Review of 'AL MIHRAB'
17 July 2005
This is quite a remarkable hotel! In the heat of early-July, seeing the sights of Cordoba is a bit of an endurance test so it was great to be able to escape to the Al Mihrab when things got too hot.
Set way up on the south-facing hillside overlooking the city and open countryside beyond, the hotel is secluded and quiet, although it's remoteness means you will need a car or rely on taxis to get into the city. That is a straightforward drive though so it isn't a problem.
The hotel is large, but it seemed to have few staff although those were helpful and efficient. Visiting in early July one got the impression that it was not yet ready for the main season; not everything seemed to be fully working and the place was nearly empty for most of our visit. Everything seemed to be geared to higher levels of occupancy than while we were there. However, as our stay passed though more activity developed and so things started to happen.
There is a wonderful pool(with spa-pool)with stunning views from its surrounds and no tiresome rules about when you are and are not able to bathe - pre-breakfast swims in the cool of the morning were blissful. Surrounding lounging areas and gardens provide plenty of sunshine or shade as required, while you are serenaded by the cicadas all around.
Our room was pleasant with efficient air conditioning (essential) and pleasant views of the gardens from the french windows. We reached it through a comfortable lounge (first floor; in addition to those on the ground floor)and past a very attractive internal patio decorated with locally produced, decorated plates.
The stunning thing you notice on arrival (apart from the palms in the entrance courtyard)was the huge conservatory to the rear of the hotel overlooking the pool and open to the views beyond. In the centre is a large water feature (not working!) and numerous vigorous plants (bananas, figs, climbers, palms etc.) As there were so few residents we more or less had the place to ourselves when we breakfasted or dined. (It has to be said that the latter was not a success; much better variety and value to be found in Cordoba) A wonderful place to relax, read, slaughter you partner at backgammon, or just chill out looking at the view.
In summary: I loved this place.
