us a taxi, we were surpised to find a limo with a very smart uniformed young man wating for us. That journey cost us 70 zlotis. We were'nt upset however as we had money left over. All in all a very pleasant stay. Food is cheap and the people are pleasant. As two women we did,nt feel in the least threatened. We would certainly return.

The Alexander is a clean basic hotel no more than a 5 minute walk from the main square in Krakow. Staff are English speaking, helpful, cheerful and friendly.

Rooms have adequate space and ensuite facilities for sightseers - ie. overnight usage but lack the comfort and tea/coffee making facilities for daytime use.

The bar/restaurant area is clean and welcoming. Alcoholic drinks were fairly expensive - though non-alcolholic drinks were reasonable. Breakfast was served over a lengthy period and offered a selection of typical continental choices that were changed on a daily basis. The dinner menu offered a limited choice of local and international dishes served to a decent standard.

We made use of taxis booked via the hotel for trips to the Salt mines and to Auschwitz/Birkenau that were reasonably priced with good quality vehicles having plenty of room for 4 passengers. Drivers were pleasant, well-informed, English speaking and they waited for us to complete each tour.

Current taxi rates:

Airport to Alexander Hotel - Zl 60.00 (£15.00)
Hotel to Salt mines - Zl 220.00 (£44.00) approx. 45 mins each way + 2 hour tour.
Hotel to Auschwitz/Birkenau - Zl 400.00 (£80.00) approx. 1 hour each way plus up to 5 hours at sites.

I stayed at the Hotel Alexander in March 2007 for 2 nights whilst in Poland visiting Auschwitz.  The hotel was very comfortable and the location was ideal.  I travelled with a party of mature friends (40+) we found the hotel to be very clean and very good value for money.  The breakfast was very nice offering a selection of meat cheeses cereal breads toast juices etc.  Would definitely use again.
